Got myself a 2005 4900ex with a 272 wb that I’m rebuilding right now.
If it turns out this nice, it will be worth all the hard work.
Any updates on the rebuild?
I have been driving for over 20 years and that was always my favorite truck to drive
Nice job looks good ...up north in the logging industry ... Western Star has a model tractor for hauling logs from out of the forest to the mills that has some real heavy duty specs that is one tuff truck for sure.

Every time I see a Detroit Diesel Series 60, I get a smile on my face. This is an engine that you can easily use the word "bulletproof" with, and not be going over the top. It is a great, reliable engine. Always has been.
I am so happy to see more people who also love the 60 series

forgot to mention those red n blue curly q air lines cheapen the appearance of any rig and they are troublesome in cold weather also on the inside tour that striped matress is about as cheap and flimsy as you can get they should have put the V.I.P. bedding option package included in this high end tractor

this is a very pretty truck.
I am really fascinated about this Glider Kit system to mount an Pre-Emission engine in a brand new truck.
Coming from Europe, I only wonder whether there aren't any problems to register a brand new truck with an "emission outdated" engine?
In Europe this wouldn't be possible because new trucks have to comply with the current emission class (currently Euro 6).
Besides it wouldn't be interesting for companies concerning the costs because trucks have to pay money for every driven mile on highways and some freeways in Europe and this money depends very much on your emission class.
I would be really happy if someone could explain me the boundary conditions in North America concerning this topic.
The old engine is remaned, so it isn't the same as producing a new engine without the current emmision standards. It's seen the same as an old truck with an old engine in it. Although, the government has recently limited how many of these rigs can be produced.
I'm gonna have to come see you when holidays are over cause that's what I'm looking for .

I love this tractor I dream about it I don't see any problems except two minor details why are the air breathers so whimpy if western star could not correct this fallacy I would stop by pete or Kenny and have some real breathers put on with some authority and presence and the Detroit is so so ok but I prefer caterpillar

Dang EPA craps on everything. Went way overboard this time IMO. Yes I'm a fan of DD-60 Series. I was at Penske racing on a business trip and there were these 2 mysterious tan diesels in the corner. Who knew? EPA is really a 4 letter word IMO.
Can you get one with DT12?
Looks like the frame is too short to install an APU unit on the frame. You need a APU unit if you can't plug into shore power if you want to save money.

also a bulk heater is better
Since that has a Detroit, you won't need a APU, have them install the Optimized Idle control... Does the same thing...

I drove a 96 Pete 379, had a 60s Detroit 500 hp. it had a control panel, on the sleeper, where you could set the temp on the A/C or Heat, or in cold weather you could set it up , to keep the engine oil at 100 degrees, by firing up engine up, and raise the idle up, to 1000 rpm, and run til the temps got to within 5 degrees, and the truck would drop the engine idle down, and shut down the engine on its own.... All you needed to do, to activate it, the truck needs to be parked, brakes set, cruise on, and transmission, range selector in high range, and turn on the Optimized switch on the dash, and have both front and rear Havoc blowers set on high, the truck engine, would take over, and start and stop, at desired temp, and a alarm on the dash, would let you know, when the engine was going to start up... and you can do it from the control panel in the bunk... It scared me the 1st time I used it, but I got used to it... Its the same setup as an APU, but it uses the truck engine, instead... But I do not know if you can still get it from Detroit or not, in the 90's it cost around $800, to install the controls and wiring harness... my Pete had it factory installed...

What is so heart breaking is that somebody rigged those horrible fender mirrors out there on the hood and fender, looks so horrible and is totally useless
The Freightshaker XL Classic and the Western Star 4900/5900 series trucks were my favorite trucks to change the oil on and it didn't matter if it had a 3406/C15 Cat, Series 60 Detroit, or a N14 or ISX Cummins in it. Everything was spaced out and easy to access.
FreightBlowers don't even compare to Wester Star! That's like comparing a chevy to a Mazerati.

Question to Western Star guys - asking cuz I don't know...the engine seems to really be knockin loud is that normal for detroit diesels? Are Detroits good engines? Thanks
