As a former employee of RAC, they are absolutely rubbish. They employ third-party contractors for most of the recoveries (and they pay the least for the service, hence the long waiting times) and if its long distance, the vehicles get link recoveries, so you end up waiting hours at motorway services for another contractor.
Having worked in the recovery industry as one of the 3rd party contractors I agree. And then RAC are slow paying their bills so they go on stop with companies then the number of companies they use drops because they haven’t paid. To be fair it’s not just the RAC
@@beaulocks68AA is better by miles, I've broken down three times in the past 2 months. First time my gearbox gave up in the countryside at around 11am... from the moment i reported the breakdown to the moment they got to me it took no more than 25 minutes. 2nd time broke down on the motorway in rush hour busy morning traffic towards Leeds at 8am. Got to the hard shoulder, reported the breakdown and again, no more than 25 minutes and the patrol was with me. 3rd time my crank pulley split in two pieces but i managed to pick up on it due to the smoke and burning rubber smell. Was luckily at a mates house so reported the breakdown due to me not being in a rush and already at my mates house in a safe location they took around 40 minutes which i didn't mind at all. The best thing is the AA parts and labour cover covered the cost of the Gearbox + labour AND the crank pulley + labour meaning i didn't have to pay a single penny
Great video Dean. Fantastic customer service on your part. People don’t always see the hard work that goes into running a business. They only see the rewards of that hard work 🤔
I don’t usually comment on videos but it’s good to get a little glimpse into the absolute graft it takes to run a business. I feel your pain 100% but I’d wager that this will actually put you in good stead as any potential customers now know that you’ll dig in and go that extra mile when the poop hits the fan. Great video mate!
I would say you have saved yourself around £3000-£3500 doing it yourself so that's worth smiling about. I would also normally replace the oil feed line and washers along with new oil and filter.Normally you have a syringe of oil with the new turbo to prime it as well, make sure you do that. Obviously you are going to clean the intake ect.. But well done on doing it yourself.
Brilliant video enjoyed it, yeah modern vehicles are a test to work on, used to be a car mechanic only managed a year still remember doing a turbo on a Kia sportage and that was an awful job good on you for getting it done and keeping at it!
There needs to be someone present at the breakdown to sign the damage report before it’s recovered. Otherwise they’ll be liable if the customer tries blagging pre existing damage. Surely you do the same on your customers vehicles before you transport them?
Well done to ya pal, it takes hard work & plenty of skill - dedication & determination to run a business, I’m the same - as a mechanic & full time dad - I really feel you pain, Good work - dedication - good staff - family & friends will help you through it all, however credit where credit is due & well done to you great work, PS it’s easier to take the engine out on the fiat when doing the turbo 🔧 👍🏻👏🏻
Totally agree Dean that being a small business it’s the letting the customers down which really hurts ☹️ things go wrong Ofc but can normally be sorted out hopefully quickly unless your relying on the RAC of course 😂😂
Ive seen and herd lots of turbos going after dpf remap.. i rekon that because it might spin more freely due to no dpf that the weaker parts if you like are giving out..just a sheere coincidence ive seen it lots of times
Agree with others that this sort of occasional departure from your more usual but equally great content is no problem. I do sometimes wonder though if having a 'buddy' to help out would remove some workload and also give you someone to bounce things off. Cost will be a factor of course but seeing it work on other channels, its got to be worth a go?
Green Flag no different broke down near Chester they left me roadside for 6 hours in the middle of summer took 11 hours to get home on a 3 hour journey.

Honestly mate I think you should do a mixture of your usual car content and recovery stuff. I'm always so interested in videos that show the business challenges
As always, a brilliant video. Although the content is a break away from your usual video’s, dare I say it, it’s good to see a little bit of real life trial’s and tribulations. Doing more video’s like this alongside your usual content may boost your channel to the next level. I, for one, would like to see what happens next with the fix and maybe even the purchase of a new truck. Keep up the good work.
Thanks mate appreciate it. It won’t be enough for a whole video but maybe I’ll do a short on it… unless the turbo doesn’t fix it, then it will be a new video 😂
Not sure how it works in the UK but isn't a DPF delete illegal there and could void insurance? Might not be the best idea to mention that in the video, especially for a business vehicle.
These days the amount of of crap fitted around the engine for ‘ emissions’ control is mad. Makes your life so much harder and inevitably costs much more to do in time and money for what used to be considered a simple enough job.

The RAC are useless, my son brokedown on the M5 near Birmingham at 9am driving a Ford C-Max, with 3 children, his wife and his 76yr old nan, he was driving a Ford C-max which had a knackered injector, they basically abandoned him, and his passengers at a shopping centre ( just to get them off the motorway ), 1 of his children is Autistic and at the time was under 2yrs old, the same child is epileptic and has daily medication that has to be kept cool, which isnt a issue with a running car as my son has a fridge that plugs into the 12v charger in the car, but the issue was that the engine wouldnt run, and the car battery died trying to keep the medication cold, they where stranded for 12 hours before eventually the RAC got them a taxi back to South Wales ( while my son had to stay with the vehicle until 4am the next morning when they got another taxi to bring him back to South Wales ), the taxi did not have room for their luggage so they had to leave it with my son in the car, the RAC kept telling my son they would get him transport and he would leave the car keys on top of a wheel for the tow driver to use to load the car, my son refused to do this as at that time there a gang of kids ( teenagers 15-19yrs old or there abouts ) running around being a nuisance and did not want to leave the vehicle unattended with the keys not hard to find as it would have at the very least had items stolen from it or at worse burned or just vandalised, I kept getting in my car to go pick them up, get my son to drive my car back with the kids etc and I would have stayed with his car, but everytime he contacted the RAC they kept saying the driver will be with you in 20mins or is on the way, my son didnt want me to be halfway then for me to turn around, after this I cancelled my membership after being with the RAC for 16yrs and would never use them again.
I use Green Flag….thankfully I have only called them three times since 1998, every time they have been fast, efficient and very helpful….then I sold the Jeep….the most unreliable 12 month old car I have ever encountered…sold as a non runner at 2 years old…but Recovery was excellent! 😱😃😃😃
