DESCANSO GARDENS - LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE

Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge is a stunning showcase of natural beauty and horticultural artistry. On our visit on June 8th, William and I were greeted by perfect weather, with temperatures in the mid-70s F. (around 24 C.). This pleasant climate enhanced our experience as we meandered through the vibrant and diverse landscapes of the gardens. Our journey began in the Rose Garden, where we were captivated by the array of colors and fragrances from the meticulously maintained rose bushes. While not all of the roses were in perfect bloom, many were, creating a tapestry of sensory delight that told its own story.
Our exploration continued as we strolled to The Lake, which sadly was covered with an algae bloom that made it look as though soil had been strewn all over it. Despite this, the area retained a unique charm. The Mulberry Pond was quite serene, with mid-sized turtles paddling about, adding a touch of lively movement to the tranquil waters. In the California Oak Grove, we marveled at the majestic oaks, their sprawling branches providing a canopy of shade and a sense of timeless grandeur. The Camilla Forest had few blooms, as their peak bloom time is in December through February, but the lush, evergreen foliage still created an enchanting atmosphere.
We concluded our visit at Boddy House, an elegant historical residence that offered a glimpse into the garden's storied past. Each area of Descanso Gardens we visited left us with a deeper appreciation for nature's beauty and the meticulous care that goes into maintaining such a cherished public space.
