ROOF RACK LOAD RATING - [ Before You Load Your Roof - WATCH THIS ]

- Roof rack load rating. Do you know what that means, and do you know what your vehicle roof load rating is?
Before you load up roof rack on your 4WD. Check out this video on roof rack load rating.
It's very important that you don't exceed your roof rack load rating.
These are two very important load ratings that you need to be aware of.
So you can load up your roof rack safely when you head away on holidays.
Once you know what both of your load ratings are, you must work on the lowest load rating that being your roof rack load rating or the load rating of your vehicle roof.
So, that you don't exceed either of these two load ratings, you need to know what each item weighs before you load it up on your roof rack and vehicle roof.
Roof rack load ratings will vary from one manufacturer to another, and the roof load ratings will also vary from one vehicle to another.
So that you take full advantage of your roof rack load rating, spread your camping gear out evenly across your roof rack, that will also help with the roof load rating of your vehicle.
Tyler Thompson just 20 minutes ago released the same video. I never knew this info. So important to understand before loading your roof rack aye 👍
Thats bizarre hey , neither would have known each other was doing it either
Ahh righto.
It's a very important topic.
Cheers Tim.
Hahah
No, had no idea Tyler was doing one on the same topic.
Cheers Tim.
weird how you are searching different channels - is it the bloke thing you know playing with the remote kinda thing? LOLLZZZZ
@@mikeykeyes I never searched it.
100% correct. Easier to fix the correct load to suit the specs, terrain at home rather than fixing the broken roof rack in the bush. You must have saved a lot of potential accidents just by this one video. Thanks again
Gday mate,
Yeah spot on. Better getting it sorted before you leave home, rather than dealing with a damaged roof rack out in the bush due to over loaded.
I hope it helps a few out mate, and people think more about the two load limits.
Thanks for your reply and feedback.
Cheers Tim.
Gr8 topic Batesy, well explained.
When following some cowboys, I shudder at the total loads on roof racks and the way there tied down.
A video on how to load and tie down equipment on the roof rack would be a welcoming video, for people to see how the pros do it.
G'day Shayne,
Yeah it's unreal the loaded roof racks you see going down the road. Way over loaded from load ratings.
I'll look into a loading video.
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers Tim.
Tim, another fantastic topic that hardly anyone ever thinks of.
Thanks mate.
It sure is a topic that more people need take into account before they load there roofrack.
Thanks for your reply mate.
Cheers Tim.
Great to see Tyler Thompson, Ronny Dahl and yourself getting these important messages out! - well done guys. I learnt that my Pioneer rack - rated for 100kgs can only carry a a measily 32kgs for off road use when I factor in my 4WD's roof load limit and use Rhino's off road formula...time to change my rack.
Gday mate,
Yeah it’s amazing timing how these videos came out at pretty much the same time.
I’m just glad I have a Wedge Tail roofrack. Off road and on road load ratings are the same.
Thanks mate for your reply.
Cheers Tim.
I'm on their website now - thanks Tim! - always enjoy your videos of the Hgh Country / Camp oven tips - unfortunately between the fires and covid/border closures have yet to get down south - Jan '22 hopefully.
Thank you Tim for mentioning the Dynamic Roof Load Rating for Off Road conditions! It is not often talked about but I believe can be a much as a 30% reduction and needs to be discussed a lot more often!
Gday,
Yeah the load ratings of Roofracks is often forgotten going by the way I see a lot of Roofracks loaded when people go away on a trip.
Thanks for your feedback.
Cheers Tim.
very important info for everyone, good on ya Tim, cheers.....
Thanks mate.
Im glad you found the info in the video helpful.
Cheers Tim.
Thank God I have a GU Patrol just like yours so I know what my roof load rating is now. I have a simple rule for the roof. Anything that's long goes on top i.e, swag for individual trips, 6 person tent, camp chairs, mattresses and chainsaw. So I'm looking at max 60-70 on top for a family trip and 25-30 kilos for an individual trip. I've always crammed the back of the vehicle with stuff but never on top. Great video Tim, now I definitely know I'm not overloading my roof.
G'day mate,
Top stuff this video has helped you out. Handy for you having a GU, you dont have to go looking for your roof load rating. Lol
Thanks mate for your reply and feedback.

Great episode mate, it’s so important most of the racks i see would be overloaded for sure. Especially by the time you put a rooftop tent on, even sleeping up in it with your partner you’d be over for sure.
Cheers Marty
G'day Marty,
Yeah by the time a roof top tent goes on, doesn't leave much roof for extra items before you really push load ratings.
While the car isn't moving, there's a different rating again, which is high while the car is stationary.
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers Tim.
Very informative. Thanks Tim. Legend.
Gday Roy,
It’s a very hot topic mate.
Both load ratings are very important.
Thanks a lot for your reply.

Something I’ve not thought about
Excellent video Tim thanks 👍
G'day Bruce,
Thats great mate if you found this video helpful.

G'day Tim, love your vids.
You're right, the rack manufacturers generally have an off-road rating which is the stated capacity divided by 1.5
Gday mate,
They do. But Tradesman Roofracks have the same rating of 150kgs for on and off road.
I have a couple of videos where I talk about roof load ratings and roof rack load ratings.
Maybe check that one out as well.
Thanks for your feedback.
Cheers Tim
Alot of people dont even think about the roof load rating. Very good info as always mate. Great video. 👍🇦🇺🍺
Thats right mate. Both load ratings are very important to know.
Thanks mate for your reply and feedback.

most people don't even care about anything that is the sad story
@@mikeykeyes hopefully they will look into it now.
Cheers Tim.
Tim, a great topic to discuss. The dynamic load rating (not the static) is the actual load rating that should always be used. For offroad use, you need to divide the static load by 1.5. In your case the car roof's rating of 150kg is only 100kg actual (dynamic) load that should be carried. Even if the dynamic load of your rack stays at 150kg, the lowest rating applies, just as you said.
Roof rack loads are often exceeded on many 4x4s you see on the road. They put a spare wheel, a couple of jerry cans and a big storage box filled to the brim, along with a 35kg batwing awning, shovel and maxx trax and they are pushing 100kg or more. Its a bit like all those utes out there towing 3500kg vans - they are usually over the GVM but don't know it.
G'day Garry,
Yeah the whole weight thing from roofracks to GVM of a vehicle.
Big and important numbers that people need to be aware of.
Thanks mate for your reply and feedback. Greatly appreciate it.
Cheers Tim.
I see so many roof racks overloaded every day, some people have just no idea how dangerous it is.
Yeah spot on mate.
I see them as well. Not great at all.
Cheers Tim.
Some manufacturers will stipulate an offroad and onroad load limit. Do your research people, good video Tim
Gday Adrian,
Yeah it’s research that people really need to do.
Thanks for your feedback.

😀 Just got to do your sums 👍. And as always the environment/terrain of travel - speed!!!!
Yep, pays to know how much weight is going up top.

Such a great topic Batesy, most people don't even think about it. I'll never forget travelling around AUS, I was up near Townsville & saw a Hyundai Getz with a Roof Top Tent hahahahahahha.

Really important information ... thanks Tim. Centre of gravity must cause a lot of problems too with so many people loading their roof racks. I'm now trying to find the load rating of my FJ cruiser roof... no luck !!! It's not in the manual and can't find it on Google. Do you know of any links that have this information...?
G'day Glenn,
Yeah it's very important how a roof gets loaded.
Maybe call Toyota direct and see if they can help you out with the roof load rating of your FJ.
All vehicles will have one. Just a matter of finding it.
Thanks mate for your reply.

Another great video Tim you see so many people with the roof racks way overloaded I know when I went up to the Northern Territory there’s a 200 seriesI Which would’ve been 500 kg overweight just on the roof rack They had everything including the kitchen sink cheers mate
G'day Darren,
Yeah mate, way too many people load up roof racks over limits. Not safe at all.

I was watching a utube video yesterday on this same topic from another utube creator (Tyler Thompson) in NSW as his roof rack came off while driving on Fraser Island, very informative both u guys 👍👍👍👍 definitely c roof racks loaded up driving around
G'day Louis,
Strange timing how both videos were loaded at the same time.
It's an important topic and i hope some people might now look at how much weight they are putting up on their roof.
Thanks for your reply mate.

Great stuff Tim as always. How are your finding the Wedgetail rack mate. Looking to change my steel ARB rack to something a bit less weighty.
G'day mate,
The new rack is great. Big change for me from a full mesh rack.
I like the look of it, and it works well for all the gear i carry when i go on a trip.
Have a chat with Josh at Bayswater if you are wanting to know more about the Wedge Tail.
Thanks for your reply mate.

Great information Tim, you really do have to rate the Tradesman Wedgetail. I've had the Wedgetail on my 150 Prado since October 2019,, best roof rack I've owned.
Thanks mate.
Yeah the Wedgetail is a top quality roof rack.
All Aussie made.
That’s great you have one and you’re happy with it.

@@timbates4wdadventures I shared your video on our Dirt Road 4x4 Facebook and associated pages as this information is extremely relevant recently. I actually have the original Wedgetail Prototype, perfect Aussie made gear :)
@@DirtRoad4x4 Thanks mate. It sure is a hot topic at the moment.
Great all Aussie made gear by the boys at Tradesman Roof racks.
Great video Batesy my rack comes in at nearly 50 kgs and is rated to 500kg however my roof is only rated to 100 kgs I only ever put Fire wood on it to bring it back to Camp usually from up on some ridge. But while traveling long distance I would never put more up there than a solar panel and a couple of swags. You need to keep a low centre of gravity when we hit the tracks . As you know, but it really surprises me what you see some people trying to carry up there. Not to mention wind dynamics and drag. Probably why I'm constantly passing all of them .
Cheers Bruce
G'day Bruce,
Thanks mate.
Thats great you have done a few simple sums to know what you are carrying on your roof.
A lot of people carry way too much for the load limits of the roof and rack.
Thanks for your reply and feedback mate.
Cheers Tim.
Once again great video Tim, I bought a ARB Aluminum roof rack full length. I have much less weight up the top and don't have to worry about rust issues later down the track. Now i do use it much apart from the shovel and high lift jack holder or a spare tyre or 2 but that's about all i would put up their.
Gday Adam,
Alloy Roofracks are the go for cutting down initial weight before you start loading up.
That’s good you have a good idea about what you load on your roof rack and roughly what it all weighs.
Thanks mate for your reply and feedback.
Cheers Tim
Much lower on mine, about 70kg from memory so not a lot left after the rack, awning and shovel as well as respective attachments.
Not worried and knew beforehand as I don't like having much stuff on top.
Ended up going with the Front Runner boxes as I couldn't get the others to fit.
These look like they were made for the vehicle, off to get another 4 soon.
Thanks for the video and a good idea as a lot of people wouldn't know this stuff I imagine.
G'day mate,
Yeah the boxes are a good idea for sure.

Great info Tim. I did know that roofs and racks had ratings but I've seen some very overweight roofs on the tracks this video might open some eyes to that info.
G'day Dave,
I hope it does mate.
Far too many people have over loaded roof racks on a trip.
Thanks mate for your reply and feedback.
Cheers Tim.
Another good video.
This is why I don't like roof top tents and never understood why people put so much on the roof. You only put light weight stuff up there.
And if you are putting alot of weight up there reconsider it as you notice it once you go off road.
G'day mate,
Same here. A rooftop tent is one item i will never own.

Bloody interesting subject this one Batesy. FYI the Tradesman roof rack (basket) with ground mesh is 150 capacity and my Pajero 3.2 turbo diesel is 100KG i believe, as you say, not a great amount of weight considering the gear we pack.

You would be governed by the roof load limit like i am on my Patrol.

This too, overloaded can void your insurance. Be aware. 👍
Absolutely it can.
It's a big issue if you have to much weight on the roof rack.
Thanks for your reply.

Good video Timbo, Ive got an ARB roof rack with a load capacity of 120kg's on my Ranger I very rarely go any where near it.
Some people need reminding that their roof rack & what they both have attached to it as well as loaded on it adds to & effects their overall GVM.
I've actually had people try to tell me that ot is not counted....like seriously 😟
G’day mate,
Yeah I hope this video really gets people thinking about both of the discussed load ratings.
Roof load ratings then flow onto overall GVM ratings.
It’s on going.

The 150kg load rating you mentioned here, I'm guessing is the dynamic load rating? If so, what is your static load rating? Is there an easy formula or does that vary from vehicle to vehicle?
G'day mate,
Yes thats right.
Not sure what the static load rating is, but it;'s generally higher than the roof load rating i talk about while the car is moving.
Thanks for your reply mate.
Cheers Tim.
Very Interesting - some great points to consider . . . - 🤔with a roof top tent, what if the occupants themselves exceed the roof limit?? 😮 nvm . . (I'll personally never get one) . . . 😊
When the car isn’t moving, there’s another weight again. It’s generally higher than the weight ratings I talk about.
I cover while the car is moving.
Hope that helps.
Cheers Tim.
Concerned that your manufacturer states the same for static and dynamic ratings. Not feasible that they are the same??? Most responsible rack manufacturers suggest at least a 20% lowering for off road use (Dynamic) and the same is true for for the vehicle roof ratings. You also need to look at mounting points and load distribution. Vehicle manufacturers have in their wisdom allowed various options on attachment. (there is alas no standard that I know of). Some have fixed OE points along the roof line some have none, some rely on roof gutter mounting (the best option in my opinion). You also need to consider the altered center of gravity in relation to handling and roll over risk.
G'day John,
Thats how they rate there roof racks with the same on road and off road.
A few companies offer the same.
Thanks heaps for your feedback mate.
Cheers Tim.
Yeah 150kgs is actually the dynamic/off road raiting. Far better than confusing customers with derating calculations and different load ratings for the same rack.
I have the Tradesman mesh floor rack on my Cruiser and it's rated at the same 150kgs dynamic. But I have had static loads of 200+kgs many times without damage. I'm not recommending anyone do this but it does show me how sturdy these racks really are.
@@SteveBurns80 that’s right mate. I didn’t get into Static ratings while the car is stationary.
It’s more about the dangers of over loading while the car is moving.
You have a top notch rack mate.
Thanks for your reply mate.

How do the weight limits for roof top tents work? 50kg for the tent and say 200kg for 2 people sleeping in it overnight. Doesn't the weight of the people count?
Static vs dynamic
Check the owners manual of your car. The static load ratings are significantly higher than the dynamic or driving load rating.
