Such beautiful history and people thank you. Your prodigal son the USA love you. IS THAT PHILS HAT on the wicker man??
I wonder how effective the wicker man would really have been as a means of human sacrifice? People always go on about it with reference to the Druids and I feel it needs contextualising. The accusation was made by a culture that routinely fed people to the lions for sport and loved accusing others of human sacrifice, being about the only grizzly barbaric practice the Romans didn't indulge in. The evidence for it in Britain is basically Lindow Man (correct me if I'm wrong) - while we can say he was probably ritually executed, archaeology doesn't tell us for what reason and by whom. Miranda Green points out the similarities with Danish bog deaths, it's a long way to go just to get rid of a cauldron.
Silly. The Druid's told by an Englishman. Lol. They were never cannibals. Seriously the English were more cannibals than The Druids. That's like saying the priests of their time were cannibals. Lol Do people actually believe anything on the internet it's such BS filled with sensationalism and misinformation to suit a narrative.
@@myhounddog This one pre-dates the internet by a fairly long chalk. Miranda Green was an improvement on Stuart Piggott's take on the subject. But ultimately the idea that the Celtic Britons practised cannibalism goes back to Caesar - he was basically trying to get the Senate's support to invade Britain. Everyone else was basically what Caesar said
@Chris Wings It you mean "plebeians". I think people like Caesar were actually trying to influence the Senate, in order to gain funding for their campaigns, but yes, and propaganda is still used this way
I really wonder if it was physically possible to burn one or more human bodies in this wickerman. You need quite a substantial amount of wood for a funeral pyre, nothing I can notice here. And... Well, IF they were cannibals, why waste a perfectly fine meal?

@@stevenhale2935 Putting an end to a conflict that really has no resolution isn't "backing down." Backing down is when someone says, "Okay, I see your point. I was wrong." Smiling politely and turning your attention elsewhere is simply a refusal to engage. I mean, I agree with you wholeheartedly. De la Bedoyere would absolutely not back down. He's far too passionate a Romanist to knuckle under. If Francis Pryor and he were sitting next to each other in the inevitable pub and Pryor started to revive a set-to they'd had in the field, I suspect de la Bedoyere would say something to the effect of, "Let's save that for later, shall we? What are you having? Oh, did you see that lovely little Tudor manor house and church down the road?" That's not backing down. That's tact.

I find it so tragic to know just how much the Romans destroyed. I would love to know the names of local deities they worshipped or the names of towns etc but all that was erased forever!! Shameful what they did to the Druids and Celts!! They were just horrific monsters and bullies. Shame on them for murdering innocent people by the millions and erasing thousands of years of history and culture!!!

every time i watch time team i'm reminded of 2 of Eddie Izzard's skits, i can hear her saying "... ah yes, a series of small walls..." and "I come from Europe, where the history comes from! You tear your history down, man"
Haven't thought of him in years 😂
Wow, this was such an awesome episode of Time Team! Very exciting. Well done to everyone who made this amazing program perfect 👏👏👏
Is there anything more adorable than Helen Geake in a bucket hat?
With or without her hat, I have a secret crush on Helen who is very cute, with her rosey red cheeks, humour, and great personality.
She's a trifle more refined and clever than most!
Love the show, thank you. I love how phil can see such small, stone looking pieces of pottery at 30 feet away as the machine exposes the earth for the first time in a long, long, time. Such beautiful history and people thank you. Your prodigal son the USA love you. IS THAT PHILS HAT on the wicker man??
Mick gets more excited over bricks than Gold hoardes,Roman relics,Viking shields & boats😂
I was 34 before I realized my name was an anagram for DRUID! This one's for me!
Yay Carlos
My favorite programme. rest in peace phil.Your sorely missed.
Lol
Do people actually believe anything on the internet it's such BS filled with sensationalism and misinformation to suit a narrative.
I think people like Caesar were actually trying to influence the Senate, in order to gain funding for their campaigns, but yes, and propaganda is still used this way
"The victors write the history" as Churchill and Franz Fannon said.
I really wonder if it was physically possible to burn one or more human bodies in this wickerman. You need quite a substantial amount of wood for a funeral pyre, nothing I can notice here. And... Well, IF they were cannibals, why waste a perfectly fine meal?
The Wickerman!Phil was a nice touch to this episode.
46:07 the best bit! Wicker Phil!
Yeah the movie was scary as well especially for me as a kid.
Druids? Rituals? Romans? Can't wait for the fight: Francis vs. Guy.
I wonder if any of them, during the pub "talks", Asked if the other gent would like to "step outside" and sort out Druids v's Roman..
Drink + Guy + On a point to make..... That would be a weird one to view from the outside. lol
@@fingersTitan I can definitely imagine Guy whipping out a gladius to resolve a bar fight
@@stevenhale2935 I can't imagine Guy de la Bedoyere in a bar fight, with or without a gladius. I imagine him, after a point, simply turning his attention elsewhere.
@@haplessasshole9615 i think the concept of Guy backing down is far more ludicrous
Oh, did you see that lovely little Tudor manor house and church down the road?"
That's not backing down. That's tact.
This is my dream job, really career. Addicted to history of the British Isles. My family came to what would eventually be the colonies in the 1600's. Amazing that technology now can help see what the land used to look like and find the proof of what has been mear speculation before.
I long to hear.."As usual we just have Two Months to find out" hahahaha!
11:59 Fantastic shot of Stewart walking across the face of a spinning windmill.
‘Windmill’?
Blight on the landscape.
@@lavillablanca I totally agree, but still a cool shot I thought.
LOL Ian is a top operator he identified the change in ground by the change in tone of the engine driving the digger
Said he's passed away with Mick and Victor the Artist..
I love Francis’s laugh when the are zdigging up the cist grace it is so amazing when he gets it going so hard it starts sounding like a Bird call.
Just fascinating. My grandmother's surname is of druid and or pictish origin. It means Of Oak or Dark Oak.
Darroch.
So exciting! You did so much in 4 short weeks. I’m looking forward to hearing about all the finds in the longer version when released. I’m so honored to be a Patreon member. Maybe, if you have member participation again, I will apply to be there. I missed being able to apply this year.
Wonderful episode! ❤️❤️❤️

It would be awesome to see any episodes that were in Lyme Regis
Thanks so much for posting
Phil and John swigging from a bottle of Whiskey at the end there.

Mick was the Best thx Mate👍🇬🇧
Really enjoyed this one. I wish we knew more of our history regarding Druids. So little of them is known because the Romans were so good at destroying its culture. I often imagine in my own mind what it would be like if we could go back in time and visit Rome at the hight if it’s glory and splendour. The Roman period in our history is my favourite period in our history. Fantastic military and civil engineers.
Time Team is one of my top 3 shows of all time
Too bad you can only "like" once...
The sight of Helen, Dani,Brig and Raksha just make me go all mushy inside in the best possible way .....
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
John Gater, Stewart, Jonathan Foyle and Matt for me!
Thanks for sharing, GB :)
2:12 You need as many of this group back as possible for a Time Team Reboot to work... these were always considered the core group. I know people are a lot older, in some cases sadly no longer with us, but every effort surely has to be made to get the group together. Given it's funded from the public, I imagine Tony could be an issue, fee wise, but hopefully he'd want to do it for the love of the game.
While that would bring in old viewers, it would probably kill the show. You have to bring in new people if you want it to last.
Well 3 of them are dead so I doubt your going to get them together again
VICTOR the ARTIST. RIP
IAN the DIGGER...RIP
MICK the STRIPEY JUMPER CHAP.. RIP
“We aren’t going to stuff it with human beings?” “I’m kinda disappointed really” LOL
@8:52 could they be "torcs" that the druidic elect wore during ceremonies?
Thanks again can Hardly wait!!
When l go to heaven,it's going to be a perpetual time team show.all the usual characters plus me.l love this show and the people.l could happily spend eternity with the team.
With as windy as it is, it's hard to believe anyone would have ever spent any kind of time there.
Another theory is the Druids could have cut out trenches to use as natural, barrier dug-out to help guard against the strong winds.
remember, the landscape was totally different then.

The Builder's Bum of the Day award goes to...
Bridg.
Please don't bring that down shirt and a** ogling crap onto this site. It is demeaning to professional women to be commented on sexually instead of credited on their professionalism and knowledge.
😂😂 Archaeologist's arse is a time old tradition. Bridg is so great
@@billie-jobenway8658
Builder's Bum is not gender specific.
It's certainly not a sexual observation.
Lighten up.
@@lazer2365 You're right and I apologize. I am rather sensitive because there was another person who put up all the Time Team regulars and specials, etc.. That site had attracted the interest of about 15 guys who looked for and marked every instance of down shirt shots of female diggers and also a hardcore interest in every shot of Bridget's butt. It was like a competition to be the first to note and time stamp every shot they could.
They never had a damn thing to say about anything else and were not there for the actual show at all. It was pretty disgusting. Your putting in the time, Bridget, and bum just brought that back and I jumped the gun. My mistake. The site is no longer up and though I miss it I'm glad they no longer have the run of it.
"Dagenham smile" would've been more cheeky.
Francis saves the whole dig!

I note that when Tony was politely reprimanded by the Welsh expert about his perceptions of the Druids his justified (and accurate) riposte “but they (the modern Druids) are just a 18th Century conceit aren’t they” was simply brushed aside with no further (pertinent) explanation!
Tony 1, 18th Century conceits 0. ;)
Agreed. Total emotion with no scientific basis. Always disappointing to see logic over ridden by feelings.
Maybe Tony shouldn't have started his (justified) questions with condescending remarks about "new age hippies in white cloaks".
@@karlkarlos3545 Well lets be honest he wasn’t too far off the mark in many instances was he. ;)
Indeed, well meaning (if sometimes speculatively motivated) reclamation of ancient history reminds us of the summer solstice crowd, attention-seeking occultists and of course former biker John Rothwell (aka Arthur Uther Pendragon) - who reinvented himself as a “Neo-Druid” whilst also claiming to be the reincarnation of _King Arthur_ , no less!
All harmless fun of course but hardly deserving of reverence. ;)
@@makara80 All true, but still reckless of Tony. His flippant remarks could have easily earned him a place inside that Wicker Man at the end.
Yeah, he's so obviously defensive about it, and he tries to discredit all the ancient sources with a really flimsy (and clearly biased) counter argument.
I know the lovely Mike passed away but I’d love to know what the others want on to do after the show ended I loved it so glad to find here
And Ian the digger & Victor the Artist have passed as well..RIP
I love this show!

Sad he's passed away with the artist Victor..
Keep the classic episodes coming to the uk as I look forward to them
I find it so tragic to know just how much the Romans destroyed. I visit southern France often in Languedoc and it's so hard to find historical references for anything before the gruesome Romanization of the region when the Celts reigned supreme.
Well said, these are on the payroll, the beginning bouldrick said "druids were cannibals and sacrificed" that was ceasers account and he was Roman 🧐😊
Remember the celt Brennus sacking Rome in 390 BC and Greece . Vae Victis. They started the shit with the romans. I thanks the romans for civilisation, they are the craddle of our people with Greece. The rest is insignificant.
@@markmacthree3168 :-(
Yes, but aside from that, what did the Romans ever do to you?
@@swissmilitischristilxxii3691 Nobody needs to thank the romans for civilization. The Germans taught them a permanent lesson (Varian Disaster), and they never had a chance at Germany. And Germans now aren't any less advanced than romanized countries.
