    Wonderful!!! I totally agree that it's always been a bit involved and I end up making WAY more backgrounds than I can use because I want it to be worthwhile considering the effort it took. Not to mention having to put away all the supplies afterward. 😒 Being able to make a few backgrounds with minimal supplies and less time is FANTASTIC! I love your sense of adventure and experimentation in crafting! 👍💖😊

    I just bought my first Gelli plate after seeing one of your other videos! This is great. I didn’t remember that it takes acrylic paint and had a disaster trying watercolors on it yesterday. I was convinced this medium was not for me. But then I remembered that I had bought my grandgirls a set of cheap acrylic paints... then you showing different ways to add color if you don’t have acrylics has made me give it another go! Now i need those stencils 😄

    What works if you don’t have a gel plate: a Teflon craft sheet/baking sheet on top of something soft like a carpet tile or some scrap cloth and then put something firm underneath that. Doesn’t give precisely the same effect but you CAN do most of the gel printing techniques and most ppl have those supplies to hand.

      Hey spin doc - please forgive my silly question- just want to make sure I’m understanding what ur saying because for years I’ve wanted to get gelli print plate but unsure if I’d enjoy using it...so are you saying we can put paint and stuff on the baking sheet, put the paper down on it...put pressure on to transfer image from sheet to paper? Then just wipe clean the baking sheet? This is awesome if that’s what ur saying I can do to test it out. Again I apologize for being naive. Thank you, thank you. Can’t wait to give it a whirl.

    • @halomom1

      @@jeaninehinckel77 Yes, I believe so. But the baking sheet is a non-stick silicone liner like you would put put down on your cookie sheet to bake something sticky. You can buy them at Walmart or the dollar store. Or if you already have a silicone craft mat, that works great! I would put something with a bit of cushion under the silicone mat, like a thin piece of fun foam or a piece of thin styrofoam. Have fun!

    • @brrjohnson8131
      @brrjohnson8131 3 роки тому +1

      I know the first comment said Teflon but I think the silicone baking sheets mimics the gel plate texture & holds the medium from pooling like the Teflon does. Heidi Swapp made a big greenish silicone craft matt a few years ago. Imo, Lisa ^ is on track.
      I have my Ranger Teflon matt over a silicone baking sheet, I keep on a giant clipboard. Most used tool.

    • @TheSpinDoctor
      @TheSpinDoctor 3 роки тому

      @@jeaninehinckel77 Sorry I didn’t see your question to reply sorry!!! And yes that is - but you need something under it with a bit of “give” - funfoam probably works, I’ve used carpet. That gives your “plate” enough “push back”. You need to weight down the baking sheet (this is as in a silicone baking sheet you put on an oven tray normally and wipe and re-use or a Teflon Ranger craft sheet, not just baking parchment/paper/that is disposable - maybe an Atlantic Ocean division on the language sorry!) at the corners to keep it still. I used to do “micromonoprints” on spare old business cards on Instagram when cleaning my Ranger craft sheet which is how I found out it worked. You can also make your own gel plate btw - Mrs Weirich has a great method in a video. But at £10 for a small gel plate I’d just get one and see!

    I've spent the last 9 months playing with sharpie markers and 93% alcohol. I mark on some hard plastic (I don't have a gel plate), use a fine dropper to add alcohol, then lay a small card down on it. I've been using recycled business cards. How you add the alcohol, how much you use, how you pick it up on the card, and how you mix the colors all affect the results. It is addicting! But I think my next purchase might be a gel plate. You all are having too much fun with these things to resist much longer! Thanks for the demonstration and recommendations.

    I needed this. My new love are stencils. I find the way I work making a card with a stencil is quicker than stamping and coloring the image. Then combining the stencil with alcohol markers and the rest was fabulous. Unique cards are so interesting and beautiful. The only problem I now have is I don’t own a gel plate or a brayer! My Dollar Tree didn’t have those metal right angle things. I was disappointed, but what perked me up was I found small makeup blending brushes which are great for ink blending on stencils.

    Amazing video. I made my own gelli plate using the recipe from an old video of yours. I don't have acrylic paint or gouache but I have dye ink pads and have seen other crafters use them on the name brand plate. I tried it on my homemade plate but it just stained the plate and did not transfer any ink to paper. Could that be coz I did not make the plate properly or do homemade ones not work with inks in general? Thanks for sharing so many tips with us.

    I use air brush medium and any gel medium I grab. They both work a treat. When it comes to stuff that beads up on the plate I put a bit of air brush medium down and just drop acrylic ink or whatever watery thing I'm using into that and spread it out with a roller. I've used the gel mediums to pull PanPastels up off the plate too. Takes a few goes sometimes, but it's fab. It's how I made my PanPastel swatch sheet.

    Two questions. 1. Would acrylic medium work as a way to make your gauche stick? 2. Can i use a gel plate process to print onto printmaking paper? I used to do a lot of etchings but no longer have access to a press. I have lots of top quality printmaking paper. I also have etchi ng inks bu they would probably destroy the gel plate. I don't have a gel plate but am wondering if I could use one.

    We learned so MANY different tips (at least 9) from just this one video!
    1) store stencils in envelope. 2) Use makeup palettes. 3) use 1 mod podge vs MANY acrylic paint tubes or jars. 4) store Mod podge in glass jar. 5) use pouring paint - white. 6) layer metallics first. 7) use plastic palette knife on DIY plates. 8) use alcohol markers + spray iso. alcohol. 9) use Dollar Tree corner square as card jig. 10) use jelly gouache, + more!
    Question 1: Can I use water spray to mix the alcohol markers on plate? I gave away all my alcohol ink bottles and spray because the fumes made me nauseous even with fans blowing (I have closed windows in Chicago winters).
    Question 2: If I can't use spray water to mix, instead of alcohol markers, could I do that same 1st layer technique using water-based markers or crayons (like crayola, ranger, sakura, etc.)
    Many thanks, Lindsay. I've been a subscriber for years. Your videos are straight to the point and informative with great commentary!

    Doesn’t the alcohol break down the gelli plate?

    Really cool demo. Lindsay you are the only one I have watched using Gel plates that has said let it dry between layers and your layers come out so much more distinct. I wonder why no one else I've watched does that?

    I am clearly blown away. What great ideas! I was thinking about gel printing yesterday. Do you have any ideas for a substitute gel plate? I wanted to start making backgrounds for cards and I have been using a silicon mat over an old towel. I can't afford a real gel plate at the moment. I am trying to expand my horizons beyond digital art during this trying time. Thank you for any suggestions.

      I have a couple of recipes on my channel to make a gelatin plate but a sheet of smooth Styrofoam works great too! Save meat or veggie trays!

      @@thefrugalcrafter Thank you, ma'am. Going to have a boo at your channel. Hey, we are having Chinese dumplings tonight that come on a styrofoam tray! Dinner and a craft idea. Again, thanks for taking the time to answer.

    Why did you have to spray alcohol? Great video. Thanks for the stencil info. Great deal on those. Clicked on ur link to those and purchased.

      The alcohol is probably to activate the ink and make it liquid enough to pick up as a print.

    Does it matter what kind of paper we use for gel printing? I don't have a gel press yet, but I have something similar. It is a block of photopolymer that is supposed to be used for mirrored stamping. I'm going to try it! 😁💜

      That should work. Any smooth paper us great! You can even use smooth paper you don't like or the back of old scrapbook paper
