Never seen nor heard of burning cotton stalks as a common method. Mowing/shredding and using a harrow would seem to be more common.

Yes it is quite common down here, Maybe not on pivote irrigation but we needed to laser level parts of the field so we did it the whole field anyway. But on drip irrigation it's very common because the stocks can damage the drip. And also it can be a headache to do tillage on very Sandy soils.
