If you use the "hot" mud that dries in one hour, or the 15 minute stuff, you can slam on 3 or 5 coats in an afternoon and get the heck out of there sooner...mix the stuff in throwaway aluminium cooking pans, as it dries and hardens quick.
Then dont sand at all, just scrape it down smooth with 6" knife.
Put worklight next to wall pointed sideways, this will catch all the ridges and globs and whoops you can see them stick out obvious from the shadows cast...
This for "smooth walls"
Use "finish" mud last fine coats and touch ups it's very fine mud goes on super nice and invisible after primer.

When I use canned texture, I usually use a piece of cardboard and play with the settings until I have the spray pattern I want. You get about the same absorption on cardboard as dry mud, and I've found I save enough time overall to make it worth it on each project. I do the same for practice/matching on other texture, whether knock-down or whatever crazy pattern was originally used. I could probably just dive in, but I recommend this kind of testing for beginners to see how it behaves.
I do the same thing.
Simple, but takes a long time. I always tell residents that the patch can take days. I use the can a lot. Works really well. They can't tell there was ever a hole there, even with big patches like the ones I make when replacing a shower valve assembly. In winter if the can is really cold and you cannot get a spray pattern. Soak it in hot water.

The smooth look cost 5 times more than texture. Smooth walls are called level 5 finish.
I’m so glad to see that someone else caulks corners too. I’ve been judged so hard for that. I don’t always do it. Just in hard to reach spots or if I don’t want to do it
Its ok to do it. A lot of guys that are in business do it this way. The only people who judge you for it have no sense of business.
I’ve never heard of chalking the corner until this video. Is there really any disadvantage of chalking it in situations like this? This is surely something I’m going to keep in my back pocket.

A dullish, pull paint scraper does a great job of removing excess plaster. Works well on those corner bead humps and those taping pull off ridges.

I always find it strange when watching “muddying” in the UK we tend to plaster the full wall instead of using a smartmix (joint and filling compound) it nice to see the different ways people do this around the wall.
East coast here. We don’t texture. Looks good though.
Felonious Fishing I do about 3-4 coats with sanding in between and feather out as much as possible.

That's stuff is premixed you just want it wetter. The powdered dry wall mud is not premixed it comes in a bag. I wet the dry wall mud tape with water first and after applying dry wall mud around the surface that the dry wall tape is going against. Then I put the soaked dry wall mud tape and more dry wall mud.
Hey Handyman, why not use hot mud 20min or 45 min and just get this done in a day ? Thats what I typically do, tape, mud, texture in one day. any reason for you using all purpose and returning to job site multiple times? thanks, great vid.
I hate using hot mud for anything outside small patches. It's a pain in the ass to sand smooth.

Got a question for ya: for paint matching, do you take a piece of old drywall, wall, etc....to paint shop & have them match it, or do you use app, paint wheel, swatches, etc? Just curious for your method & what you like best.

I have tried to have paint matched many times. I have only had one time that it was an exact match. I will have to primer and paint that entire blue wall. The stair wall will get primed and painted too. Anything that is flat they can try to get a paint match with. Door trim, siding, piece of wall.

I think I only did that in one video. If you are going to prewet, It should be with thinned down joint compound.
I've seen a lot of people back butter the tape before they apply it, any real advantages or disadvantages of that compared to what was shown here or is it primarily preference?
I haven't heard it called back buttering the tape. On larger jobs I use my banjo amzn.to/3jvlbaX that tool puts mud on both sides. You can pre soak the tape in thin mud to make it easier to work with. As long as it's soaked in its good to go.

Whats better and or easier to use, paper or mesh?
Paper can be a little messier but creates much less of a hump to float out.
So at the beginning of the video you say to spread the up of the joint over a distance. Won't that show with the light on it? Why not try to even it out up to the joint?
Every drywall joint in your house is done this way. The tape and mud make a high point. That high point is feathered out over a distance so that you can't see it anymore. Butt joints are feather out further than the sloped joints to hide the joint.

Thanks for the videos! Why do some people say to soak the tape and some people don't? What's the difference?
If you soak the tap it makes it easier to bed the tape into the mud. It is not a strong bond though. You can pre wet the tape with thinned down joint compound but don't use water. It will be a weak joint. You need the tape saturated with the compound.

Handyman, are you wetting the tape first, or are you letting the thin mud get in?
You aren't supposed to pre wet the tape. You want the wet mud to penetrate the tape. I have tried the pre wetting before. It makes it easy but makes a weak joint too.

Hi Mr Handyman, just wanting to find out do you use a stud finder when drilling holes in the wall, is it something a handyman should invest in ?
The Franklin Sensors one at Harbor Freight is an excellent stud finder at a good price. Around $25 before coupons, discounts, etc. I think the model is TS700. Yes, you should have one. Anyone who has walls & things to hang on them should use a stud finder.

Why not use hot mud?
Not practical for this type of install. It is impossible to sand and getting a good mixture for smooth floating isn't possible.
