Every Change Made to Hogwarts During The Harry Potter Films

  • In this video, I take a deep dive into every change made to Hogwarts castle throughout the eight Harry Potter films. Using floorplans of the castle, I focus in on how specific areas change and evolve and examine some of the reasons why. I also touch on how the castle was brought from the page to the screen and how the design team changed their approach to the castle over time.
    00:00 Introduction
00:15 Hogwarts Castle from the page to the screen
    02:02 The Herbology Greenhouses
    02:53 The Quidditch Training Grounds
    04:01 The Whomping Willow
04:34 The Prisoner of Azkaban Expansion
06:29 The DADA Tower, the Dark Tower and the Astronomy Tower
    07:24 The Transfiguration Courtyard
07:52 The Chamber of Reception and the Entrance Courtyard
    08:54 The Deathly Hallows Changes
    10:23 In Conclusion
The Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince and the Deathly Hallows all brought their own changes to the castle, it's architecture and layout. Some of these may have come from the visions of Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell and David Yates. But also from the excellent production design from Stuart Craig and his team. Harry Potter is a film franchise based on JK Rowling's books and starred Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and many more SEO friendly search terms.

It might not be the best straight adaptation, but Prisoner of Azkaban nailed the aesthetics in a way that none of the other films ever did. It toned down the overly whimsical and almost artificial look and design of the first 2 movies and made everything feel more grounded and lived in whiles still feeling plenty magical and mysterious, unlike the later films that got rid of too many of the fantastical aspects and made everything in the wizarding world feel far too modern.

So even those who were already involved in the previous movies had a part in the change, not only the new director. Prisoner of Azkaban was a reimagination of the saga. Like an alternate world of Harry Potter in a multiverse. I like to imagine how would it be if all of the movies were directed by Alfonso Cuaron, especially the first two movies but also the subsequent ones. The next directors tried to keep most of the changes made by Alfonso Cuaron but they also left their marks. @@SEELE-ONE It was always the plan that the movies would get darker, and you can see a difference in tone between the first two films. But I agree Film 3 went too far, so they actually had to reverse direction and get a bit lighter for the later films. I wasn't a fan of the silent movie touches, which added nothing and didn't fit. Also, Cuaron failed to give Michael Gambon good direction as Dumbledore, and it wasn't until Order of the Phoenix that he was properly reined in.

My headcanon for the changes of the castle is that the castle itself changes it's layout when required.
Maybe there were more students that had herbology so 2 additional greenhouses "magically" appeared. And maybe the castle anticipated the huge fight so it changed the entrance court.
I compare it a little bit to the room of requirement, which changes based on the needs of the person.

The thing with the statues outside the great hall, you see so many reactors watching deathly hallows part 2 and they’re amazed and emotional about the statue guards finally being able to do something and protect hogwarts. There’s the consensus that they’ve always been there so it was so mad a couple of years ago when I noticed they don’t actually appear at all until deathly hallows. They’ve always felt like they’ve just been there for the whole series.

Another real life location in England, other than Alnwick Castle, Durham Cathedral, Gloucester Cathedral and multiple locations across Oxford, that was used prominently in the films was Lacock Abbey:
    - The “Chapter House”: Mirror of Erised room (Philosopher’s Stone), Study Room (Chamber of Secrets) and the room where Snape and McGonagall examine the cursed necklace (Half-Blood Prince),
    - The “Sacristy”: Professor Snape’s Potions Classroom (Philosopher’s Stone),
    - The “Cloisters”: Hogwarts Hallways (Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets),
    - The “Warming Room”: Professor Quirell’s Defence Against the Dark Arts Classroom (Philosopher’s Stone).
Many other locations featured in the Harry Potter films in the medieval village of Lacock too. Plus there are some interesting lesser known locations that stood in for Hogwarts too, such as the “Dean’s Staircase” at St Paul’s Cathedral, London (Divination Staircase), or the “Fourth Form Room” at Harrow School in London (Charms Classroom).

What I would like to see is a very detailed analysis of Hogwarts in the order of the phoenix and half-blood prince games. Meticulously comparing every single room, corridor, courtyard etc. with its movie counterparts. Maybe sprinkle some information on how each location is connected to the next, and as a bonus if it’s consistent with the book. This easily makes 40 minutes of content, so splitting it into shorter videos and making it a series would make it manageable

This is probably an unpopular opinion but… IT’S A MAGIC CASTLE! I actually love every time it changes. It’s similar enough that it feels like the same place, but when you can do pretty much anything with a wave of a semi-sentient piece of wood then it would honestly seem diminished if the castle was the same every time we saw it. We know from thee Goblet of Fire that the inside of a place need not match the outside (the Weasley’s tent that they borrowed which means it’s not even the nicest available). If all 142 staircases inside can and do adjust their destination seemingly at random, why wouldn’t a random tower spring up or the entrance sprout a viaduct? I hate when people apply muggle logic to wizard architecture

Why move the entrance directly off the staircase and then in the same movie make the dormitory all the way in that tower? I'm so flustered thinking about it again.

@@hogwartsexpert | Sounds good! As controversial as this may be, the DHp2 version of Hogwarts is my favourite, albiet my personal changes would be:
      (DANGER: LONG AND OBNOXIOUS COMMENT)
      1) The Viaduct - There are 2 of them; the old viaduct from PS to HBP, and the new one with a pathway leading to Hogsmede Station and perimeter walls so that it's not just a flawed defense mechanism for the plot convenience of DHp2. 🤣
The Training Grounds - While partially swallowed up by the hills, the CoS version of this area and its corresponding tower remain in my ideal Hogwarts, but with small gothic features to match the rest of the school (e.g., the turrets becoming more spiked).
The Quad - A theory going around is that the Quad was sunken to basement level in the first 3 movies. I think this is a really unique idea and want to include it. The only difference is the second Boathouse pathway seen in the OotP and HBP games.
The Bell Towers and Greenhouses - The greenhouses are moved to the side of the Long Gallery and take on how they will look in Hogwarts Legacy, while the bell towers obtain their own courtyard, with curvy pathways leading back into the Training Grounds.
The DADA/Astronomy Tower - The books mention 5th Years witnessing Hagrid being attacked from the Astronomy Tower by members of the Ministry (I could be wrong), so the entire thing is inverted for that to happen. Also, the Chamber House from Durham Cathedral (where the Transfiguration lessons were filmed) is situated at the bottom of this tower since I couldn't plot the room anywhere else.
The Lookout Tower - Remember that wide tower on the corner of the Quad, connected to the Stone Bridge? Given the description of Ravenclaw Tower, I personally think the DHp2 version of the Lookout Tower is where that is.
With the exterior done, not much really changes on the interior except for the Grand/Marble Staircase. My headcanon would be that the Grand Staircase looks how they do from PS - HBP and they just stopped moving for the Battle, so extra steps were added to get around easier.
Long? Yes. Imaginative? Yep. That's my dream Hogwarts. lol

Awesome video! Growing up I was obsessed with the small changes made throughout the movies. Most changes are fine because they're relatively small and it's a magic castle. BUT the grand staircase change in the last movie was really jarring and I think a wasted opportunity for a cool set piece on the moving stairs.

Great video, I’m in the middle of building a Lego moc of hogwarts starting with the great hall, have the blueprints book, but trying to build something that fits across all the movies is a challenge, not so much for the great hall itself, which is largely unchanged (except for the hogwarts teachers dias which changes almost every film) but for the entrance / anteroom which changes radically between movies! Look forward to the next video!

My favorite model of hogwarts is the half-blood-prince model, it just feels very nice and polished off, except for one thing, the training grounds tower, it’s just a ripoff bell tower and it doesn’t have the as much magic, because it used to be a giant structure in the first movie, now it’s just a little tiny tower
Edit: something you missed was the lookout tower, which I think only changed in the deathly hallows, to an open tower instead of a generic hogwarts tower

Love the video man! Some hopefully helpful advice I think you should either keep your current channel name or if you really want to change it maybe change it to something less Harry Potter specific. With or a more neutral name it opens your content up to a more diverse range of topics which would probably benefit you and your channel in the long run. Completely your choice of course. Only you know what works best for you and your image.
Side note: On the subject of the Grand Staircase in The Deathly Hollows I think that the tower moving upwards would probably look the same with the moving staircases and all. I think they just showed what the bottom floor looked like in those two films. I could be missing something though, if I am I would love to know if you have any insight on that.

I always wished we, as the viewing public, could at least see 2-D CAD drawings to help in understanding the castle layout. As someone who does 2-D CAD for a living, whenever I had visited the 'Making Of....' tour, any drawings shown at all were high up on walls and just part of the overall decor rather than artefacts in their own right. Many is the time I have wished to thoroughly survey that scale model at the climax of said tour - ah, but a lass can dream - great vid, thanks.

This is a bit of a niche interest, but one I very much share. It's such a good design, the films hit it out of the park with it, I think. Ideally they'd have used the HBP design from the beginning, but only the first 3 books were out when they designed the castle originally, I imagine. It's such a good design that even the games use it (even if it's not entirely obvious at first, like with PS/CoS PC).
I have a similar (and 1000x more niche) interest in the Egg Carrier from Sonic Adventure. It's one of my favourite settings from a game, and it's used well to tell a story through gameplay.

The castle grounds change in Azkaban were very confusing for me at the time. They have gone from big courtyard-style garden into the woods with stonewalls to pretty mutch completly open, kinda mountainous terrain which leads to Hagrid, the woods, a massive lake and god knows. My mental image of Hogwarts from the books was always much more blocky than the films. Hogwarts was one enormous building rather than a collection of towers separated by bridges. This was because of the way Rowling described the floors of the castle. At one point I read it had “seven floors” in line with her love of the number. Dumbledore warning students away from the third floor corridor in the first story is confusing in a castle with a dozen different towers. Be more specific Albus. Third floor of which tower?
