Back then, the quality was different because the manufacturing was different. I think I read somewhere that they had to change the processes because it caused cancer to the workers. Therefore, they had to change how they manufactured the paper for those Bibles
My favorite bible that I cut my teeth on was a early 90s NIV that was this exact size. Could roll it up and stuff it in my pocket after church. Loved that bible.

I have an ultra thin KJV in bonded black and love love love it. But I am thinking of rebinding it. The cover is getting icky. 😊
