I too am one of those oddballs who still buys music, films, and books in physical formats. I'm of that age that my music collection started with CDs, and I do remember the first one I ever owned. It was a recording of Tchaikovsky's ballet suites with the Berlin Philharmonic and Mstislav Rostropovich I received as a gift for Christmas. I still have, love, and listen to it. But I must admit that CD is probably my least favourite of all the formats I collect, although in numbers my CD collection is easily the second largest. Vinyl has been my main focus for years and makes up the bulk of my collection, and I also collect cassettes and minidiscs. The minidisc collection is rather small compared to the others, for obvious reasons. I wish they had become more popular because I do quite like the format. Also, I must say cassettes are underrated. Everyone thinks they sound bad but I think that must have to do with the sort of cassette players most people had. They can sound great when played on good equipment! PS: If you feed your discogs list to an AI it can probably tell you exactly how many CDs and vinyls respectively are on there.
Hey Jim! Stopped buying albums when cds came out. Eventually albums pretty much disappeared. I still buy cds today. Now that albums have made a return, the prices are ridiculous! Keep rocking Jim!💿📀🎵🎼🎶👍😎
Thanks for giving some love to Hiromi. I thought I was the only one who listened to her music. I've seen her live a few times through the years. I own 8 of her CDs. They're all fantastic.
YES JIM!!! OZRICS! They're a top 3 band of mine and I practically jolted out of my seat with a far-too-loud whoop when you showed the Pungent Effulgent CD. Agreed, they are BRILLIANT instrumental and creative music and I have 9 of their albums in my collection, including Pungent ofc, Erpland, Strangeitude, Jurassic Shift, Arborescence, Curious Corn, Waterfall Cities, and a couple of the newer records as well. CD's as a format has always taken the edge over vinyl for me personally, since I started listening and collecting 4 years ago (though I have inherited many prog records from my mother, I'm a lucky lad). I think I might have approximately 3000 CD's in my possession so far, and truthfully it's a bit hard to find space for them all, especially as I'm turning 20 this February. Thank you so much for the show and tell and the much needed mood lifting Ozric surprise at the end, I hope your viewers also get to experience the joy of Ed Wynne and co.
3000 at the age of 19 😮 congrats ... I might have 3000 at the age of 90 🤣 seems like your mother is/was a big collector. I wonder what's the oldest CDs in your collection. I was "educated" by my older brother by listening to Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath. He and his friends also listened to Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, Jethro Tull, which was not my music as teenager, but nowadays I love it. My first self discovered prog band was Eloy. Do you prefer listening by yourself, with friends or do you also go to concerts ?
Hi Jim, The moment the cd became affordable for me as a teenager in the seventies, I switched completely to cd’s. And I bought a cd player then, a Philips as far as I can remember. Cd’s are much less vulnerable, better dynamics, no more scratches and dust hearable. You’ve got much more cd’s and about 20 times more records. Me and my friends taped all cd’s we bought from each other. We ripped them digitally when that became possible. And I loaned cd’s from the library for that reason. So most of my collection is digital because I also ripped my own cd’s. They live in the iTunes match cloud and on a NAS drive. In all, I have about 2900 albums.
'My mum bought me my first CD player' - you make me feel old, Jim. I bought my own sometime in the late eighties along with Marillion's B Sides Themselves which was not available on vinyl as far as I remember. Easiest way to get Grendel if you missed it on the 12" single originally. I largely buy CDs these days as vinyl costs too much and is a pain to turn over half way through. The better sound depends on the recording in question but vinyl is a much nicer artefact. Good stash of Iron Maiden CDs but I can beat you with 56 Peter Hammill recordings - 18 on vinyl and 35 on CD (plus 3 official cassettes) That's the one early Ozric's CD that I don't have but I have heard it before and have seen them live twice so well aware of their oeuvre. As you say, very much idiosyncratic space rock.
I don't remember when I bought my first cd player, probably around the time when they became affordable, something around the $300 mark. My vinyl collection is still in Germany with friends. While the most important vinyls are with my friends, I sold a large portion of them when I moved to the US (believe me, it was very hard and I regret it). I only have about 75 at the moment. My CD collection is around 800 and all of them are ripped and available on my NAS for streaming. However, I recently started listening to the actual CDs again. I love some of my King Crimson box sets, reading some history while listening. Since SW started working with artists on 5.1 audio blue rays, I have started purchasing blue rays instead, when available. The best sounding disc for me is by Material "Seven Souls". Another great sounding CD is "Third Power" by Material. I often used it to test out speakers when ready to buy new ones in the store. The dynamics range with Laswell's bass was perfect for getting what I wanted.
I have no clue when I purchased my first cd player. I have about 700 cd's which are mostly rock but also about 50 classical. I still purchase cd's and some vinyl. My newest cd's were Christmas presents - Black Country Communion - V, Myles Kennedy - The Art of Letting Go and Beth Hart - You Still Got Me. My most numerous collection is Joe Satriani followed closely by Joe Bonamassa. What makes you think I enjoy great guitar music?🎸. My favourite cd purchases of 2024 were Von Hertzen Brothers latest release and their earliest albums. I managed to find good secondhand copies of their first 4 albums plus Best of VHB which includes a DVD. All very heavenly😊.
I hope it's allowed to answer all 15 questions 😆 1. I bought my first CD player in 1988 ... when they became affordable 2. I remember 3 of my first CDs : Kenny G, Kansas, Robert Palmer ... starting in 1986 ... as my brother had a cd player so I could listen to them 3. Most recent purchase is Jean Luc Ponty - Life Enigma 4. I own a bit more than 1800 CDs 5. I don't have a preference, it's not like in the good old days, when you bought an LP only because it had a great cover 😉 6. As I wrote in the TOP 10 of 2024 list, my favourite is Jordan Rudess - 7. That's the hardest question, I have so many live albums on CD. Ok today it's Allman Brothers live at Filmore East, tomorrow Dream Theater, sunday Von Hertzen Brothers 8. Rush - Moving Pictures 9. Soen - Tellurian 10. Chicago - The studio albums 1969-78 / 10 piece box 11. Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt 2 - Scenes from a memory 12. I have 33 CDs of Klaus Doldinger/Klaus Doldinger's Passport, I have 32 CDs of Dream Theater (plus 7 DVDs and 1 LP) 13. I stopped buying LPs at the end of the 80s ... a few years ago I started buying LPs again, only a few, so most purchases are CDs nowadays 14. The only almost brandnew LP, that I ever sold was AC/DC's For Those About To Rock ... when AC/DC started hurting my ears 🤣 15. Little Village - self titled - a one time project of 4 older men : Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Jim Keltner, Nick Lowe ... who knows it ? 🤔🤘
My first CD player was actually the Sega CD game system. I had a huge (for my age) collection of cassettes and wasn't interested in migrating to CD's. However, after wearing out two copies of Judas Priest Painkiller on cassette, I made it my first music CD purchase. 😁
The very first cd I brought was a kind of magic from Queen in 1985 and cd player in the same year and the most recent cd i got is the limited edition of erasure chorus, and I've over 500 plus cds
First player - hifi system from Makro and a rock compilation cd. Last cd was Frost live. 200 cds but I purge regularly. Upwards of 600 over time. Accept whatever cd case it comes in. Forget the other categories. 😊
Interesting "game" but my memory is too patchy these days to say when or what CD. I do know the last vinyl I bought was the Mr Fingers "Amnesia" album round about 1991 ? Not bought vinyl since. CDs - I have probably about 600, including about a couple of hundred from Japan. As for best - I dunno. Box set - maybe the cheap 5 Psychedelic Furs albums in a box. Most CDs ? Possibly Band-Maid as that includes singles, bonus CDS, EPs as well as full length albums.I don't so much collect CDs as not throw them away. I'm hoping to sell all my vinyl (mix of albums and 7" + 12" singles) this year as I want to downsize. Jewel cases let you see the spines so they tend to be the ones I play. The digipak CDS I don't see on the shelf. Best purchase of 2024 - difficult but PaleNe0's Octave mini and Score full-length album are def near the top of the list. KOIAI's "Come See Me" prob top mini-album of 2024.
