This is my first watch of an opening of OTJ 😬😅.
You know, I don't care what anyone thinks, I like it. Just like I liked SNC. I think I like doofy themed sets. Not MKM doofy, though.

Seemed to me that the special guests are harder to hit this time...between a bundle, play box, and a CB, I only got 1 and it was from the bundle lol

They are. Apparently like one in every two or three boxes in this set. Which is still okay considering we have two other bonus sheets.

Honestly my favorite hit is that full art island in foil, not a money hit but man I want those to add to my Dino commander deck.

I’ve heard a few people comment how much they like the full art lands in this set already. Which is high praise since we get full art lands in every set now!

I think it's interesting that WOTC decided that, rather than scrapping the Big Score cards, they would avoid the packing/distribution costs of an additional supplemental set (the packs of which they could have sold at half the price of Aftermath and made folks happy). So does that mean that the net profit from a projected "more OTJ packs sold cause more mythics" was higher than the cost of distribution? Also, I'm sure these cards would have only been in set boosters prior to the change to Play. Already I've seen some unfortunate patterns in limited where the BIG cards snuff out some cool limited strats. 🤷

    • @WildcatMTG
      @WildcatMTG  6 місяців тому +1

I actually applaud the move. Aftermath was a disaster so I’m glad they had the self-awareness to course correct. It definitely makes Outlaws incredibly interesting to have these cards in place of a “List” for the set. There had to be some pretty tough internal conversations about whether or not increased sales on Outlaws and positive PR could outweigh lost revenue of another micro set that would have also had its own collector boxes.
Interestingly it didn’t stop them from producing an Assassin’s Creed micro set so we’ll see what happens there…
Limited is definitely FULL of bombs. So I am curious as to how to navigate those waters when considering removal. MKM was such a fast format that I didn’t even play removal. Curve out and plays creatures as quickly as possible with a couple of good combat tricks. Creatures were so efficient and investigate so prevalent that I didn’t worry about running out of cards. Wonder if OTJ Draft will play slower to allow someone to get to bombs?

@@WildcatMTG I think the move from epilogue was a good and probably safe one.
I cracked my prerelease kit and pulled a Villainous Wealth and just built around that. Ended up with a weird Sultai Ox typal Bonnie Pall/Bruse Tarl Reanimator monstrosity. My OP pulled a Cruel Ultimatum and didn't include it because of the mana restriction. (Long story short, they should have included it because they're giving out Mana fixing like it's candy here...)

    • @TheLordRumfish

I disagree. One bad product doesn't mean they all had to fail. It's pretty easy to see The Big Score would have been a lot more successful than Aftermath was, it has a better design and is more powerful. If it came out at a cheaper price point, it wouldn't have been the same product at all.

When I heard about this set I was very dubious about it - I couldn't fit cowboys into magic in my head, but having actually seen the set, I think it's got a lot of potentially playable cards. The power creep worries me a little, it seems to be getting out of hand again, and it might need a step back in power levels, I think. I will say one thing though - those full art lands are by far my favourite of the full art lands to date....

    • @WildcatMTG

I think that Standard, Pioneer, and Modern are segmented enough now that they don’t worry as much about putting enough power into a Standard released set to trickle into Modern but then have the freedom to push Standard further knowing some of that will also makes its way into Pioneer too. I think Modern having it’s own “rotation” with Horizon sets may have taken some of the pressure off new Standard sets having to also have cards impact Modern. I feel like Green got a big boost. Would be nice to see it be relevant in Standard again.

We have had sets based around Chinese mythology, Asian asthetics, India, horror sets, sets based around literally fairytale tropes, and this one is gimmicky? Magic is an expanse of infinite planes of existence, why can’t a plane exist in the old west? Shit I mean the next set is fucking chipmunks with swords, the original story ended and they probably need to set up the next story, it would become redundant and boring if every story took place of dominaria, that plane would be like the Gotham of magic, where just every fucked up and crazy thing happens. It bugs the shit out of me when people like you complain but I guarantee you’re gonna buy the set.

@@matthewwhale4514 Woah. Hold on now, I literally said it was an incredible set. I didn't complain or rant... I literally said it wasn't "as corny and gimmicky as it appears". And it definitely presents as corny and gimmicky. And so have many other sets before it. I've been playing Magic since Ice Age was released, and I am more into the core fantasy aspect of design, and this is a far departure from that. Isn't that fair for me? Did that really infuriate you that much?
