Simple 8 hour Restoration - Bullnose Plane

  • In this video I will be restoring a Stanley bullnose plane.
    Since I didn’t have much time for a bigger project I decided to take an afternoon to restore this small bullnose plane. I’m sure many people will not like the decision I made when choosing the colour. I simply wanted it to be different to every other plane. Let me know your thought in the comments. I would also appreciate if you could give me feedback on the lighting. Are the images still dark or is it some what satisfactory. Since I have very limited space to stand I’m restricted with what lights and how many lights I can use.
    Thank you for watching

    The color choice was fine besides it's what you like you're the one using it though if I was choosing I would have used a gold or brass and black for a more period look but it comes down to the one who's tool box it's in....great videos I enjoy watching

    the colour combination looks great , black and red are classic tool colours, i was expecting lime green and pink when i read the descripition. i've never tried powder coating but it looks like it leaves a really nice finish.

    Can't beat red and black power coat. The title states a Bullnose Plane. But I don't see any Bullnose profile. How does it get that name? Bullnose is either concave or convexted profiles, hence bull-nose! Thumbs Up either way...

    Yoy can give that wire brush some new life if you take some time with a few nails closely spaced in vice your Jaws and some pliers. Just pull it through so bristles are less bunched up then squeeze back into shape . Hope thats useful. The better a tpol works the less work you have to do. 👍

    • @mytinyworkshop1213
      @mytinyworkshop1213  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, my compressor is a Hyundai hy3150s. It’s served me well so far. I can run it for approximately 2mins 30 seconds at 80 psi. Once the motor kicks in again it takes approx 3 mins to refill. Refilling an empty tank takes approx 10-15 mins. The cabinet is just from eBay.

    Looks like the first time anyone ever sharpened that plane iron since the factory to me. So in that respect yours is the best hone stone that particular plane has ever seen. But yeah India stones are obsolete in this day and age. You want diamond plates.

      @@mytinyworkshop1213 I use cheap ones out of China. www.aliexpress.com/item/32617288808.html They're OK. I glue them to a backing to give them a bit more heft? Because they're thin when you get them. The last ones I glued to acrylic scraps. I also use them with this cleaner called Purple Power. I give them a spritz of that. You can get it in the auto section at Walmart. $5 a gallon. The other thing you need is a stiff plastic bristle brush. Like a nail brush. Use that to swoosh on the plates. You'll figure it out.

      @@mytinyworkshop1213 diamonds are definitely the way to go today. You want continuous plates. The grid plates are meh. 400 and 1000 grits are enough to get you by. You can work right off 1000 diamonds and a strop. I use some ceramic stones in between but they're not needed.

    I bought one of these off E bay. Still in its box, labelled in £/s/d and looked brand new .... the reason for this is that it was completely unusable. The sole was ground to an angle, one side was approx 3mm higher than the other and the finest setting of the blade saw it protrude approx 10 mm beneath the sole. A true Friday afternoon special.

    Really like the job you did on that little plane, especially the red color!! now old blind farts like me can find it faster in the tool drawer!! LOL. There are a lot more modern sharpening systems then oil stone but I like them and use them. I recommend a mix of 1 part 5W oil to 2 parts kerosene in a jar or squirt bottle.. It is just enough to lubricate but not so much oil that it retards the sharpening process.

    Nice work. I have one of these probably 60-70 years old and very well used. The original colour was black Japan, with a red and gold decal on the palm grim. Artistically it was very understated but remember that in those days carpenters were "trade" and they knew their place. The master of the house, the Laird, may have sported a significant flash of red on his Purdue pheasant hunting piece or on his Argyle waistcoat. He would have paid about 15 pence

      @@mytinyworkshop1213 When I started woodworking, I used the sandpaper on a granite stone to sharpen. Then Paul Sellers recommended DMT plates. After purchasing these, my planes and chisels went to a new level of sharp. The DMT 'stones' use either water or glass cleaner. You can buy lapping fluid but it is not necessary. After sharpening, maintaining the edges with a leather strop is all I need. I have had them for years now and the do everything I need. Good luck.
