That is due to our shared history of slavery and indentured servitude. Our native language is called creolese and uses English as the base. We do use a few Dutch words also. The first people in Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados all came from the Northern south America. They were the Taino's the awawaks, and the Caribs. These tribes originated from south America some stayed on the mainland others went out on the coast to form the other countries. We are one people.
Mauby is made from the tree bark, like root beer. The pepper pot usually is enjoyed with bread, but some ppl like it with a little rice, however ,however you should try the chicken curry with rice and also the cook up rice with baked chicken or fried fish and some pepper sauce on the side

Sly, next time youre in Georgetown, ask a street vendor where to find fudge. Its absolutely delicious. It can be made with raisins and/or fruit. Fudge is a soft white sweet snack that they make in Guyana.

If you could ,you should visit juice power they sell fresh fruit juices (cherry juice is great) plus other Guyanese dishes and snacks( puri,boiled channa with lovely chutney sauce/sour (we called it) etc. Enjoy your stay.
