You know, that's exactly correct. I had occasion to speak to both Elvis's keyboard player, and his long time touring 'co-star' Brenda Lee. Both confirmed that not only did he say this to the interviewer, he meant every single word of it. Not many could humble Elvis, as in- NO ONE ELSE :) Close your eyes and just listen to Roy's songs, it simply blows you away.
From Wikipedia: "Orbison's backing band was the TCB Band, which accompanied Elvis Presley from 1969 until his death in 1977: Glen Hardin on piano, James Burton on lead guitar, Jerry Scheff on bass, and Ronnie Tutt on drums. Male background vocalists, some of whom also joined in on guitar and keyboards, included Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and Steven Soles. The female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt."
That guitarist was James Burton, who used to be part of elvis's band, and originally part of Ricky Nelson's band on the Ozzie and Harriet's show. James is one of the all time best.
Roy was Elvis's favourite singer. They were friends back in the 50s. Elvis called Roy 'the greatest singer in the world', and Roy called Elvis the 'firstest and the mostest'. Roy was in a Country and Western band when he first heard Elvis' That's Alright Mama and it turned him on to rockabilly and rock n roll. This song was his first hit.
The show had an all star band. Orbison's backing band was the TCB Band, which accompanied Elvis Presley from 1969 until his death in 1977: Glen Hardin on piano, James Burton on lead guitar, Jerry Scheff on bass, and Ronnie Tutt on drums. Male background vocalists, some of whom also joined in on guitar and keyboards, included Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, JD Souther and Steven Soles. The female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt. During the end credits, several of the band members are shown talking about how Orbison influenced them. Several other celebrity admirers of Orbison were in the audience, including David Lynch, Billy Idol, Patrick Swayze, Billy Bob Thornton, Sandra Bernhard and Kris Kristofferson.
Roy was asked to do a duet on his song Crying for the soundtrack of the film Hiding Out, he was having trouble with it & was sent a tape of k.d.lang then it all fell into place you should check out their duet of the song & also k.d’s version from his tribute show she was asked to sing it by his family she is a powerhouse of a singer ❤❤
That guy in the white shirt soloing? That's guitar great James Burton, who played with everybody from Elvis to John Denver. Member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
When Elvis Presley signed with RCA Records in 1956, Roy Orbison (with The Teen Kings) signed with Sun Records, and “Ooby Dooby” was his first record for the label. Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley, however, were often performing in concert together in their early years.
Great early Roy Orbison song from back when he wasn't wearing shades!!! The song "Runnng Scared" from 1961 is stoic and awesome! And you'll shed a tear over the songs "It's Over" and "Crying". That voice man! 😊
The solo with guy in white jacket is James Burton. Lead guitarist for Elvis In fact drummer is Elvis drummer too. Bruce Springsteen, jd Souther, Jackson Browne , kd lang. etccc black/white concert was sooo much fun. Organized byTBone Burnett
His backup singers were Jennifer Warnes, k d lang and Bonnie Rait. Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, JD Souther, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, and Steven Soles added to the mix.
Elvis was first. Roy Orbison followed him to Sun Records in Memphis, along with Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and probably several others. One who arrived in Memphis not long after Elvis left Sun Records for RCA was Charlie Rich Who was signed as a singer, songwriter and piano player. Sam Phillips once stated that the only other artist who could have done what Elvis did, start the craze for rock and roll was Charlie Rich. Charlie wrote and sang Lonely Weekends, Who Will the Next Fool Be, Midnite Blues, Don't Put No Headstone on My Grave, and many other great songs.
Got Springsteen, Tom Waits, and T Bone Burnett going on there with some Jordanaires. The whole night was star-studded, but everyone kind of hung back and were part of the band. Others included in the night were Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes and others.
Orbison's catalogue is huge. Elvis is also huge, but nobody sounds like Orbison or has the same range. The whole Black and White Concert, recorded later in Orbison's career, deserves a complete listen. That's Tom Waits on the keyboards. Most of these UA-cam titles are only click bait.
Orbison died of a heart attack in December 1988 at age 52, a month before the release of his song "You Got It." It was his first hit to reach the US & UK Top 10 in nearly 25 years. You should hear it. 😊
That's Bruce Springsteen next to him on guitar! Roy, Elvis, and Johnny Cash all came up through Sun records at roughly the same time so lots of crossover.
I like Roy Orbison, but I was a huge Elvis fan. They both started their career in the 1950s with Rockabilly. Elvis was born in 1935, Roy in 1936. Elvis' oldest known concert footage is from 1955. But he started a little earlier (1954). Back then Elvis was on tour together with Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. Elvis' opinion of Roy Orbison: "Greatest singer in the world".
I can tell you like this beat. When I was young we did a dance called the "shag". This is the rythum and I started "shaggin" in my living room 😂😂😂. You bring back memories to us old farts, you have no idea😆😆😆✌️😎
My husband was from SC and he taught me how to dance the Shag when we were dating. ❤ We danced for 30 years until we got old with different maladies😢 I sure miss those days and him!
You saw Bruce Springsteen there, right? Actually not his regular band, they are famous all in their own right. The guy playing piano, the guy dressed in white, even his back singers, KD Lang etc.
BP: Elvis came first with "That's All Right" in July 1954 on Sun Records. Roy recorded "Ooby Dooby" as a member of The Teen Kings in April 1956 on Je-Wel Records and almost immediately re-recorded in for Sun in May 1956 as Roy Orbison and The Teen Kings. If you like this style of music Memphis's Sun Records in the 1950s is the place for you. Elvis, Roy, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Warren Smith etc. etc. Not to mention the blues artists recorded there.
Took the words right out of my mouth!! He needs to listen to Little Richards "Tutti Frutti" which was recorded 1955 and sounds like "Ooby Dooby" Also "That's All Right" was a cover of Arthur Crudup's single from 1946
Elvis came on so big, that everyone tried to sound like him. There were a million Elvis soundalikes, Terry Stafford, Ral Donner, even early Conway Twitty (legendary country artist) and so many more, many of whom were lesser known. It's the same today. Someone comes out with a sound or style that becomes popular, everyone jumps on the bandwagon. Roy Orbison, though, went on to do his own thing, quite successfully.
I think that was some of Eliv band backing him up with Bruce Springfield playing next to him. He had and allstart female backup singers that night. Please do more from the " Black and White".
You don't have any idea who the other Legends are on the stage with Roy Orbison do you? You were just Boogie and through this like Roy was up there with a backup band. So much more to learn...
This concert is well worth watching in its entirety. I'll bet you'll hear some songs you never knew were his. The line-up of supporting players shows how much Orbison influenced his own generation and the next. BTW - re those "what we always suspected" youtubes - nothing but click bait. Nothing of substance to explore.
This is the man that changed my life.i heard pretty woman when it came out I was about 7 .hooked me on rock and blues for life work and all literally put me on a different path than if I'd never heard it.
Deep dive idea is a very good one as some of them have had a fascinating journey to where they got to .some have twists that would make most give up others just right place right time etc great idea
Elvis never wanted Roy Orbison to be on the same billing as him, he knew how good he was! I got to see him in a high gymnasium in Youngstown ,Ohio with 3 other major bands...thats the kind of concerts that would be around when i was a teen and they were never more than $10....later the groups got bigger more well known and playing large venues ,didnt pay...knew people lol
You've had a reaction to almost all the members of the Traveling Wilburys, a super group from the 80's consisting of Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn, Bob Dylan and George Harrison. You owe it to yourself to check them out.

In my experiences, every title that says, So and So has just told us what we've expected all along. Or Just Leaked. It seems that it is usually "Click Bait".
Someone asked Elvis how did it feel to be the greatest singer ever and his answer was " I don't know , you would need to ask Roy Orbison"
Someone once asked me what’s it like to be the greatest UA-cam commenter, and I said I don’t know ask Joyce.

Yes he died when I was 3 mnts old
Lots of "well known" in the audience also.
That guitarist was James Burton, who used to be part of elvis's band, and originally part of Ricky Nelson's band on the Ozzie and Harriet's show. James is one of the all time best.
This is rockabilly, a mix of rock, blues, country, and others.
One of the best concerts ever filmed. Probably the most expensive back up group ever created.
and the guy reacting to the video has no clue about the legends playing/singing.
@@gtpumps But he is trying to learn so give him some slack. You did not learn it all over night.
@johncarroll9489 I agree -- I think it's great that so many of these kids are reacting to songs that I knew when I was young. I'm 71, now!

Elvis recorded two years before Roy, but the similarity is probably because this recording was also under Sun Records like Elvis's.
Memphis is the birth place of Rock and Roll and Home of the Blues. Blues influenced Elvis and Roy. Banging early Rock and Roll!
He joined The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison (Beatles), Tom Petty. Jeff Lynn (ELO) and Bob Dylan.
Was that freaking Bruce Springsteen on guitar?
Yup.
Yah betcha
You ought to try to get hold of that entire show. -- it's all great! There's a lot of heavy talent on that stage.
Oh I love Roy Orbison’s music. I have an album of his and every single song on it is fantastic. I wish you could play them all.
The whole Black and White concert aired on PBS it was amazing and his last.
Roy was an avid motorcyclist. That particular cross was often associated with people who made and rode motorcycles. He also was a Baptist Christian.
What a fun video!! Roy was such a classy talent. A joy to watch.
wow, this was great!!!!! he was using Elvis' band, along with others on this!!!
Love that big old Gibson SG Roy is playing!
On that night he had an all star back up band. Roy and Elvis hit about the same time.
Orbison died of a heart attack in December 1988 at age 52, a month before the release of his song "You Got It." It was his first hit to reach the US & UK Top 10 in nearly 25 years. You should hear it. 😊
I LOVE that song!!
He was a heavy smoker
The truth is, nobody suspect anything about Roy. We just loved him.😊
When you're enjoying the music and not paying attention to the video, you might just miss a whole lot. 😄
Roy, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash were at Sun Sudio at the same time. B'B King recorded there too!
The Amelas One
Million dollar quartet
That was Bruce Springsteen playing guitar and Smiling in awe!
Elvis Costello was there too, and many many other great stars. The entire backup band for this is a superband themselves.
don’t forget the words from Springsteen’s “Thunder Road” - “Roy Orbison singing for the lonely. Hey that’s me and I want you only”
That's Bruce Springsteen next to him on guitar! Roy, Elvis, and Johnny Cash all came up through Sun records at roughly the same time so lots of crossover.
They new each other well. They were BOTH signed to Sun records.

That’s Bruce Springsteen playing in the guitar!!
There are plenty of songs to check out with Roy Orbison and everyone is really good !!!
I saw the same thing and thought that, but Bruce was a small boy when this was recorded

This is the original Rock and Roll. 😅😊
This was a special on TV in January 1988.
CCR does a great version of this too. Original was in 1956.

Most of the sun studios early recordings were played with a upright base. Looks like what they’re using here.
Love seeing Bruce Springstein in his beginning days. Never heard this song. Guess it never played in my area.
This was 1988. You need to go back to the early '70s for his beginning days.
Funky, bluesy back before everything had to have a “genre” just good music with some silly fun lyrics! Life was simpler then ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
Roy grew up in Wink Texas!
