  • Is Islam Judaism? Mind Blowing Interview With Professor Reuven Firestone
Our quest in this episode is to spell out what Islam is and how it may have developed in the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century. I found this to be my favorite episode so far in recording scholarship on Islam.

I wonder if you question your own a priori assumptions? What I have noticed about secular critics of religion is that they tend to have a set of unprovable assumptions that they hold with as much, if not more, vehemence than religious people. I think we all need to question our own a priori assumptions and unprovable commitments.

Great interview. I would like to add something that the Professor surprisingly maybe forgot to add as he has extensive knowledge, but its actually critical. It is that yes Jihad does mean struggle and he did mention its other forms such as striving for the sake of the community, but the most important Jihad for Muslims is the struggle against oneself. The struggle against your desires, destructive thoughts and habits, your 'inner demons' and so on. The struggle against taking the easy road, the struggle to be disciplined. That is the real Jihad.

And if anyone from the polytheists asks for your protection ˹O Prophet˺, grant it to them so they may hear the Word of Allah, then escort them to a place of safety, for they are a people who have no knowledge. 9:6

Usually, I would listen to my favourite science, space, earth videos, to do go to sleep, as discussions mostly annoy me, with either one or the other side, or both, being ignorant to history & facts. What a refreshing outlook on humanity, listening to two down to earth human beings, who have taken their blinkers off and try to tell people, how things really were, are, and maybe can be, if peoples start finding their similarities. This was so relaxing for my battered mind these days, that I actually could go to sleep. Nevertheless, I will do the whole session tomorrow.

I came across this on my you tube feed, as a practicing muslim I was going to give it a wide berth as I thought a couple of white dudes spitting out the usual anti muslim / orientalist / ex muslim venom, but Im so glad I did not. Derek I was taken aback by your honesty, integrity and your genuine desire to understand and build bridges, and your guest the Rabbi was highly informed and for the most part pretty accurate on how a muslim would view their faith, a sincere seeker of truth. From my own perspective Islam never claimed to be a brand new religion coming out of the Arabian desert born in a vacuum. It is a continuation of the same message given to and preached by Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus ( peace and blessings be upon them all ) as well as the prophets of old Israel. Mohammeds ( peace be upon him ) mission was to bring people back to the strict monotheisim of God as was preached and practiced by the previous prophets. I believe Islam is much closer to Judaism in terms of theology and practice than to Christianity, whilst differing from Judaism in its universal appeal as opposed to being the religion of just the chosen people, as well as a huge emphasis in the Koran on the life hereafter once we have died. With this life being a test as to who amongst us is going to strive and struggle ( this struggle is called a Jihad ) to be close to God to obey Him, to worship Him, to yearn to return back to Him, but most of all to have Him in our hearts and minds, in a nutshell thats what Muhammed ( PBUH ) came to teach us, we still have those teachings with us in the Koran. Derek you should if you and your listeners want a mainstream and modern perspective on Islam and how it sits with the other 2 Abrahamic religions invite or listen to Dr Ally Shabir, or Professor Ali Ataie, or Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. To all my fellow seekers of Truth and God, may He guide us to that Truth wherever it may lie and may He forgive us our shortcomings for they are immense, Salaam - peace

      Matthew 7:15 - 7:20
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. *Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.*
You believe in the false prophet Muhammad which:
      1. falsely claimed that the Jews worshipped Ezra the Scribe as the Son of Allah until the end days.(Quran 9:30, Sahih Muslim 1.352)
      2. falsely described Christians as believing in a Trinity made up of the Father, Jesus, and Mary. (Quran 5:116)
      3. falsely claimed that the Gospel and Torah promised that killing and being killed in the name of Allah will lead them to paradise. (Quran 9:111)
A false prophet Muhammad which command evil deeds against disbelievers of his false message.
Koran 2:191 "slay the unbelievers wherever you find them"
Koran 5:51 "Muslims must not take the infidels as friends"
Koran 5:33 "Maim and crucify the infidels if they criticize Islam"
Koran 8:12 "Terrorize and behead those who believe in scriptures other than the Koran"
Koran 8:60 " Muslims must muster all weapons to terrorize the infidels"
Koran 8:65 "The unbelievers are stupid, urge all Muslims to fight them"
Koran 9:5 "When the opportunity arises, kill the infidels wherever you find them"
Koran 9:123 "Make war on the infidels living in your neighborhood"
Koran 22:19 "Punish the unbelievers with garments of fire, hooked iron rods, boiling water, melt their skin and bellies"
Koran 47:4 "Do not hanker for peace with the infidels, behead them when you catch them".
A false prophet who promote a false paradise full of sins and corruption. Blaspheming the true God who hate Sins and Corruptions. Who, love Truth and Righteousness.
      - Muslims will gain virgins having large swelling breasts in paradise. (Quran 78:31-35)
      - Large-eyed virgins are waiting for Muslims in paradise (Quran 44:51-59)
      - Women’s virginity will be automatically restored after each encounter in paradise (Quran 56:35-36)
      - 72 virgins in paradise (Hadith 2562)
      - Men can take pleasure at a free sex market of men and women in paradise (Al-Hadis Volume 4:34)
The false prophet Muhammad is in reality the servant of Satan which encourages his followers to commit Sins.
By Him in Whose Hand is my life, if you were not to commit sin, Allah would sweep you out of existence and He would replace (you by) those people who would commit sin and seek forgiveness from Allah, and He would have pardoned them.

Jesus said His words would be passed on to His disciples. One can believe that God’s words can be found in the New Testament because they are written or by the Disciples and their companion scribe as guided by the holy spirit.
John 14:26: “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
John 16:13: “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
Peter called Paul’s writings the scriptures.
2 Peter 3:15-16: “And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.”
Early witness to the accuracy of the New Testament text comes from the prolific writings (of hundreds of thousands of quotations of Scripture) of the ante-Nicene fathers of the church. For example, seven letters have survived that were written by Ignatius (AD 70-110), and nearly every book of the Bible (except 2 John and Jude) was quoted by AD 110 by only three individuals-Ignatius, Clement of Rome, and Polycarp. In those seven letters, Ignatius quoted from 18 different books of the New Testament. Every time he cited Scripture we can observe the Greek text he was using. Consequently, the early fathers provide us with an excellent early witness to the text. For this reason, their prolific writings remain an important testimony to the New Testament.
Abundant evidence from the ante-Nicene period also confirms the early church’s belief in the deity of Jesus Christ. Around 106 AD, the Roman governor Pliny the Younger wrote a letter in which he explained that the Christians in his region sang hymns “to Christ as to a god.” That commitment to the deity of Christ is affirmed repeatedly throughout ante-Nicene literature:
Ignatius of Antioch (c. 50-117): “For our God, Jesus the Christ, was conceived by Mary according to God’s plan, both from the seed of David and of the Holy Spirit.”
Polycarp of Smyrna (69-155): “Now may the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the eternal high priest himself, the Son of God Jesus Christ, build you up in faith and truth . . ., and to us with you, and to all those under heaven who will yet believe in our Lord and God Jesus Christ and in his Father who raised him from the dead.
Epistle of Barnabas (c. 70-130): “If the Lord submitted to suffer for our souls, even though he is Lord of the whole world, to whom God said at the foundation of the world, ‘Let us make humankind according to our image and likeness,’ how is it, then, that he submitted to suffer at the hands of humans?
Justin Martyr (100-165): :And that Christ being Lord, and God the Son of God, and appearing formerly in power as Man, and Angel, and in the glory of fire as at the bush, so also was manifested at the judgment executed on Sodom, has been demonstrated fully by what has been said.”
Tatian (110-172): “We do not act as fools, O Greeks, nor utter idle tales when we announce that God was born in the form of man.”
There are many more before 325 AD that I can quote from.

This paragraph originated from 後漢書 (Houchan shu) After the Han Dynasty, and it reads like this:
"In the day of Gui Hai, the last day of the month, there was a solar eclipse(the emperor) avoided the throne room, suspended all military activities and did not handle official business for five days. And he proclaimed,‘ My poor character has caused this calamity, that the sun and the moon were veiled. I am fearful and trembling. What can I say?’...Anyone who presents a memorial is not allowed to mention the word ‘holy’."
Historians claim that the time frame of such an eclipse phenomenon that happened in the Han Dynasty is in accordance with what is described in the Bible Luke 23:44-46 :
      Luke 23:44-46:
44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

      夏4月壬午,诏曰:比阴阳错谬,日月薄食。百姓有过,在予一人,大赦天下。 光武帝7年
      As translated:
"Summer, fourth month (of the year), on the day of Ren Wu, the imperial edict reads,‘Yin and Yang have mistakenly switched, and the sun and moon were eclipsed. The sins of all the people are now on one man. Pardon is proclaimed to all under heaven."
It is interesting to note that they came to that interpretation without knowing Jesus.

45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

No *SIMILARITIES* between *Islam* and *Judaism!* It's a pity that beloved Muslims *believe in the FRAUD* that the *oneness (monotheism/Tawhid)* of their god means that he is the *SAME* monotheistic God revealed through Moses and the Prophets in Jewish scripture (Deuteronomy 6:4). Same concept of monotheism therefore same God? *No.*
Is monotheism the ONLY attribute required to test Allah of the Qur'an's 7th century claim to be the monotheistic Judeo-Christian God of Abraham, the Creator and Most High God? Satan, who also claims to be God, would easily pass this test since he is monotheistic too.
So, holding on to just one attribute is a *False Dilemma Fallacy* because it falsifies or limits the results by relying only on ONE attribute and ignoring MANY other attributes which would have helped give a more accurate result.
Allah's strange claim to be the Judeo-Christian God of the Bible goes like this:
Al-'Ankabut (QS 29:46). "...We [Muslims] believe in all that is revealed to us and in that which has been revealed to you [Jews and Christians], and our God and your God is One, and to Him we stand resigned."
*CLASH: DOES GOD ENTER CREATION OR DOES HE NOT?*
It was common knowledge to all the Prophets of Israel, as revealed in Jewish scripture, that God *enters creation* while Allah of the Qur’an-revealed in the 7th century- *does not enter creation* (Sahih Muslim 179):
The amazing Almighty is ABLE to enter our space since he is not bound by time, space and location. God is LOVE (1 John 4:8), so out of his *love* (not weakness) he chooses to dwell among the people who are the masterpiece of his creation.
For example, in the Jewish Torah, God walked in the garden of Eden (Genesis 3:8), which is not in heaven but was located on earth, serviced by the rivers Pishon, Gihon, Tigris and the Euphrates (Genesis 2).
God appeared to Abraham on earth as a man (Genesis 18:1-15).
The glory of God descended as a cloud and *entered the temple/tabernacle of Moses (Exodus 40:34) and Solomon (2 Chronicles 7:1‭-‬3) and dwelt among the Israelites.*
That is why Jews pray facing the temple in Jerusalem. When the prophets taught, *"Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is ONE* (Deuteronomy 6:4), this is the monotheistic God of Abraham they taught about, not the 7th century Allah of the Muslims who does not enter creation! You can't just cherry pick one verse from the Torah and ignore all other attributes of God mentioned in the Torah! Do you have any idea how crazy and hypocritical that is?
Finally, God DID enter creation when he *entered the temple/tabernacle that was the BODY of Jesus (Isaiah 40:3-5, Malachi 3:1 and John 2:19-21) and dwelt among mankind* (John 1:14). Jesus is the Glory of God in the flesh (John 1:1, 14)!
The Muslim will say: *"but our God does not enter creation because he is Most High and exalted above the earth".* This would prove Allah of the Kaaba to be false for claiming (QS 29:46) to be the God of the previous scriptures *(who is the Most High and does enter creation* out of his love for mankind).
Well, in this example, if something claims to be a duck, then logically it should have feathers as does a duck.
That something cannot claim to be a duck but then say _"I am a duck who does not have feathers; I have fur"._
*(This is called a false claim: it is not a duck but something else-perhaps it is a Rabbit)*
Likewise, if the 7th century Allah of the Qur’an claims to be the God of the previous scriptures (who does enter creation) then logically Allah of the Qur’an should enter creation, as does the true God of the previous scriptures.
Allah of the 7th century cannot say, _"I am the God of the previous scriptures (who enters creation), but I don't enter creation"._
*(This is called a false claim: he is not the true God of the previous scriptures but a false god)*
Muslims worship a *false god* who claims [Al-Aʻla (87:1)] to be the Most High God of the previous scriptures who does enter but this false god does not enter creation! It's deception. In truth, Judaism and Christianity are the only true Abrahamic religions of the true God of Abraham *who enters creation* and dwells with mankind. Islam is a false 7th century Abrahamic religion.
If it has feathers, walks like a Duck and quacks like a Duck, then it surely is a Duck, not a Rabbit!
If God enters creation, appears to Abraham as man and enters and fills the tabernacle/temple of Moses and Solomon, then He surely is the true God of Abraham whom the Jews and Christians believe in and NOT Allah the 7th century false god of the Qur'an.
Being the "great planner" that Allah is, he has planned to deceive beloved Muslims into believing that he is the Judeo-Christian God.
Imagine the Rabbit saying "there is no other creature but the Rabbit" yet making the claim to be *another* creature which has feathers and a quacking sound?
Such is the terrible claim in the Islamic creed in the Shahada "there's no god but Allah" yet Allah goes on to claim to be *another* God (the Judeo-Christian God of Abraham who does enter creation).
      Blessings to you!

While Allah of Islam *claims to be the monotheistic God of the previous scriptures,* he does not enter creation as did the God of the previous scriptures. Who is deceiving who? Here are *FIVE* amazing examples of God (the glory of the Lord) *ENTERING CREATION* and *dwelling among the people* in the books of the prophets of old, and the stunning prophecy from the prophets about the *glory of the Lord* appearing to mankind in the form of *JESUS!*
*1.* In the Torah, after Adam and Eve sinned, "...they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the *presence* of the Lord God among the trees of the garden". (Genesis 3:8).
*‭‭2.* In the Torah, God appeared on earth to Abraham *(Genesis 18:1-15)*
[1] 'The Lord appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. [3] He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by. [11] Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. [12] So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” [13] Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ [14] Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
*3.* In the Torah, *God entered the temple and dwelt with mankind.* God instructed Moses: "And let them make me a sanctuary; that *I may dwell among them."* (Exodus 25:8). Was this Allah of the Qur’an?
'Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the *glory of the Lord* filled the tabernacle. Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the *glory of the Lord* filled the tabernacle.' (Exodus 40:34).
Was this God whose glory entered the tabernacle of Moses, Allah of the Qur’an who can not enter creation? No.
God would give Moses commands from *inside* the tabernacle in the Holy of Holies above the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:22)
*4.* Later, during the time of Solomon, the glory of God filled the temple again: 'When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the *glory of the Lord* above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying, “He is good; his *love* endures forever.” (2 Chronicles 7:1‭-‬3).
His love? Yes, out of His *love,* not *weakness.* Because-unlike the out-of-reach Kaaba god who 'sends down a STONE from heaven' to Muslims-the true God of Israel, the Almighty, loves his people and HIMSELF comes down and *dwells with them!*
This is the clearest evidence that the one ☝️ (monotheistic) 7th century FALSE god of the Kaaba is not the one (monotheistic) TRUE God of Abraham of the previous scriptures who does enter creation.
Allah's claim is the biggest ever act of deception since the creation of the world. Scriptures warned that Satan would come to disguise himself as the Most High God (Isaiah 14:12-14) and even try to imitate God's righteousness (2 Corinthians 11:14-15)
*5.* Finally, God makes a prophecy of Himself coming to the earth *(by entering the temple that was the body of Jesus Christ)* and the *glory of God* being revealed in *Jesus!* :
'A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the *glory of the Lord* will be revealed, and all people will SEE IT together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” (Isaiah 40:3‭-‬5).
Jesus, as the glory of the Lord, will be revealed to and seen by the people!
John the Baptist then confirms the prophecy of Isaiah is about himself, John (the voice of one calling in the wilderness) preparing the way for Jesus:
'This is he [Jesus] who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ ” (Matthew 3:3).
"In the beginning was the *Word,* and the *Word was with God,* and *the Word was God.* The *Word became flesh* and *made his dwelling among us.* We HAVE SEEN *his glory,* the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.(John 1:1‭, ‬14)
The title 'Son of God' simply means God, who is spirit, added flesh to his divine nature. 'Son of God' means God in the flesh.
      Blessings!

Dear Derek, I am a Muslim from Saudi Arabia, I have to respond because the rabbi’s answer is inaccurate and I found many wrong comments from your followers. What we believe in is found in the texts of the Qur’an. All the prophets are Muslims pbuh and the religion of Adam, Noah, Moses, Jesus, Abraham, Muhammad etc. One, the laws change according to the era, but the message is the same, but humans used to distort the word of the Creator, so it is easy to see the contradictions in the Torah and the Injeel. As for the Qur’an, God promised to protect it from distortion, and it is the last of the heavenly books, and Muhammad pbuh is the last of the prophets and a prophet will never come after him.
My advice to you if you want to learn Islam, read the Qur’an and do not ask a rabbi or priest, because we see them as the ones who distorted the word of the Creator in the Torah and the Gospels, and therefore we will not secure them in talking about Islam. Christian and Jewish scholars know that Muhammad pbuh is a prophet, but their religious and ethnic fanaticism is the reason for their reluctance to recognize the truth .
Perhaps you can host Rabbi Mort who converted to Islam, and the Bible was the reason for him to embrace Islam. He is one of the few rabbis who converted to Islam because it is rare for a Jew to convert to Islam because of religious and ethnic fanaticism.
You can also host priests such as: Dr.Jerald Dirks, Samuel Sharcher to talk about the evidence of the Prophet Muhammad's prophecy and why they converted to Islam.
The message of the prophets is all one message dear Eric
The Qur’an is the only heavenly book in which it is not possible to change a single letter
And a correction to the rabbi’s words, Islamic sects are not one religion and this is wrong. The Prophet Muhammad pbuh told us that Muslims will split into sects just as Jews and Christians split into sects and that the group that will enter Paradise will follow the way of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh and what the friends of the Prophet Muhammad were upon
Therefore, you will find some Muslims practicing methods of worship, rituals and belief that were not from the teachings and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh, and these are contrary to the teachings of Islam and the way of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh
Therefore, there is the doctrine of the Salafis, and they are more committed to the texts of the Qur’an and the Sunnah with the understanding of the friends of the Prophet Muhammad pbuh, and they are keen to study the science of hadith in order to know the correct hadith from the weak hadith, and they do not agree to any invention in religion as some Islamic schools do, and they are committed to the path of the Prophet Muhammad and his friends in all aspects of worship and faith.
He suggested hosting Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al-Dimashqi, Sheikh Hassan Somali, Abdur Raheem McCarthy's, Muhammad Tim Humble, or Dr. Tahir Wyatt, Abdullah Smith to talk about the Islamic faith.

Everyone is SO bent on proving unique revelatory authority for their group, they cannot afford to consider this as an influencer on their own belief system. I think the world would be better off if we just humbled ourselves enough to consider that every group that comes into contact with another is influenced and changed forever.

I like this discussion and this rabbi is far more capable of delving into these topics than most Aryanic Orientalists with primitive need to paint Arabs or Islam with a specific brush that makes them feel a bit better about Germanic nations history or Christians history.
The rabbi has given a fair and balanced take. However, there is often lack of acknowledgement that many tribes in western Arabia did consider themselves the descendants of Ishmael, and the custodians of the Kaaba temple of Mecca which was built by Abraham and Ishmael. There were many monotheists in Arabia who called themselves 'Hanafis' and considered both Judaism and Christianity as later religions from the first teachings of the Arab father, Abraham. They consider themselves to be sticking to the Abrahamic traditions rather than later religions. In every community in Arabia, there were a group that were monotheistic and refer only to Abraham. These were among the Arabs who immediately followed Muhammed and they even arrived in Mecca from all over Arabia before Islam gained strength. These Ishmaelite monotheists with affiliation to only Abraham are never considered by western scholars.
The assumption that Ishmael sons didn't hold on to their father Abraham and the assumption that all monotheistic traditions in the peninsula are somehow borrowed from Judaism is an utter and complete erasure of Ishmael and all the tribes that descended from him. Islam respected Judaism, not like how the west thinks, of Judaism being the original and Islam being a copy. No, but rather more as Judaism is what God revealed to our dear cousin Moses before the ultimate message finally revealed to the son of Ishmael. It is an acknowledgement of the decency and truthfulness of Judaism, but the utter refusal of it being a core or origin of monotheism. Quran clearly rejects giving such credit to Judaism or Christianity and rather clearly states: 'then was Abraham Jew or Christian? Now was he?'
Islam indeed sees that Monotheism is Abrahamic, a message started by the father, and ended by the son of Ishmael, with Judaism being perfect temporary message for its time, while the final son of Ishmael, Muhammed, was the end of all Abrahamic messages, the ultimate explainer of it all, and the only perfect and complete iteration of them all.
In the most overly optimistic version of pre Islamic history, native Ishmaelite monotheistic traditions that trace back to Abraham since he built the Kaaba continued for a very long time in Mecca up until one well known trader a few centuries before Muhammed bought and brought the first Idols from North or Western African pagans. Ishmaelites then eventually lost many of their monotheistic mainstream traditions with only few stuck to their guns. Muhammed came in a conquering army to Mecca and literally removed all imported idols and locally made idols from the Kaaba, and he said that Abraham built it for us, his progeny, as a monotheistic temple. Muhammed even mentioned the man who introduced idols to Mecca for the first time and eventually ruined the monotheistic faith of the sons of Ishmael, and mentioned his name as 'Luhay bin Amr' as one of the major sinners among the sons of Ishmael. Arabians, in many versions of their scholarly history, claim that Ishmaelites in Mecca were strictly monotheistic until that aforementioned man introduced idols to Meccans. This is far more deep and local to Arabia than to be ignored. This whole aspect of Arabia is never discussed, with over-focusing on the neighboring Judaistic influence instead of discussing the core ideology of Arabia, and the famous acknowledging of even pagan Arabs that Abraham wasn't pagan. Muhammed was even described by Meccans as trying to bring back ancient myths of monotheism, paradise, and hell. They knew monotheism was old school. Interestingly, even pagan Arabs remained deistically monotheistic, and acknowledged that the creator is rather one single God, but the idols are mere beloved agents accepted by that main God.

Lovely interview thanks! I had fun! There was some good thought for food, or food for thought. Could have added some more (a)gnostic and atheist perspectives added into the mix for flavor maybe, but I can tell both participants were trying to be open and honest with themselves. Some ideas I'd like to bounce back in form of my comment here, I know it's a year late, but also maybe never too late to try and stop rushing towards "judgement day". Recently I have been trying to study a lot of these mid- and near-east connections with regard to language, writing, culture, history, archaeology, anthropology, morphology, syncretism, and 'traditions'. After watching you guys talk, right now my mind is entertaining this thought... what if the Judaism tradition is actually the (radical idea here) original sin of 'syncretism'? What I mean is that this particular region of the Levant is subject to many empires and conquests and many many different traditions. Besides the three largest monotheistic ones, let's not forget the Sphinx and pyramids and Hindu texts etc. Wish you had covered more about the idea that Zoroastrianism could have been an early monotheistic tradition, however my own personal study seems to indicate there was a practice of these various empires absorbing whatever gods there were from whatever territories they conquered or were being conquered by sometimes and subjugating the local gods and subverting them with syncretism. Ahura Mazda allowed Anihita into the 'pantheon', so there's clearly more than one deity present in the Zoroastrian relics. Anihita leads me to the word syncretism in fact, she may share characteristics with Sarasw(v)ati as well as Ishtar/Inanna and also Astarte. Basically my hypothesis is coming from that line in your conversation near the end about the Judaism tradition (which I am holding is archaeologically the oldest between the three "largest" 'monotheisms' and it is ironic you said the phrase "jews make up 1% of the global population", when the descendants of that tradition, one can argue, which are Christianity and Islam, make up a very very large amount of the global population!) being one of polytheism becoming or erasing, depending how we interpret it, the other gods in favor of one god basically. this is where I think all the anger and violence and war is all completely rooted in any tradition no matter how it is interpreted and becoming your concept of the word "other" or however the idea of prejudice is formulated regarding "spirituality" and/or "traditions" that we often find inseparable from the traditions they are born from even if "interpretation" can become an endless cycle. if your inner truth proclaims there can be only one god, then all other gods have to be wrong somehow and this means that other people who believe in other gods are wrong thinking or "wrong headed" also. it is only by harboring a concept of polytheism, that there are different gods for different people, that my truth is not the same truth for another person, that me and that other person may each have a uniquely different inner truth. each person defines the truth of their own god or gods or goddesses or lack thereof. Basically all monotheistic religions are the enemy of polytheism, because monotheism means refusal of other truths leading to conflict between alternate ultimate truths, and polytheism accept the truths of others so that is the only path to accepting our own truth is not the only truth for everyone and that we each get to decide our own truth. spiritual humanists think there's a spirit in each of us but that we can believe in whatever god or gods we want after that, as long as we use reason and logic and the scientific method to determine what is morally wrong and right and help others see the light in this way. Thanks and have a happy day. ✌

    • @austinitesince1979
      @austinitesince1979 6 місяців тому

In conclusion, monotheism is in essence the cancellation of other cultures due to the alternate theory of syncretism that rather than borrowing or stealing ideas from each other, the pursuit of monotheism is undeniably linked to the destruction of other cultures and their pagan gods, which we find ample evidence of when we look at lal the history and archaeology for example with all empires and world conquests and the replacement of whatever local god or gods exist in a place with the incoming god or gods from another place. Zoroastrianism may have been an earlier form of syncretism or morphology that was later borrowed by Judaism and then later warped by both Christianity and Islam which appear at a glance to be even more extreme versions of what the modern unenlightened young people in the american media these days are calling 'cancel culture'. All three big monotheisms have to invalidate all other religions to remain the sole truth for the people that believe in them. Religious pursuit can be peaceful as long as you can accept that your absolute truth is not the same for another person and not ever try to demand to convert someone else to abandon their own spirituality for your own personal faith or truth.

Also the Quran challenges the reader to produce a chapter similar to the linguistic excellence written in Quran. No one in 1400yrs has been able to imitate the Quran yet. Here are my opinion on your podcast with Rev. Reuben Firestone :
    - Almost every thing said is true in clean Islam
    - All monotheistic followers pray to one & the same God
    - There are very similarities in the Canon - Rituals - principles and values across .
But R. Firestone said it every region infuses the shape and practices of the same religion of the region.

It was a great interview. Enjoyed listening to it.
It was a pleasant surprise to hear such positive things about Islam from a Jewish rabbi.
Most of the religions of the world initially give very simple teachings for human education and training,
but later the self-interested priests change these religions for their own purposes. Quran have discussed this phenamena in detail.
If such changes are removed from these religions, the commonality in the pure religions is much greater than the disagreement.
In religions that believe in the oneness of God, this sharing is very high.
In order to avoid the fog created by selfish priests and reach the original teachings of the religion,
it is necessary to look at the original books of the prophets without any commentary, history and traditions, then one can reach the original message of the Prophets.
