In 2004, I was five and I was in Thailand with my family during the tsunami. Hopefully, our mother wanted to go the the zoo very early in the morning. The zoo was in a mountain, far from the beach. It’s because of her that we are still alive today! Such a sad event...

The sign of retracting water sadly only has a chance of 50% to occur. It happens if the wave through hits first instead of the crest (peak). Also, the waves height mid-ocean is seldom bigger than 30cm and hardly detectable. It builds up in shallow water near the coast to a few meters and looses 99% of its speed from originally 500-800 kph to around 30-50 kph.
@@Berries.creamm don’t let these guys get in your head lol like the video said, tsunamis almost always happen in the pacific. Florida is on the east coast. You will be in the warmer safer Atlantic Ocean my friend, have fun.
I remember as a kid talking to my cousin(also a kid), he said you could dive under the tsunami and save yourself much like you can do that with normal waves to break through without a slap. if a tsunami comes, which is usually unexpected, you will be screwed. Now despite that they will usually warn you a couple hours ahead of time, that time dosent make up for the packing and the driving. Also where would you go, a hotel like a billion miles away. No amount of research will prep you for a tsunami. It's like when people say stay calm when sharks are around. No regular person would stay calm in that situation. I think strategic thinking in that situation is in order - ask your mother if she wants to head on over to a restaurant 1km inland on a nice hill with great views for some wine.

Yeah I live in the Edward's Plateau of Texas and the only serious water trouble I've seen is from the usual flooding from the freak storms we get in the summer and from hurricane Harvey in 2017
When I was a kid in Hawaii we had tsunami drills. We left school and walked uphill and in land. Hawaii has an advanced warning system and sirens so you do have time to get to safety.
Trying to put things together for me as a mom - choose the beach with some hilly background - choose the island with some islands around as shield ones - ask your hotel which internet portal we can watch/ be warned if it is expected to happen. - before going to the beach, make a small talk with kids about what we should look for or do if it ever happens - if you have watched a lot of scary movies with kids, include one with disasters. - keep your eye on water pulling back (only 50% I know but better than nothing)
The only thing that separates my house and the ocean is an old rusty fence, same for my neighbours. So anytime we have a strong earthquake because mostly we get small ones you can barely feel we have to make sure we don't have a tsunami heading for us.
as someone who lives 3-5 minutes away from the ocean, this is one of my biggest fears but what scares me more is that when dangerous things occur, my family is like eh its okay nothing will happen, even when news is talking about it and all and government says to move away like about a few months ago we got a warning a cyclone will hit and my family is like eh we'll be fine, i live with my grandparents and my mom, so my grandma was the one saying we are ok here its alright even her sons from abroad were telling her we should stay at a hotel for a few days to be safe, but she said no thankfully the cyclone moved to another direction and didnt hit us but it was very close but im scared if something happens, god forbid my family will say its ok and wont do anything about it
There was this girl one time in a vacation with her parents, she studies stuff like this and when she saw a sign she instantly told everyone a tsunami is coming tus saving many lives and got rewarded a hero's medal. I forgot her name.
How do more people not know the signs though? I mean I get it if they don’t know what tsunamis are, but chasing the tide after it rapidly gets pulled out, seriously?
Ikr you just think about your family and you’re life. I’m literally still young and I tell my self I’m not ready to die. And I think about my family I don’t want them to die😭😭😭😭😩😩😩😩
My aunt and cousin (her daughter) survived the 2004 Tsunami that hit the Sri Lankan island as well. They used to live in the coastal area so they became victim to this hazard. Luckily they have been dragged by the current to a shelter and have been stuck inside that the whole time. My cousin was only a few months old infant. I remember my aunt saying that her hand let go of my cousin but she didn't give up, she somehow reached down the water and caught my cousin back up. It was terrifying, I'm shook at how she handled it and how they managed to survive this whole incident, but I'm glad they're still alive. My cousin is now 16 years old and they're both doing better.
My daughter is 3 months old today. I also have two sons 3 and 7. Imagining trying to get a hold on my tiny child after losing hold is a horrific thought. I'm so glad your aunt and cousin are ok.
I’ve always been terrified of tsunamis. My friend lives right next to the beach idk how she isn’t scared. I slept at her house once and couldn’t sleep because I could only hear the waves hitting the rocks. 😂
Same. I was 5 or 6 when the tsunami tragedy in Aceh 2004 happened. They keep showing it on tv for years. I've lost interest in oceanside dwellings becauae of it 😂 unless it's mountain height home overlooking one. No beaches for me thanks. (Tips: The mosques in Aceh are among the only intact buildings when the tsunami hit. All the victims who ran into them survived to tell the stories alongside those whose houses are near them and witnessed it firsthand while they stood on their roofs (there are photographic evidences on this too, might wanna search up on it). So, maybe other than run for the high grounds, the hills, you can try the mosque. Hope this helps lol)
It's so important for people to know this...Sadly, I've seen a lot of videos and footage of previous moments of tsunamis that happened and was heartbreaking to watch so many ppl, speacially families with children, going into the seabed that was left exposed while the water receded; they were collecting fish and seashells not realizing they were about to die
yep. it's your best bet if you live in indonesia. we dont have any strong concrete building nor high places near our beaches, we also do not have tsunami alarms thats functions. you're basically a dead man if you are on the beach when tsunami happens. we stays out from beaches that in the danger zone because we experience major earthquake maybe 5 or 6 times a year. so, if ya'll want to go to our country.... good luck and godspeed.
Two friends of mine were in Thailand and ended up running up the nearest, tallest hill with the water nipping at their heals. They BARELY survived, along with a random stray dog. They stayed up there for several days. They started a dog rescue organization and a local food stand operator kept them fed until they could fly back to their home in The Netherlands. I hadn't heard of any of this until I happened to see the wife getting interviewed on a local Dutch TV station. That food stand lady was a saint, feeding them and all the other random survivors for free. My friends go back there each year for charity work, mostly for the dogs and are still helped by the food stand owner, friends for life, I'd say!
Every single time I go on holiday I watch out for the signs coz tsunamis are the thing in life that scares me the most and the reason is because I’m scared that if I’m the only one that dies my family will be heartbroken

I’m literally right beside the ocean right now. :D but we are have lot of hill and stuff so the plates don’t go out of place so we never get earthquakes to cause tsunami. But I still scared to ocean. I’m also from mountain region so it scary @-@ Sorry for bad English

Honestly my country literally had so many earthquakes and tsunamis before but the thing is that we have coral reefs and mangroves so the tsunami died before it even hit land so we lucky asf
Seeing multiple people commenting their experiences is astonishing because I get to read their stories. Anyways I'm glad those who went through this tramatic experience are okay.
The Korean cram school where I worked nearly lost a teacher in the Boxing Day Tsunami. She was on a sea kayaking vacation. We were alarmed when we didn't hear from her for a couple of days. Then she sent an email out to everybody on her contact list: "I'm okay. I'll tell you about it when I get back." That morning she had gone down to the beach and it didn't look right. She was pondering this when she noticed that the locals were moving away from the beach, so Lisa started walking away from the beach as well. Then she noticed that people were running past her. She looked back and saw the wave and started running. A small pickup truck pulled up along side her as she ran and a man in the back asked, "Do you need help?" Lisa didn't even stop running. She just lifted up her arms and they pulled her into the truck and she was one of the people who got to high ground.
Finally, something useful. I was watching what to do if a sinkhole appeared or if I was attacked by a tiger. LOL. But tsunamis, as we've seen over the past 20 years, happen A LOT. And the really big one in 2004 killed 250,000 people. It could be very useful, tips to survive one. Those 500 Swedish tourists vacationing in Thailand and dying from the 2004 tsunami are a prime example of people who don't live near tsunami zones, but who could've benefited greatly from knowing what to do.

Trying to put things together for me as a mom
- choose the beach with some hilly background
- choose the island with some islands around as shield ones
- ask your hotel which internet portal we can watch/ be warned if it is expected to happen.
- before going to the beach, make a small talk with kids about what we should look for or do if it ever happens
- if you have watched a lot of scary movies with kids, include one with disasters.
- keep your eye on water pulling back (only 50% I know but better than nothing)

The only thing that separates my house and the ocean is an old rusty fence, same for my neighbours. So anytime we have a strong earthquake because mostly we get small ones you can barely feel we have to make sure we don't have a tsunami heading for us.

like about a few months ago we got a warning a cyclone will hit and my family is like eh we'll be fine, i live with my grandparents and my mom, so my grandma was the one saying we are ok here its alright
even her sons from abroad were telling her we should stay at a hotel for a few days to be safe, but she said no
thankfully the cyclone moved to another direction and didnt hit us but it was very close

Thank you for sharing this story! ❤️

My daughter is 3 months old today. I also have two sons 3 and 7. Imagining trying to get a hold on my tiny child after losing hold is a horrific thought. I'm so glad your aunt and cousin are ok.
How many of you immediately imagined yourself hanging out with your friends at the beach, seeing the water recede and getting them out safely in time?
I’ve always been terrified of tsunamis. My friend lives right next to the beach idk how she isn’t scared. I slept at her house once and couldn’t sleep because I could only hear the waves hitting the rocks. 😂
that's so nice and scary at the same time lmao

Holy crap. Thxs for the tips as my country had a tsunami yesterday. I used these tips and it was successful! Not much injuries tysm
