  • (20 Sep 1977) Funeral of singer Maria Callas, in Paris: Friends and admirers of New York-born prima donna, Maria Callas, gathered at Paris's small Greek Orthodox church on Tuesday (20/9/77) to give the soprano her last ovation. A crowd of about 600 admirers burst into cries of "bravo maria" and thundered applause when the soprano's coffin was carried to a waiting hearse at the end of a simple 40-minute service

I watched the documentary "Maria Callas: Life and Art" I believe it was called. The final procession before she was cremated was silent, then a man yelled "Bravo Callas!" and the entire crowd joined in. I don't remember when I started to cry, but I know once the crowd started cheering, I had to pause it for a minute to collect myself. Truly a remarkable woman and artist.

So , she lived 2 years after Ari's death . We hear she went to visit him in the hospital in Paris, when he was ill , as Jackie O had gone back to NYC. She did not care for the old guy. She had gotten what she needed out of him and she was moving on. Maria was always there for him, even when he was married to the US gold digger. He got a run for his money when he married her. Another one of his mistakes !!!!!

why would you feel a defunct US actress and her useless daughter should not be at that funeral ? I think Maria was , way too good for them......She had the real talent, class and respect while Grace Kelly just slept with all of her costars and gave Rainier 2 millions , when she married him. She actually purchased her title......It was a publicity stunt. She sold her soul for a title and to have kids who turned out to be losers. You are right.....these two women had no business being there.

It's different thing the term "nationality" and different thing the term "citizenship". She was Greek by blood, because her parents were Greeks (we Greeks accept the right of blood), of course she born in USA so citizenship American ( in Aglo-Saxon world the is the right of land). When I was reported her as Greek I was referring to her Greek nationality according Greek perception and because I consider Nationality means origin in contrast to Citizenship means residence. In classical thinking, Nationality is more powerful to Citizenship. Contemporary thinking is also welcome, no quarrels. However Maria Callas is Maria Callas and we can all claim her as our Maria. In ceremony the language are French and Greek, sorry I can or translate the words properly ( someone asked for it).

There is no such thing as "greek blood" and you better get over this nonsense... Maria belonged to no nation and would be very upset to hear that she is claimed by one, for her blood.

Actually she was born in Washinton Heights in NY after her parents emigrated to America from Greece and thereby considered for much of her life American. She kept her American citizenship until she sought a divorce from her husband, Meneghini, in 1959. He would not grant her a divorce. Under Greek law at the time, if you were not married after 1946, in church, you were not considered married. So, to divorce her husband, and to make herself available fully to that nasty little Greek troll shithead leprechaun Onassis, she changed her citizenship status from American to Greek and died as a Greek citizen living in Paris.

She was Greek by ethnicity and American by citizenship! But you can't change the fact she was Greek as her parents were Greek too! End of story!

Δέσποινα Κούρου You couldn’t be more wrong. She was a New Yorker initially and then she became a woman of the world. Her Greek heritage was a large part of her but she was detached from her family but fell deeply in love with a Greek. She was a Greek New Yorker and Parisienne.

She was as Greek as the Goddess Athena. Pure, descendent from the ancients. Her face could have been a Praxilides sculpture

Who authorized for Maria to be cremated 3 hours after her death ?! How did they determine if she was murdered? It was rumored that she committed suicide, is that true ?

    • @KRISTIANITY_

I saw your comment and it really baffled me, 3 hours between death and cremation really does sound insane. And it even makes you wonder how in the world they had the time for a funeral service even. I checked in ChatGPT, it even told me they performed an autopsy on her to determine the cause of death as the heart attack. So, death, autopsy, funeral service, cremation - ALL within 3 hours. It just sounds completely crazy. And the chatbot told me it was mainly because these were her own funeral arrangements she had made prior, and authorized her ex-husband to do in case she dies, which apparently he did.
