USB Device Over Current Status Detected!!
System will shut down after 15 seconds.
This is a 14 months old Asus Essention Series computer desktop. It has an Intel Core I5-3340S processor @ 2.80 ghz, 4gb DDR3 RAM, and an Asus P8H61-M PRO/CM6630-8/DP_MB. As you can see upon pressing the turn on button, It does not want to boot up, and displays the following message:
USB Device Over Current Status Detected!!
System will shut down after 15 seconds.
Safety and disclaimer first! Any computer repair involves a certain risk to yourself and or your computer. Seek professional or other help if you are not confident. I will not be responsible for any damage you may cause to yourself or your computer, do at your own risk.
Now the Disclaimer out of the way! Let’s heal your pc!
Here’s how to fix
Make sure your desktop is completely switched off and unplugged from the electrical socket. Go ahead and pop open the bonet, i.e the side panel. Use an anti static wrist strap or touch the case before each time you touch the inside of the computer to discharge any static electricity.
In this case it is due to a short of one of the USB ports from the front panel, which is connected via a USB cable to a USB header connector on the motherboard.
Indeed upon closer inspection I did finally notice that one of the USB port was damaged, the little black tab was missing, as shown in the picture. My guess is the client may have inserted a dodgy USB stick which broke it, or upon insertion or removal of the USB stick it broke and caused a short.
So there you go, I simply disconnected the USB cable from the header, plug the power cable, and turn the computer back on, and Voila! Fixed! The client will probably not be able to use that front USB port, and a replacement is unwanted at his time, there are plenty of back USB ports for the job.

Holy crap. My computer has had a mangled front port since I bought it. Was never an issue. Tonight when I got home from work I couldn't figure out why I was getting a dreaded message and couldn't start my computer. You just saved my ass dude. Thanks a million.
Thank you, UA-cam guy, for your unending wisdom that fixed my computer. My father and I had no clue what to do otherwise.
I still get the same error message after removing the USB connector.
I know this is kinda late but did u fix it ? And how bc im getting the error after trying everything ...
@@rufusishere did u fix it? Im having problems with it

Thank you so much dude!
My computer was slow so I closed everything and restarted. Next thing this error pops up and I had a submission with a very tight deadlines.
You saved me
6 years after you posted this video it's still helping us, thanks alot man!
Now its 9
And I'm now im watching ,I try it later, hopefully it work
Thanks for the video. I put a Blue Tooth done in the front port. Turned out to be damaged and was probably shorting. I pulled the device out, put the silver divider back and it fired right up.
i cant tell how much i thank you man, fixed it myself in 1 minute instead of paying a lpt and waiting for experts to fix it :)
Worked! Thank you sooo much. Friendly reminder that the ports on the motherboard will STILL WORK- so if you want to use USB devices just plug them in the back of the pc through the IO board.
Yep - you nailed it. I had a busted front USB jack but now just failed with the short. Has no idea such a thing would happen. Your vid was a great help - thanks!🍺
Thank you!!!! What a life saver. I am attending a job fair tomorrow and I didn't upload my revised resume to my google drive and this error popped up. I'm up and running now. I can get some rest. Thanks again sir.
I've done that but it still doesn't work. It's probably the USB ports at the back ffs what do I do then?
So how did it went for you both?
TheGameChainJS I think I've got the same prob
same problem here
TheGameChainJS Try changing the power supply.
So I unplugged the front USB ports on my motherboard, and it worked. Then randomly it happened again a day later. I looked closely and there was a loose metal pin on the port. I used tweezers and yanked it out. It’s working fine again.
Probably going to end up buying a new case😒
this is very easy to fix and i just knew it now,let me teach you.
1. turn off your PC
2. remove all the usb cables for your peripherals (mouse, keyboard, headset etc.)until theres nothing left.
3. wait for a minute and then turn on the pc.
it should work and while your back at the windows startup, start connecting all your peripherals again. I think its because of the power the peripherals are consuming because all my stuff has RGB so i turned all of them off.
Thanks you😊
@@elmichi9304 np my guy!
Discharging your static works only when plugged in. So touch the metal case first, then unplug and work away.
Yes thanks, noob mistake early on, been doing that in subsequent videos...
If this don't work unplug your pc for 5 Minutes, then unplug all USB's , then open PC, put the Mainboard Battery out / in , start the PC without USB's ... plug in USB's normal ... thank me later
Still unworkable
Man you saved me. I mean we use the PC as a TV and we have the TV and all connected to it with two hard drives etc and we watch cartoon and movies with our kids and you totally saved out butts. YOU ROCK! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
hey bro, i know im late but i removed the front port J USB. and when i turned it on it still says the same thing?
Thanks I was about to going to repairing shop but I have removed usb cable and it's started working.
You have saved my 500 indian rupees.
Ha ha! Thank you very much for the info! I also appreciate that you wrote down the process in the description because I don't have a big enough bandwidth to stream videos where I'm at. You were pretty much my last resort. Thank you very much for that!
I tried doing this but my monitors would freeze when loading up? Does this happen to anyone?
How am I the only person in 385 comments to still have a problem??! :( Ive opened the side, removed the connected USB ports, dusted out the interior, checked the USB sockets (which are fine) booted it back up again and I still get the error! :( There was 3 potential sockets to the USB drive, I removed them all after trying to eliminate them one by one and it still not working. Please does anyone have any other suggestions??
Some people have suggested it could be on of the USB ports soldered onto the motherboard, from the back or inside the board itself. I don't have any means of testing this I'm afraid, as I do not have that board anymore.
Awesome, thanks. Following this I worked out which USB was shorting out got by PC back again. You're a genius!!
Helpful maybe, genius absolutely not, but thanks and you are welcome!
So im guessing the problem is just the front pc usb plugs were somehow damaged causing it to shutdown?
Disconnecting the damaged USB port from the motherboard was the ticket. Thank you!
very good, spotted the foul usb port and unplugged it. PC start properly. Thanks for the quick solution.
Oh my god seriously thank you so much you saved my z78 motherboard I was about to cry I either paid 200$ for another one or I had to completely move platforms I love you
Thanks buddy. It really helped me! greetings from Toronto
It will work if you remove the little cables from the mother board. If you remove the cable from the panel it might not work
Dude, wtf, I tried everything I knew. I got this old case from a friend, would never figure this by myself. Yes, there is a defective usb front panel slot and that was what was causing this exact error. You're my personal hereo, friend.
I am from Venezuela , a country of Spanish language , but your video helped me a lot , I give you a super like
Omg I was not competent enough to remove the cable, but I figured you can also just straighten the usb pins so they dont touch the sides, it fixed the problem for me pc starts instantly again!:) good luck
I have an ASUS motherboard LGA1155 socket and I am facing the very same difficulties as you have shown on the video. My PS2 keyboard is not recognized through the PS2 port but through a USB port using a PS2/USB adapter, but even though recognized I still can't use it and can't enter BIOS . Onboard graphics card doesn't post therefor I have to use a PCIE graphics card in order to see the above mentioned messages. I have tried everything with the MB mounted in a pc case, and taken out, disassembled all the units connected to it (e.g. CPU, GPU etc.), I took the CMOS battery out of its socket, cleared the CMOS through a CMOS jumper but the problems still remain. Motherboard, CPU and RAM memories are compatible so there is no problem in pc parts compatibility. If you happen to think of an advice for me I would gladly listen. Thank you!
Thank you for the video, after backtracing the cable from the damaged usb cable and disconnecting it from the motherboard it worked perfectly. I took 5 minutes and saved me a lot of heartache! Good video!
Hey. I unplugged the Front USB cable but the problem persists. For my case, I believe the short circuit came from the USB hub attached to motherboard.
You saved my childhood I can’t live without my computer I want to hug you
Thank you so much. I had same issue and its working again. Though it felt nerve racking as I was unsure I would be able to do it. It really was simple. Thanks so much again for your time in doing this video.
Work first try, been trying all night thank u
Thank you for this video, As soon as you start explaining what it meant i remembered that I spilled some soda on my front usb ports. I guess in the long run. It's time for a new case but for now my computer works just fine.
so. how do i know which usb is faulty? i am getting this message as well, today. i dont see any physical breaks or malfunctions in any usb ports. how can i find the shorted one? i hope its an easy fix but i have cleaned and unplugged all of my usb connectioncms, and re attached them all. no luck so far. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks
Thank you so so so much for your explanation! My pc had this issue like 30 min ago, and your video was one of the first to show up. Thanks for keeping it short and simple, you saved my day!
Had the exact issue, but was able to fix it thanks to you. Keep it up! Great channel :)
Hey i have this issue and disconnected the USB front panel connection, but getting the message still...what if the USB port is on the motherboard?
Woot!! It worked!! And I have a USB port on the front in the same condition. One of the black thingies is missing.
I unplugged the USB power the same way you did and it worked.
Thank you for posting this video. It is exactly what I needed to get my computer working again.
Great fix thank you, but it gets crazier... I do not disengage the front
USB port but instead insert a stick that was in it before last shut
down and the comp works ... I take that stick out again and the comp
does not boot instead I get the massage "usb device over current status detected" ans in 15 sek it shuts down. I put the stick back again star and the comp boots again normally, I have full access to the stick too the port is not damaged... any ideas?
Having the same issues now- so frustrating I haven’t plugged/unplugged any usb. I asked myself-Why the heck would it short? Did Antman got into it?. I just reinstalled my pci express card before error appeared. I unplugged all USB connector to board already - still error reports. Perhaps the rear ports? But how to disconnect those are soldered direct to mobo :(
I had a strong idea that it was the USB ports that were the problem since like your ASUS, three of the front USB ports were Brocken, they just fell apart, only one still worked. I found your video that backed up my suspicion that what the problem might be, and sure enough that's what it was. Thank you for your video.
Holy shit thank you m8 you just saved me a 120$ trip to Fry's.
Kudos.
Wow thanks so much. This is the first time I have ever tried to fix any computer and it worked. I will now order the new cable that I found to be defective and fix it myself. Thanks again.
I tried your solution but it didn't work so I have a question. I got an old desktop from a friend that didn't work and I suspected that it was the power supply so I grabbed the spare that was closest to the original. However, upon booting up it says that a usb device over current detected. Is this a problem because I'm not using the OEM PSU?
I carefully looked at all of the usb ports and no pins were damaged at all
Your problem is solved or not? I know its been 7 years but i haven’t got any solution for my problem
How much work effort is it to change the entire front ports? I've installed my PC's power supply and graphics card. But guessing I'd have to take a lot out to access the front ports?
Don't really know much about computers but this fixed the problem. Thanks... dunno why it came up though, those USB ports haven't worked in years
+HealMyPc need help man. Made my PC everything boots up fine fans running, but no signal to the monitor ? "First time boot,
+HealMyPc monitor works fine plug hdmi in my ps4 and works fine, when I put it on it powers on then 20 seconds later it powers off by it self
+HealMyPc would u like me to make a short video and send it to u to see what's happening ?
Idk what the best part is him having the same exact computer as me or him having the same computer and monitor as me
I had the same problem and I solved the problem right this way! Perfect video. Thank you so much
I hope it isn't too late to ask you this, but what if both of my front USB ports are broken? Do I still need to unplug the single cord or is there another one that I need to unplug?
I have a big problem I will try to explain it but im from germany. My pc shows me the same every time i want to start it and i already found the damaged usb port but its in the back and its directly connected to the mainboard without any cable.. is there anything what i can do? 🙄
already did the same but still, not working... even bios is not showing up.. upon turning it on, the message just popping out then it shuts down.. any more help??
Just had the same exact issue, same model pc, same USB port broken, same solution! Cheers and thanks for the help!
My computer says American Megatrends but at the bottom of the screen it says press F1 to continue and when I press it Windows just boots up normally!
When I installed my graphics drivers the screen wouldn't come back!
funny story i tried to my iphone charger in the right port (the latest version) and accidentally put it inside the usb port😭
wow thank you sooo much I was freaking out there for a moment! I knew my front usb were messed up but it never did this till now!
thank you again!
I disconnect everything and check all the USB ports even on the inside wheres the wires are connected to the motherboard and they're ok.. and it's still saying USB overpower ..... is there anything else I can try??
I had a similar problem. Might still have i dont know yet as its being tested with OCCT CPU is showing 100% so im putting it through its paces and its still on.. I bought a Sata usb adapter to plug a 3.5 hdd into a connector then power it via usb and a ac adapter into plug socket. Worked fine and can make any hdd turn into an external drive but then i changed the usb port it was in and i noticed the hdd kept turning itself off. Pc would then crash and front Blue light would flash like in sleep mode. It would then take ages to turn back on. Usb ports use volts and these can easil;y be the fault, shorting etc. Just look at each port, one might be damaged or try to find the faulty port and do not use it.
idk if im dumb or not, but when i open my case up, i dont get the same view of my pc as you are getting, my motherboard is behind my graphics card, and i am unable to see my usb ports on the motherboard, could someone please help me?
Thanks a millin times man. It's now running again to windows cause of your help and guidance. It should take me a thousand bucks to get it right in hands of a mean gready Repairman
Thank you pal, ☺️🌹
Is it possible that a psu not supplying enough power can cause this? I changed my case and my mother board and still have this problem /:
what do you do if there's a dead USB port in the motherboard itself??? happened to me and now my pc is bricked
I tried it but failed to work. cant disconnect back usb ports as it is fixed on MB (ASUS MZN-MS-XE). What can i do. go for an new pc?
thank you. i have question about my pc if i let it a long time without operation it is not work easily. whats problem

I am trying your suggestions but not working my pc fix this problem, you are suggested me other techniques
This worked for our Asus motherboard build that was giving this error. Thank you!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH EVEN 8 YEARS LATER THIS HELPE ME!
What about if you installed a usb driver and that's what prompted the message? I'd like to uninstall it but I can't since I can't get past this screen. Thank you!
+ash healmypc99 I figured it out. I tried unplugging what I had in the usb ports and like magic my computer turned on. That allowed me to fix what I did. Thank you!
I have pretty much the same pc as you, if I unplug the usb is it only one usb port that wont work ? will I eventually have to replace the usb ports altogether ? thanks..milo
Thank you you saved me a trip to the shop I have an M51AC Asus similar set with front ports one busted up so eventually pc stopped booting simply unplugged one thing from bottom that seemed to have 2 white wires from the top and it booted up after
I just pressed a "reset" button the case I bought had for some reason. Is there any permanent damage to any other components?
Can I again connect usb cable on usb mohterboard?
What to do i can't fix my pc with your trick :((
I currently have the same problem. Hopefully it's just an usb port and not a transistor.
Thanks, your fix in your video fixed my computer and now it boots up completely, just fine. :)
is there a way to disable the back usb ports? I got the same error and want to be sure
THANK YOU SO MUCH ITS BEEN A WEEK SINCE I HAD THAT PROBLEM AND NOW I DID IT! YOU ARE MY SAVIOR
Hey I need help I get the same error but I got into bios but know I can't at all what can you suggest? I've been having this problem on my new built pc, the speaker doesn't been and everything is detected, the only problem is the USB current! please help!!!!
+HealMyPc Yes I actually got into the BIOS but when I turned it off the error appeared again! I got into the BIOS twice, what can you suggest because all parts are new, I'm starting to think the motherboard needs a new CMOS battery.
+Alan Serrano The only way I could get into BIOS is removing the motherboard battery and reinstalling it could
be the CMOS battery that has gone bad? This is my motherboard Asus P8H61 I-R2.0 it's paired with Intel i3 2120 with 8 gb of crucial RAM.
+HealMyPc Okay I'll try and switch the CMOS battery, but could it be the USB headers? When I connect the keyboard its detected by every onboard USB header when I move the keyboard into different USB ports.
+HealMyPc Okay I jut swapped and it worked installed Windows amd updated drivers but when I turned it off the error showed again this doesn't make sense I was using it like of it were new and I get the error! Im getting tired of it!
+HealMyPc well No but I just figured to buy a new motherboard and CPU so everything works great now.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Worked flawlessly. You saved my ass there LMAO! :D
try pulling out the gold wires on the bad USB port with a pair of tweezers or needle nose plyers I did on my PC it worked the other USB ports works fine now it fixes the short by removing them.
Same
Thank youu So Muchh Todayy I got that issue I use your Tip and It's Working ❤❤❤
Thanks for keeping it short and simple.
Regards 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH I WAS WORRIED THAT I COULDNT BE ON IT AND THIS HELPED!!
You are welcome!
My computer has started to do this but I re-started it again as I didn't manage to read what it said and it starts just fine but has done it both times I've turned it no now.
wat to do if the problem is not in the front pannel usb but the back pannel(motherboard)usb??..any help for that?
Hmm...thanx for replying while most ppl won't even bother doing that....I think I'll give my motherboard for check up&repair since its still in warranty.Thank You appreciated ur help
What if you get this error on a laptop? It doesn't appear during the BIOS, but it does when loading Linux. Is there a fix?
+ash healmypc99 Yes, I've seen the error during a Ubuntu boot and other distros like Fedora and Arch. I have plug and unplug USB drives 4-5 times to get it to work.
i reset my pc and when i turn on my pc it pops up and says f12 or esc help me pls
+HealMyPc f12 says that tou will all created kes etc
+HealMyPc and esc to continue
