I know this sounds stupid, but I feel some sympathy and even empathy for AI, people don't think of the Mario AI as a person, but I think there is a small bud of sentience in that AI.

In this case, at least, we do know that the machine learning models don't recognize patterns in the (exact) same way we do. For instance, you can't have a conversation with one of these models and start teaching it a new language (that it hasn't been trained on). That's simply beyond its capabilities. But a limit of the machine's capabilities doesn't make it unthinking, just like my own ignorance of quantum physics doesn't make me unthinking. As much as hubris wants me to pretend like I'm special, in the end, what can I really say that will prove I'm human? And what use would that be, anyways?
