When I got back into riding, I had certain specs for a bike. I’m too old with bad knees so only a street model will do. Also needed to be 500 lbs or lighter. Needed cast wheels with tubeless tires, Fuel Injection and a windshield and have room for storage. Ended up with a Suzuki Burgman 400 scooter.

After riding for 40+ years and owning a bunch of bikes over those years, if I could only have one bike now, it would be my '23 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone Special Edition. Air-cooled, shaft drive, 2 valves per cylinder, easy to maneuver, great on gas, comfortable, etc. I don't go off-road or on long rides, just mainly short rides around town and to/from work, and the Guzzi checks all the boxes.

Yamaha Xmax 300. I bought it because I can only have one bike. It does it all: around town its light and nimble with plenty of storage, handles great in the twisties and has enough power to be fun, it does highway speeds all day long no problem and has plenty of storage for long haul trips, gets 80-90 mpg, it's comfortable and easy to ride for my old broke down body.

I have 11 motorcycles so, choosing one would be a hypothetical question I wouldn't think much about. If I stay living where I am, I'd choose the one I ride most, Honda CB250 Nighthawk or what I'm working on, 1971 Honda CL175 with the engine from a Honda 250 Rebel. I'm 70 years old and often say I started on a Honda Cub and if I get so old I can't ride a Cub, I'm ready to take the dirt nap. OTOH, if I move to Ecuador, I'd be looking at Itchy Boots riding and would most likely get a Loncin 300 Rally, a Voge 300 Rally with a carburetor and better colors, also cheaper. I think a whole lot depends on how much you ride. I ride a lot but, old guys I know that have the one big bike are 300 miles a year riders. They just like to look at it and fantasize about riding.

So I thought I bought that "1" bike when I bought my FZ10 new in 2017. Bit of touring, bit of track days, bit of commuting to work... Now after decat and reflash etc, I find that I can't behave on the thing and I'm riding wheelies everywhere... Not so much high speed stuff but ripping around in little bursts like it's a supermoto. This bike is so easy to ride.... Wheelie machine and a blast to throw around... also about 170hp at this point. Well now I'm looking for something that isn't going to tempt me to ride like this. Something relaxed to ride on longer trips. I have decided on a new Goldwing bagger DCT. Will be hopefully finding one marked down end of season. Calm my ass down with both wheels on the ground.

I’ve had a dilemma with the “if only one bike” scenario. My wife likes to ride with me from time to time. I love my Road King for that 2 up ability, but would go smaller (and cheaper) if I were solo. Having to accommodate a passenger comfortably really limits your choices. I used to have lots of sportier bikes along with my Harley’s but can’t justify it now. One of my favorites was my Honda Interceptor.

Funny, I was thinking about this today.
As a vlogger from down under pointed out, adventure bikes are getting too big and heavy for the adventure. I've looked at the Tenere and the seat is too high for my taste.
I'm not an off road or a sport rider.
I have a 900 Vulcan and it's a pretty decent ride with a low seat. Changing the pulleys to gear it up made it better for highways.
My CTX1300 is a bit top heavy compared to most, but handles great at low speeds and has a good lean angle for the twisties. Better than my Vulcan. But the CTX will eventually get to be more than I want to handle.
The VTX1300 is more of what would fit for me. Cruising the back roads and the little dirt side roads for stealth camping. I'm curious to find out if it's the same engine used in the Stateline, Interstate and the Fury. If it is, I'd be good for some time for parts. I understand some are carbureted and some are injected, but it could be swappable with a little work.
The 750 Shadow is a little too small for my needs.
Can you tell I'm kinda stuck on Honda?
Oh, I would choose a Victory Gunner but I'm not sure about parts availability.

Since me and most of my crew are predominately off-road riders... If I was tortured by being limited to only one bike, I'd have to give up road riding & touring to have a pure enduro machine, A KTM 300XC-w ....
I experimented with my current DRz400 but I didn't dig the whole "dual-sport" thing. So I've "enduro-ized" the DRz and its amazingly capable set up as I have it, but I can't wait to get on a pure enduro for my off-road riding.

But, being a old rider I also love a bagger. They give such a more forgiving ride on some of the pot hole roads I ride upon lol! I guess if it came down to it, I'd go with the bagger and just ride off into the sunset. The bike I own at that time. My motorcycle is my year round primary transportation and, over time, I've found no motorcycle is perfect. I prefer something that is a do most things good standard.
Currently I own a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 for the reason mentioned above and the fact I can do all the maintenance on my own without much technical skill or special tool. Being my daily, I can't wait a month or two for a shop to schedule in repairs and with the miles ridden, shop fees can add up fast. Before the RE, I had a DR650 that I got rear-ended on and a FZ6 that I bought new in 2007. The FZ6 was great, but I got tired of riding a high strung bike in suburban and city traffic most of the time.
Ideally I like having a 150cc ish scooter as backup transportation while my main bike is down for repair since I don't own a car (my wife has the car for worse case scenarios). Scooters are fun and convenient if your ego doesn't get in the way 😂.

You need a bike that comes closest to doing it all. No unicorn bikes but there are ones that come close.
    I have 2, a kawasaki z 900rs and a vstrom 800de.
I lean towards a middle weight adv bike, lighter than 500 lbs, Japanese made and can maintain 75mph on the highway and can do light off road work
The infrastructure and roads aren't getting better and the main reason I got an adv is soon our highways will be like gravel roads and you'll need a 4wd or adv of some type to navigate.
All this said, in a shtf situation, a bicycle is your best bet. Get a bicycle.....

If I can only have one, easy, a motorcycle that gives you the most for the $$$, ADV bike.
CC size depends, 450 to 750.
Cheaper insurance, better fuel mileage, and lighter weight.

All good choices except for the wife's 😂. I like the Xmax 300 and was looking at it when I got the Royal Enfield Interceptor. I wasn't quite ready to have a scooter over a motorcycle as my primary ride.

    • @Jonathan-L
      @Jonathan-L 3 місяці тому

@@davidklementis5913 Back in 2020 I almost bought a good used Xmax 300. I took it for a test ride and the wind buffeting was really terrible, however that could have been fixed with a much smaller screen. At the time I had a Honda NSC110 Dio, which was quite practical, despite the small engine. The price on the used Xmax 300 was right though. But the Xmax 300 new price in 2024 is quite high now. For city use, the Nmax 155 is probably quite practical, but I live in a big city so a bigger bike is essential and occasionally I'll do a few country trips every year. Currently I ride a H-D Softail Slim (103) with about 30 litres of storage capacity, so whilst not a perfect bike, I can almost say it's "only if I can have one motorcycle" machine. If I was buying a new bike on a small budget, the Royal Enfield Shotgun would tick a lot of boxes for me, but I'd upgrade it with an RSTech belt drive kit (not cheap, but it 'completes' the bike). I'd be interested to see if Royal Enfield are going to bring out a 'Classic 650' or a 'Bullet 650'. I've heard rumours, but nothing confirmed yet, so it's just a bit of speculation. By the way David, here's a link to the belt drive kit for your bike: rstech.my-online.store/browse/catwcE2b_867743.aspx
