- In this video I give you everything you need to bring quail home for less than $100, and a bonus at the end on how you can raise Coturnix Quail indoors. Great setup if you live in an apartment.
Here's the link to that quail drinker base- www.amazon.com/Miller-730-MIL...
I feel a new happiness on earth to see this video. If anyone is caring for quail then lets be life long friends with each other.
Hello friend, I'm from the future and I raise quail.
I actually DO have quail in my apartment. It isnt ideal esp when roosters get to crowing. but I only have a few birds so it isnt too bad. I find it is better to use solid bottom cages with shavings so I use rabbit cages for pet rabbits you can get in a pet store. I have to clean the shavings out pretty much every day. I have 3 cages plus my brooder. I keep 5 or 6 adults in each cage. I eat the extra males as soon as they are 5 or 6 weeks old. It would be great if I had a house with a yard or at least a garage but well I do what I can with what I have. It was this video that convinced me to do this, it was an absolutely crazy idea to raise quail in my apt but its working.
This is such an awesome success story! Please show us some pictures of your setup on the Urban Aviary Facebook group.
ymimad49 Are quail stinky, or dirty? Many of my friends say quails take a lot of care and stink of the house.
They can. A bit of apple cider vinegar with the mother in their drinking water helps a lot though
Which breed do you have ? Who is crowing ? Jumbo Bobwhite ? Crow's the loudest, or the A.M. ? Or the many other smaller sizes, ? Which do you have ?
I have the same crazy idea.
Don't feel odd.
I got a very late start on mowing grass because mower was broke down. When I finally got to it the grass was pretty tall and was seeding already. I had big clumps all over the place. As it dried a bit the grass was really lite and fluffy.I ended up by accident needing some bedding to line the bottom of a couple boxes. .The grass turns into like a matt and the birds really like the stuff. It absorbs moister better than shavings and when you change it ,you can just roll it up in one piece. There are a lot of little green seeds that the birds seem to like. One clump had a couple little beatles crawling around on it and of course they all wanted it. Had to be the very first bug they had ever seen. Beware! You will fall in love with these birds .
I had an idea. If you invert your 70L tub, line the opening with 10mm mesh, and stack it in a wooden shelf, you can use the lid as a "catch tray" lined with hay to catch the droppings for easy cleaning and composting. You can cut a simply hinged and latched door into the plastic side for access to quails, feeders and waterers. The system could be based on shelves and build in modular fashion.
FYI: Cedar shavings cause respiratory infections in Coturnix which often leads to death.
That is actually a complete fallacy. I have found no scientific studies to back that up, just people on forums regurgitating an urban myth with no base of origin. It's one of those misnomers out there like quail breaking their necks if cages are too tall, or calling any white Coturnix Quail a "Texas A&M". I'd be happy to revisit this topic however if you can provide me with a well documented and preformed scientific study. Because I can find absolutely nothing. No disrespect implied here at all, I hope I am conveying sincere respect.
Urban Aviary Cedar is a terrible substrate for reptiles and birds. It can and will cause respiratory issues and can kill your animals, especially reptiles. Calling it a complete fallacy seems ridiculous when a simple Google search can bring up mutiple links on cedar bedding and the issues it can cause, especially over longer periods of time.
I second this, although to be clear it's red cedar that's bad. You can find this in numerous sources across the web. Yellow and sitka cedar are ok, as they don't produce the same oils. Otherwise, thanks for the info!
+Dylan Kelsch just because it's on google doesn't make it a fact.
I thought was a fallacy also, but many years of rescue showed how red cedar dust and bigger pieces get inhaled eaten and drank causing problems and death at times. Though some rodents canines and birds seek out red cedar for their nests.
My 6 y/o son and I started incubating Quail eggs last week. We have been cramming ever since, trying to learn as much as possible. I have found your videos most helpful! Thanks for posting so much information, we really appreciate it!
You bet! Thanks for thr kind words!
The beauty of Quail is that you can do that. Easy bird to keep vs. Chicken so you can learn on the fly with great UA-camrs. And fortunately, there is a LOT of Quail info. on UA-cam and online from people raising them and giving good tips for us newbies. You got into it at the right time, it's popular now and literally being called, "the new Chicken". Great bird for beginners, so many advantages over Chickens and with the low cost of startup and convenience of keeping them literally anywhere, is very appealing. Especially to the urban Farmer.
I just finalized with a fella on facebook to buy quail, $3 each for 10 of them. I am so excited and I think I've watched this video 40 times. I pick them up this Monday
I'm going to vlog the whole process if anyone would like to follow along
That's awesome!
Good walk-through - thanks!
That’s so funny I though I was the only one with the aquarium idea. I have been brooding chickens for the first 3-5 weeks in an old 40 gal I have and was planning on using that and a 135 long divided in two to brood out and raise quail this coming year. I was still planning on getting separate cages for my breeders though.
great video, clear concise, simple
+Moriah Hill Thanks, that's how I was trying to keep it!
Wow! This is exactly the info I was looking for! Thank you so much for taking time to make video and share with us.
Great info. Thanks for the work.
Thank you for that helpful info! God bless!
Thanks for the Video you got the wheels in my Head turning.
Love your channel! Subscribed!
Thanks!
great vid, my friend =)
Hi new sub here, I plan on starting quail in my home, the landlord is no onboard for chickens so I decided to do quail probably in the basement, along with meat rabbits. I think the landlord is worried about noise with the neighbors....I'm glad you mentioned using fish tanks I have 3 from being is the aquarium hobby for years, and I already have a pet angora rabbit so I can use her cedar shavings for the quail. My plan to keep the noise down from the roosters is to on keep one for each tank the rest will be hens, thanks for the great info and ideas!
How did it go? Were you successful?
@@LarkinJackson hi, it went just fine...for 2 1/2 yrs I did quail only in my basement (not recommended with the finished basement we had at the time, the carpet constantly needed steam cleaning so it didn't smell like bird droppings even though they never we're on the rug)...we raised and harvested a many quail during this time. We kept the rabbits in the garage and I couldn't get
my boy to properly mate with my females (probably because he was to fat ) so they became pets. Fast forward to today I just moved on my own property and I'm starting my quail breeding again and I have new rabbits along with my original 2 females and a slew of chickens and turkey's. It's been less then a month I've been on my property and I already have 30 quail eggs and 12 Serama chicken eggs in the incubator....thanks for asking ! Have a great day
@@tamaracross9 I actually thought you wouldn't reply to this. Thanks 👍😊
Great tips! Thank you!
Very good info.
Great video 👍
thanks for the response
Really helpful
Straight forward. Enjoyed the presentation. I have enjoyed keeping my covey. Some heartache. Same with my chickens. Not quite as loud as chickens. Not quite the smell...
Very good presentation.
Great video
I would really like to see your glass quail setup. I hadn't thought of using aquariums for bird housing.
Thanks for the information
nice to see a video :D
Nice vid....lots of info...keep it up
+Ground Prepper Thanks!
I paid 7 dollars a piece for my coturnix quail. I love them
I would definitely be interested in the water feeder. the screw on one i'm sick of trying to flip it and not waste so much.
Thank you
Thank you, now I can get eggs! Lol
but had this start really been a good one
I really enjoy your videos Thank You. I Started raising quail a few months ago and i enjoy it. I need help on purchasing a incubator i tried to make my own but it didn't work out. What would you suggest? Something not to expensive also easy to us. Thanks Again Vincent
+Vincent Holland Hey Vincent, I got your email and responded back to you on this question.
I didn't receive it can you send it again thanks
I just sent it, try your spam folder.
I bought quail cups for a watering system for my grown birds or larger chicks.
this is so good . I want to raise some of the Quail how can I get some in Ghana
ok will do
I was looking information about bobwhite quail and fun out that bobwhites quail start laying eggs when they have 24 week old compared to the common quail it can lay eggs and grow up in 6 week old so the question is how fast bobwhite quail grow up and if is good quail to have in the back yard? Thank you for all your help
For meat and eggs production the Bobwhite is inferior in every way. They grow slower, lay later and only lay seasonally. Coturnix will lay year round. Bob White's also often have regulations on them because they are a game bird. I don't see any reason to get bob-whites if you want meat and eggs.
Do you recommend medicated or non medicated feed? We use Manna Pro gamebird/snowbird feed. Than you
It's up to you, but I prefer non medicated. It helps to pass on more resilient genetics.
Do you have video on set up quails in aquarium?
Thanks my friend... I had check online Texas Park and Wildlife but didn't see anything on quail raisin in your backyard ? is a quail a game bird
+Leo Huggy Again it depends on the state. From what I know, Texas is pretty friendly towards it though. Usually the only requirements are for native species like Bobwhite or California Quail.
Leo Huggy well quail are members of the pheasant family so I think so
Yes. Quial are a game bird. And regularly hunted all over. In Texas you should have at least 2 different breeds of quail in the wild.
I think Texas has mountain quail and bobwhites in the wild
yeah
So Ive been looking into getting quail for a few years, and this past weekend I saw someone selling coturnix quail for $2 each, and they looked fully grown. I was so excited I bought 25, and forgot to ask how old they were. I have been feeding them a grain mix with some added dried mealworms for extra protein. What age do coturnix quail usually start laying? They are about the size of a tennis ball.
6-8 weeks. I imagine you'll see eggs on a week or so.
Urban Aviary awesome thanks! Great videos btw
The 6-8 weeks is at the fast end of the spectrum. Most of the quail I raise start actually laying around the 10week mark some as late as 12weeks
@@Banishedsoulsofficial are you based out of Gulf Breeze FL? I live right down the road from there!
thanks sooooo helpful but can u use hay
Thinking about growing meat birds for resale. How much food does it take per bird to raise 8 weeks?
I have a question I think I sent you a pic of my quail that had the messed up eye I thought it was cuz he got pecked but I hatched some babies from him and 3 of them eyes are messed up like him they are 5 days old idk what to do
Did you post that on the Urban Aviary facebook forum?
My quail only have a plywood floor he seems fine with it should i leave it like that or not?
I would definitely put down some bedding
If you are referring to the big packages of it about 3 or more feet tall and about 1 1/2 to 2 foot L and W, from a farm feed and supply store and typically packed in thick brown paper bag type material, then yes, great suggestion. They run about $20 here in Canada, for the same thing and are an excellent deal. I discovered this long ago, when keeping other cage pets. You get WAY more for your money getting your Pine or whatever shavings from there, than a pet store or the pet section of your local Walmart or similar dept. store.
Total rip off, you can get 3-4 times that amount for the same money from a more appropriate source for bigger amounts like livestock purposes. You'll save a tonne of money that way, NEVER get them from a pet store or pet dept. if you can avoid it. The markup on that stuff is absolutely ridiculous, for literally the same thing.
What homemade feed can I give to quail that's also high in protein?
+Mata Pegheata If you can grow Amaranth or Lambs quarters the seeds of those plants are high in protein. Along with meal worms you could give good supplement. But it's tough to grow all you need to produce 100% of their feed. Unless you have a feed mull and several acres dedicated to growing multiple grains.
I was thinking of raising maggots using guts from slaughtered animals, and maybe even processing them into a powder for storage during the winter. What's your thought on that?
I'm checking out the new website. Looks good. I had to zoom down to 75% to see it all on one screen. Am I missing something? Thanks.
+mr10man69 Are you viewing it on a mobile device or desktop?
Desktop.
I'm looking into that, it's showing fine on my desktop.
good.
I would buy the water-ers and feeders if you made them!
Dude it's a poultry nipple and a dollar store cereal container. Boom.
there is a mill near me I had some special made for me less than $12 per bag of food based on a formula from the University of Mississippi
I've done that, saves a TON of money. The problem comes when they have a 1-3 ton minimum to mill it so you're paying hundreds up front. But you do save lots in the long run.
Urban Aviary I only have to do 1000lb at a time
That's a big bonus, a half ton is much more manageable.
Do we have a cost adjusted start up for 2023? Thank you
Hey. I'm looking for jumbo pharaohs or jumbo meat makers. Can you find someone near Silverhill Alabama, which is between mobile and Pensacola.
? do you have to have a license are a permit to raise quail in a backyard... I love watching your show...
+Leo Huggy not where I live you don't need to. But a lot of States you do.
Leo Huggy only if you get a quail other than Coturnix because coturnix are not native to the us but others are so if you have one native to your country you will need a permit
Urban I have a question for you the turkey feed you feed them all life from day 1 until they die?
Yes sir, same stuff their entire life.
Urban Aviary thank you, I have another question the turkey feed is “turkey starter feed” ? And any information that you can share with me about bobwhite quail those that one I bring home to raise is my first time with quail thank you 🙏 any information please
Yes, turkey starter. It's baby turkey feed. I have never raised bobwhites, but if you have specific questions I'll do my best to answer them for you.
Thank you Tom Segura, I will raise quail someday
Bahaha!! You bet!
Best cheap incubator solution?
I am dutch bdw but looking for montazuma quail we dont have them a lot in the netherlands
Instead of pine shaving, can I use cut grass?
Yep, I've done it. It makes a huge stink though if you don't let it completely dry into hay.
Urban Aviary So could I use hay? Like standard hay for rabbits ect? If not could I use regular shavings for domestic animals like hamsters?
What are the cons to those substrates?
Could you give me the dimensions of your aquarium or gallon size? I'm having trouble figuring out the size I need for 6 quail.
I believe it's 50 gallons. 4 foot long, about a foot wide and 18 inches tall.
Thank you!
do you think this could be a way to start a small bussines?
There a reptile store buy my place that sells them for feed for 7$ CAD a pop was thinking of getting some for eggs for my dogs do they lay eggs on a regular?
An egg a day
How do u do if u go on vacation ? Do u let them at home with water and food ?
I pay a good neighborhood kid to come take care of them while I'm gone.
Urban Aviary thank u for ur answer :)
You bet!
Can I raise them for eggs in these setups if I have multiple
Yes you can
Can you make one of those water system you use to sell
You can make one your self
Is it better to keep bobwhite quail in pairs? (One male to one female)
I'll be honest, I don't know much about bobwhites. But from what I understand there shouldn't be a problem with a male breeding a pair of hens.
Urban Aviary ok thank you!
What is the best food to buy for quail? Where can I buy it?
hello thinking of doing quail ii live in florida anything special i should know oh i want to know what is the most quiet quail
Florida is a GREAT place for these birds! They are a tropical bird and will do very well there. Make sure they always have good access to water and shade and they will thrive! And as for the noise, they are really all the same. I am just talking about Coturnix Quail here. The hens are almost silent and the roosters aren't all that obnoxious. Well not to me anyways. Some roosters are quieter than others, just depends on the individual bird. You can watch for your quieter roosters and get rid of the rest so that you only pass on genetics of quieter roosters. They don't crow as often when their aren't many other roosters around also. I really hope you pull the trigger on this, it's definitely worth it. Hope that helps!
going to start this weekend have cage made brooder box ready and getting used incubator saturday and eggs sunday and food is proud the corner from house
ill let you know how its going
That's awesome! Email me your setup once you have it going.
can i feed quail turkey food, my local store ran out of quail food and i bought turkey feed, is that ok?
+Joan Lynch Yep, that's exactly what I feed my birds.
+Joan Lynch Just make sure it's Turkey STARTER.
Do quail need grit or oyster shell in their diets like chickens do?
It depends. If you are going to slaughter your birds at a year or less then I wouldn't worry about it. if you want egg layers for an extensive period of time then I would try to find it if you can, but it's still not absolutely necessary.
@@UrbanAviary thank you !! Look forward to watching all of your videos.
And can I use a normal lamp for the broodin lamp
You can, I prefer a ceramic heat emitting bulb though
@@UrbanAviary dude can you help me find some one who has quails near brooklyn in nyc im planing on raising some when my parents buy a house(im 14 by the way) so i was just planning ahead and i couldnt find anyone who has quails anywhere
You planning on buying live birds or starting with incubating eggs?
@@UrbanAviary i was plannig on live one i dont have enough money for an incubator
Email me at theurbanaviary@gmail.com and I'll give you the phone number for a guy in New Jersey, he's about 25 miles from you.
Urban-aviary.com doesn't come up. Urbanaviary.com comes up, but says its for sale. What is your Facebook page or group because several come up.
The website is no more. The Urban Aviary Facebook Forum is the best.
If I can get a dozen of you to tell me that you want to buy the feeder and waterer then I will get the materials ordered. At four so far, so I'm betting we'll get to that number.
Urban Aviary Did you get to your quota? I'm interested. How well do quail tolerate cold once they are feathered out? We are going into summer here in California, so it isn't an issue right now. I think I can come up with a hundred gallon tank for indoors, but I was also thinking about raising them in an atrium.
Which heat element cost less electricity?
I'm not sure about that actually. I've only used heat lamps.
heating plates like the electric hen and other brands use far less electricity and have no fire risks or overheating your birds. The birds nest under them and self regulate their body heat.
You got a MySpace??
how big a tote can you get for 50- 100 birds
Biggest one you can get, they're around 20 bucks at Walmart. 50 or so quarts I believe
Had to get the 36 in there🤣
First we need a home...
oh.
Can Hemp bedding be used?
I don't see why not. It's compostable so I wouldn't be against it at all.
Good I use it for chickens.
could you use hamster bedding?
I don't see why not
Urban Aviary ok thanks
Where abouts are you? Found out a few days ago here in Ontario we need to get a special license for quails and pheasants
Utah
Can we use sand replacing wooden shavings
I would think so.
Thanks for the reply
what wattage of light bulb 125 or 250 please
250 if you're in winter Temps, 125 if it doesn't get too cold.
Trying to find quail in San Antonio area.
=)
Do you have a page on Gab too?
I get my shavings free from a shop that builds cabinets. All hardwood shavings.
can you mix your own feed????
+Ethan Maaske It's very tough to source all the different ingredients to make it. If you were doing a very large operation running hundreds of quail then it might make sense but not for small scale. Is there something specific you want with your feed? Or maybe just wanting to be more self reliant?
Urban Aviary hey
Urban Aviary i was wondering if they could eat wheat or ground corn with vegtable scraps or sunflowers seeds if all that would be a humane diet. im not against feed just would like to feed em in the depression from the land
I imagine you can, but I'm not a nutritionist and don't pretend to be one. But I imagine that a variety of grains along with veggies and a good source of high protein would be good.
Omg, it’s wooly Willy!
Every was really helpful but 15 dollars for a water drinker is very expensive
Can you please post the link to your website? Avianaviary.com is not working
Theurbanaviary.com
Thanks a lot.
Are the Pharaoh white or dark meat
All Coturnix are the same, no breed is different from the others. They are all about as dark as a pasture raised heritage breed chicken.
Can adult quail die from getting wet
My biggest problem is can I teach my cat that used to be feral to not eat them.
wow i was so high i think the audio was a little later than he speaks :V
watching this not from the US and have no idea what a tote is?
You can find some of those waterer nipples like the one on that plastic container at rural king
NO CEDAR CEDAR FUMES ARE DEADLY TO ALL SMALL RODENTS AND ANIMALS
could sand be used instead of shavings?
Yeah you bet, I've thought of trying that and using a sifting scoop to remove the poop.
Urban Aviary I don't know if you said but what state do you live in? I might be interested in buying some eggs
Utah. I'll hopefully be shipping soon.
How to raise quail for less then $100? it cost me over $300 just to buy a proper home, feed, lighting and nesting materials for just my one quail.
