From Modding Unreal Tournament, To Rapid Prototyping | The Making of Rimworld

  • Rimworld has a pretty unique story that almost didn't happen if it weren't for a bug that creator, Tynan Sylvester failed at fixing with one of his many prototypes. At the time, Tynan, an author and a previous industry level designer working on Bioshock Infinite, had recently decided to work for himself as an indie developer.
He had his roots tinkering in the Unreal Tournament modding scene, winning many prizes and even getting recognition from Cliff Bleszinski. Tynan got his main inspiration for Rimworld from reading stories about the game, Dwarf Fortress from players in the community. The game itself didn't exactly gel with Tynan, but he was inspired to create a game that would garner the same kind of attention and have players telling their own stories for years to come.
Tynan and his team at Ludeon Studios would release their highly successful title in 2013 and till this day, the game continues to amaze players new and old and has produced not only countless stories, but also countless mods from people just like him in his early modding days.

Excellent video! You really did your research and it shows! I interviewed him on a podcast I used to do and I really think I missed the opportunity to ask better/more interesting questions regarding his prior experiences before Rimworld.

This was a great story to listen to, thank you! So Sylvester did all this without formal training in game design? Also I'm interested in hearing about the controversy at the end, I was wondering if you would link the article written and/or the reddit post clearing his name? Thanks again for the video!

So Tynan did Attend Concordia Univ for computer science but in terms of game design, from all that I've found, he is entirely self taught through experimenting and being heavily involved in the modding and level designing community.
I do have the links to all articles, including the controversy in the bottom of the description. Let me know if there is something wrong with the link or format and I'd be happy to change it.
Thanks sooo much for watching and I'm incredibly happy that you enjoyed it. Looking to get the next video out by the weekend.
