    Used to work in a bicycle shop and I had a few customers that were overweight and wanted to be healthy. They came for a $100.00 bicycle and after showing and explaining them what we sell and how these bikes were better than department store bikes I saw these people transforming their body and soul everytime they visited me. Literally a transformation that brought them joy and health. That made me feel happy because in a way, I felt I helped them. Cycling is the best sport...

      I have not lost weight; and sometimes people even look down on me bicycling because of age and gender --they say it is for kids and yes that hurts; but bicycling is what I do on my own and bike is what I have for this last twenty three years. I feel good on my bike; I feel less hurt when on my bike; I fall asleep faster.....
      I encourage and wish senior women or just seniors in general to bicycle outdoor to feel the breeze, because it is truly food for our body and soul....

      Thank you Dennis! I would suggest making small changes at a time to your diet at first. Your more likely to stick with them for a longer period. Get a HR monitor and stay in your fat burn zone for the first month or 2. Good Luck & let me know how you progress.

      One of the most important things is routine. Make a plan each sunday for the next week and stick to it! Even if it's just a short ride, get out on the bike more often instead of only a few longer rides. And if you are really busy biking to work is a great option if possible. If you want some great tips GCN has 3 or 4 great videos on losing weight through cycling! Cheers, and good luck

    I own both road bike and mtb. However recently I discovered that fixing a fork without suspension for my mtb give me best of both world. I get easy handling of MTB and speed (though still not totally as fast as a road bike). Note that I don't do trails with mtb, just urban casual riding, 80 percent on pavement and 20 percent on road.

    I could not agree more with you. In 2000, living in Dallas, I purchased an inexpensive bicycle and started riding. At first I was riding only 7 miles after work each day. As my enthusiasm for riding grew, my mileage increased until I was getting 25 miles a day. In 18 months I went from 300 pounds to 190 pounds. I moved to Chicago and became an avid rider typically doing more than 30 miles a day to and from work plus adventure rides. I'm now 66 years old, 165 pounds, and I live in Ecuador. I only ride between 10 and 20 miles a day now but I live in a village 8300 feet above sea level and ride uphill from here into the mountains. Bicycle riding took me from being a sedentary person to being an active, alive, adventurous person. I love my bike riding life!

      Al, Your story gives my hope. I'm 58, just started riding at the beginning of COVID 19 (about 2 months ago) no gyms are open. I weight 210 lbs trying to get to 175 lbs. Today I road 40 miles in 3.5 hours. I know it is slow but it was fun and I just kept going. I lived in Naples Italy some years back and road a little while there, but after returning to the states I stop. . What made you move to Ecuador. It sounds exciting. I'm thinking about New Zealand don't ask why? I guess I'm just sick of all the whining here in NC.

    • @bimapringgo
      @bimapringgo 7 років тому +13

      19 miles might be a little too far to commute daily by bicycle, at least for me. Give it a try first on your day off just to see whether it's a reasonable distance for you. Then start commuting by bike one day a week to see how it goes.

    • @ScoutJoe
      @ScoutJoe 7 років тому +3

      I second that, first you have to know if you can handle that distance before you go off cycling to work but I recommend you to practice first as @bimapringgo said don't force yourself if you can't do it. It will take sometime for your body to adjust so take it easy try 1-2km first then add more distance if you are used to it. again ride safely :)

    I'm glad I came across this video. I've been cycling for over 30 years. Three years ago, I had both my hips replaced because of arthritis. Last year, July 4, 2017, was my first month back in the saddle. I actually found it to be beneficial for range of motion improvement. It also strengthened my legs. It's almost a year later and I'm already up to 300 miles per month, weather premitting. I strongly encourage cycling, not only for physical health, but mental and social health as well. I'm 57 years old and I approve this video. See you all on the road someday.

      I'm 58 and just started during COVID 19 (about 2 month ago.) What do you mean when you say "weather permitting" I rode one day last week it was 58 but sunny and thought I would freeze. today it was 78 degrees and it felt great. I want / need to keep at it because I' trying to lose weight. I'm 210 and trying to get to 175, running is out of the equation. I'm in N.C. so the weather changes a lot. So if you could help me out on the weather permitting would be great. I now what works for you might not work for me and that I need time to adjust. I'm just trying to get some ideas and see if I need to invest in better gear.

      What I meant by 'weather permitting' is this, I have arthritis and it's painful when I ride during cold weather. Even if I wear layers of clothing, the pain is still there. Rides like that are very short, not even a mile. 🤔 Stil working on that.

    Agreed wholeheartedly - 1 year ago I was 225 lbs and had knee issues from a baseball injury I sustained in my teens, so every time I tried to take up running my knee would balloon up and I had to stop for a week. I switched to a vegetarian diet and took up bicycling as a low impact way to turn my commutes into a workout. After a few months I got a proper road bike and took up cycling as a hobby. Today I'm 165, and my resting heart rate has dropped from 85 to 60. I'm in the best health of my life thanks to cycling.

      But don't ride the sidewalks, okay? The road actually _is_ safer if you use the bike for commute. I used to ride the sidewalks. I wrecked sooo much. I once even fell into a righthand turn lane, (the road, basically). Riding the sidewalks is also really unsafe for pedestrians. Sidewalks are too narrow, curve too suddenly, are still very closeto the road, etc., etc., etc. Bike laws exist for a reason.

So when we got back from home we just happened to stopped by Marshall to because TJ Maxx forgot to take the magnet thingy. To our surprised a bike that I been saving for 3 years went on sale for $140...it was originally $500+ it was already assembled and everything. Bought it in a heartbeat. Hahahaha. I ride it today for 1 hrs and 36 min for 10 miles. Yea I fell because I forgot how hybrid mountain bikes works. But it was fun.

      @@charliedee9276 Probably the decision of not having a driver's license anymore saved your life down the line. If not the life of many more around you.
      In comparison, I am approaching my 30's and I've never been interested into cars and getting a driver's license. I might get one once I will get married. Until then......
      But I've been a vivid bike raider since I was 17. I got myself a mountain bike, 2 city bikes, 2 road bikes and one fat bike.
      From my very first job to the current job I always used my bikes to move.
      During winter season when there's snow, sleet on the road I always ride my fat bike until the ice season ends. Never had issues doing so. The ride is slow but very stable.
      During rains I go for my city bikes.
      During sunny, dry days I go for my road bikes.
      And mountain bike is for off-road fun. 5km away from my home there's a big forrest. That's where I release my adrenaline.

      Eric, just skip the car for transportation if you can reach your destination within 45 minutes relaxed biking. You"ll save fuell, lose weight and gain health, and got 90 minutes fresh air as a free bonus. So simple and so effective it can be.This is how many people in the Netherlands are doing it, even our president and our queen. Don't make it difficult for yourself and use a bike where you can sit on in a nice comfortable upright position. Also don't bike too fast, no need for sweating. If you bike on this way it can get a normal every day thing. People are made to be active, you won't feel tired but instead you feel full of energy after the trip.

    My greatest achievement with a bike was in 2016. I cycled around Lake Balaton with my friend. It was a 220 km journey under 12 hours. I was super happy, was playing football and basketball besides cycling plus I was lifting weights. But unfortunately I drifted off the biking road to bodybuilding and then came a knee injury in November 2017. Doctors in my country dont care about "smaller" injuries like patellar tendonitis. I was crying like hell when I heard: "You need to learn living with it." I couldnt accept it. I fell into a depressive mood lasting for months. Sport was my life. I was smoking cigarettes, drinking every weekend under the name of "enjoying life"... i had attempts of getting out of this hell hole but I always found myself back again... Everytime I did something I had to stop because the pain in my knee. but in this month Ive decided that Im gonna get out of this. I started cycling again, which keeps my knee pain free👐❤ cycling 20-30 kms everyday slowly increasing the volume. and I have a goal set to August... Cycling Lake Balaton around in one day again. The main reason that cycling is great for weight loss is that it maximally exploits the uniquely human evaporative air cooling system (We are designed for endurance performance). That is, the harder you work, the faster the air flows around you, the faster the rate of evaporation from your skin and the more cooling you get. In other words, it is practically impossible to overheat no matter how hard you work. This means that cycling offers you the absolute fastest rate of calorie burn of any exercise bar none. This translates to the greatest weight loss for the least time investment and the least heat stress discomfort, you don't even realise your sweating till you stop. For this reason, there is no other exercise that can burn calories as fast for as long as cycling can.

    +Plant Based Analyst:1. I started biking with a $78 Walmart bike. I also see decent bikes at yard sales all the time. I've even had people offer me free bikes. 2. Not everyone enjoys cycling, because not everyone enjoys the same things. Personally, I'd rather be outside, riding TO somewhere, rather than be indoors on a treadmill staring at the wall. Cycling is one of the few exercise programs I could actually stick with. Also, people may not enjoy cycling at first, because they are unsure of themselves. Find a friend who bikes and ride with them. 3. I also work and have many, many grownup responsibilities. So that's just silly. Also, if you have kids, take them along. Biking is a very family-friendly activity. 4. Yes, winter biking can be difficult, but only because we Americans aren't used to seeing it. In Copenhagen, there are more bicyclists in that one city, than in the entire USA. In one city. A cold weather city. 5. Riding in traffic is dangerous, you are correct. You can wear proper safety gear , like a helmet, put lights on your ride, or just bike in parks, off the road where there are no cars. And I totally agree with you, you don't NEED all the bells and whistles. I had a cheap bike, remember? But you can start small and graduate to those things when you can afford them if that's what you want.

    Eat less and you'll lose weight. Exercise alone won't control weight unless you spend inordicate time exercising. For instance you'd have to ride for an hour to work off a few cookies. Better to just not eat the cookies.
    I rode 20 miles yesterday and enjoyed it, but I don't do it for weight loss.

    • @ChuckD59
      @ChuckD59 8 років тому

      +1 for you. I've lost 40 pounds in the past couple years (6'1", 268 lbs to 228ish), partially by getting off my cubicle-fattened ass and riding, but also by controlling my diet.
      It's not easy and exercise helps, especially if you find a fun activity like cycling, but it's not the whole answer. Losing weight begins in the kitchen.

    • @PrivateEyeYiYi
      @PrivateEyeYiYi 8 років тому +3

      What I meant is that the role of exercise is more to curb the appetite, and not so much to burn calories. At least that's how it works in my case.
      Let me put it this way: If I count the calories I expended exercising they'd never add up to a significant weight loss. There has to be a reduction in food intake and probably a dietary change to accomplish anything of significance. But riding a bike (or walking, swimming, or whatever) helps make this possible far more effectively than being a couch potato.

      That's why you incorporate activity into every bit of your day you can. Exercise does things dieting cannot like building muscle and raising metabolism. If being sweaty is not an issue when at work, then cycle to work. If it is, then see about cleaning up at work. Cycle to stores, the doctor (if possible), to the bank, to public events, and to restaurants.

    Cycling is bad for the Economy
    A cyclist is a disaster for the country's economy - He does not buy the car & does not take car loan - Does not buy car insurance - Does not buy Fuel - Does not send his car for servicing & repairs - Does not use paid Parking - Does not become Obese - Yes,.....and well, damn it !! Healthy people are not needed for economy. They do not buy drugs. They do not go to Hospitals & Doctors. They add nothing to country's GDP. On the contrary, every new McDonald outlet creates at least 30 jobs - 10 Cardiologists, 10 Dentists, 10 weight loss experts apart from people working in McDonald outlet. Choose wisely: A Cyclist or a McDonald ? Worth thinking. 🤔🤔😀😀
    PS. Runners are even worse. they do not even buy a bicycle.

      Take a reclining bike. They have a very large seat, so your weight is distributed, instead of focused on your butt bone. Start with a cheap used one, learn what you want different, and then buy a good one.

My bloodwork, Health, fitness, vO2 Max, post workout recovery, heart rate variability,, vital signs, endurance, all really good, best in 20 years. I have done full keto, but found my peaks during exercise were seriously blunted; fine for endurance rides where I limit high intensity during a workout. I do full keto when I can’t workout, so only a few days a month.. I can do mod intensity workouts while fasted, so I am already very well fat adapted. I don’t need to be full keto.

      @HeavymetalHylian 7 років тому +4

      pretty much. You can always get a cheapo hybrid bike from Academy instead of a road/mountain bike. The exercise is still just as good if you choose a good route. I'm getting ready to buy a $400 mountain bike after I get my tax return, which is still a lot of money, but I know it's something I love doing and I will get my money's worth out of it. The point here is that you should go for a less expensive bicycle for at least a year before upgrading to something more expensive, that way you know for sure that it is something that you are going to enjoy and use for both exercise and entertainment. The only one you don't want to cheap out on is a mountain bike - and by that I mean Walmart mountain bike because they aren't really built for rough handling and you could get hurt.

    Here in the UK during winter it's pitch black when I go to work, and pitch black after work, and usually raining, with cars flying past me at 70 mph. It's not impossible but realistically it's dangerous. No "fun filled adventures" to be had during the week that's for sure. I usually just pull my runners on after work and go blast a 40 minutes run with my favourite music. Best advice I can give is set a performance goal and work towards it. Cut out alcohol and watch what you eat. And before you say "well why dont you quit your job then", cyclists wouldn't have smooth tarmac'ed roads to cycle on without people like me who wake up in the dark and work my arse off

    I've tried both extensively and i love both running and cycling. Currently i am more into running as i just managed my first marathon and have my eye set on trailultras, but i always come back to cycling. I just took my dusty bike to a shop to get tuned and bad parts switched and im super excited. I'm fit and light now , but it was cycling that catapulted me into this level of fitness in one season i lost over 20 kilos and since then i haven't gained any for 10 years. I could never start running more seriously with that much weight on initially.
    Ofc im even leaner now obviously because of running 80 kms a week but i find a well placed bike ride to be absolutely invigorating. It's great if you wanna loose weight, great for crosstraining after a long resting running season or just recovering from a marathon or for a taper. When you get to be more advanced cardio athlete it's great to choose one of the activites as a main and use the other in moderation to break the grind!

    Why cycling is bad for lazy people:
    1. You have to wash your bike
    2. You have to lube your chain
    3. You have to pump air to your tires
    4. You have to change flat tires

    My god, I'm the gay guy, and even I don't wear that shade of red! Lol! (Sorry, couldn't resist). Cycling is THE BEST THING ON EARTH!!!!! It's saved my life more then once! I'm a 48 year old Toronto guy, been cycling since I was a kid. At 20, I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, colon cancer, depression, and many others....my colon burst, killing me for 2 minutes, when I was only 21, and since then, have had 33 brutal surgeries and have spent a good chunk of my adult life in the hospital (but I kicked cancers ass, twice!!)....how did I survive when I was suppose to die you ask? CYCLING! No words could possibly describe the hell I've been through, but as soon as I was able, I'd get back on my bike and ride until I had to have another surgery. It not only kept me in shape, but my doctor said point blank, it literally saved my life. He said most patients with my illnesses just become a couch potato, but because of my love of cycling, I healed my body 70% faster then anyone else. Even on those days I was doubled over in pain, I forced myself to ride, and always felt better after. Toronto is flat as a pancake, from here all the way to Niagara Falls (which is only about 80kms from my house). So, I'd just put the ear buds in, tune the iPod to my favourite tunes, and just ride. No matter how bad I felt, within minutes, it was just me, the wind, my music, and all the beautiful nature that our trails have, especially the lake front trails (there's a trail that runs along Lake Ontario, from Toronto to Niagara Falls, it's part of the trans Canada trail), and I was free from all my worries. I can't imagine my life without it, unless I need to go somewhere fast, I leave the car at home, and ride, keeping all my lightweight gear if I want to camp out for a few days. It's free therapy, a great way to stay in shape, and after a while, it's truly effortless, even the challenging rides become just another adventure. To make it simple, I just ensure my bikes are tuned up every few months (I have a road, hybrid, and mountain bike, all bought at Cyclepath here in Toronto, where you get 4 free tune ups a year for the life of the bike), keep extra supplies, because they really come in handy when you get a flat in the middle of farm country, or tear your shorts, p,us all medical supplies...actually, because I've now only 5% of my entire gastrointestinal tract left, I seldom need to stop, my rearranged anatomy allows me to drink gallons of water without ever having to go to the bathroom (it's a long story, but being gutless has its advantages!). So I encourage everyone, regardless of age or health, to get out there. I suppose it's not for everyone, but for me, it's my reason for living! FYI...yes, it can get expensive, but once you hook up with other cycling friends and clubs, you can find so many ways to save a fortune. I've gone through 15 bikes over the past 30 years, but I cycle a minimum of 50k/day, usually about 100 though, it's hard on some bikes...oh yeah, a word of advice, when buying a bike, don't go for cheap, it may cost a bit more, but you get what you pay for. The cheap frames tend to crack on the welds, my favourite is my current DaVinci hybrid. It's a Canadian company, but man they make a great bike, at a low price (got lucky, it's a large frame, which is my size, but was a metallic rust colour, so it didn't sell, guess I'm the only guy who loves the colour, but I picked it up for only $1500!, normal price was $3300, but since I've bought so many bikes from this place, he gave me a deal, and it's a reinforced carbon nanotube alloy, light as hell, but stronger then anything on the market). I've put about 30 000 kilometres on it, and only had to replace the things that always wear out. I've had to replace the tires and brake pads (I've never liked disc brakes, too many problems and can't handle my often aggressive rides) about a dozen times, but other then that, zero problems, what's your favourite brand(s)???
