    Tom Quayle Reviews for Guitar Interactive Issue 40
    Guitar Interactive Magazine | Issue 40 | Brian May

    Welcome to GI 40, a very special issue that we've been hoping to bring you... well, since we first planned the magazine!
    Brian May is a unique figure in Rock guitar and he has been interviewed on many occasions in many different publications, so when we were finally able to arrange an interview with him, we decided to take a different route. Instead of sending a mere journalist to interview him and his highly regarded tech expert, Pete Malandrone, we sent Jamie Humphries, who as our features explain has a unique inside approach to the Brian May team. We like to think we've produced the definitive Brian May special as a result.
    Also on board is Zakk Wylde, making a welcome return to GI, telling us why he's going into the guitars and amps business!
    Don't forget the usual abundance of reviews, columns and this issue's stonking competition opportunity to win a complete set of Moog's Minifooger pedals - in our estimation some of the finest effects pedals money can buy!

    In other words,ESP made the type of Strat,that Fender is refusing to made for the modern player,with a proper trem,locking tuners,a proper nut,a neck joint that isn't atrocious and brand name pickups.Also,the truss rod adjustment wheel,next to to the neck pickups,is a feature that every guitar should have.

      +greekfreak1980 Imagine the outrage if Fender created an instrument like this - Fender makes instruments moreso for the traditionalist - leaving a gap for companies like ESP and Yamaha to come up with instruments like this with better specs and, arguably, better build. We win, if you ask me, particularly as Fender wouldn't be making something like this cheap...

      The Elite series is the Deluxe , same guitar just re-branded . It started with the plus in the late 80's and then was re-branded the Deluxe now it is the Elite .

    A real shame that ESP doesn't make anything like this anymore. The closest LTD Snappers in the current range have a much more modern configuration, with a Floyd Rose and more in your face finishes - some of which I actually really like, but others that seem a bit out of place (like the SN1000-FR that has H S S Fishman Classics but an ultra-modern black & white finish, whereas something more elegant would have fit much better I think).
    I've only tried a Floyd once so far (on a Jackson 7 string) and didn't really get on with it, hoping to try an H S S Superstrat style guitar with a more traditional style non-locking tremolo next. I wonder if ESP are trying to keep their modern-appointed but more traditional style Superstrats in the top end Original Series which is really big money. All of the LTD and E-II Snappers are much more contemporary. It's great to have that as an option, even as most of their range, but it's disappointing that they no longer have anything to compete with stuff like Ibanez AZ, Schecter Nick Johnston, Fender etc in that middle price range.
    There is actually a second hand Original Series Snapper Burner in a guitar store near me. Very tempting despite the £2000 price tag - as actually that's not too bad considering it's in perfect condition. H S S with the original ESP pickups, before they started putting Seymour Duncans as standard in the top end Japanese custom shop Snappers.

    Just bought one last week and I think it's a GREAT instrument for its price point. I didn't expect much when came to try it in the store, cause last time I tried an LTD (st-213) it felt cheap and fuzzy. BUT, this LTD is in a different level that feels closer to a Japanese ESP (E-II) or an American one, in terms of quality, percision, sound and hardware. BTW it's made in Korea which is known for its high level luthiers and assembling quality (please correct me if I am mistaken...).
    It has everything I was looking for in a guitar: a Strat type guitar which is not too vintage, but still has some twangy sounds, while lettting you rock with the humbucker in the bridge. Generally, that hum brings exactly the needed 'guts' into the tool, which are so much missing in regular vintage style Strats (in my opinion anyhow...).
    The pickups are brilliant, with very high output and gain as expected from Duncans.
    The neck is super comfortable (not too thin, not too thick) and remindes me much more expensive MusicMan guitars. It has a smooth satin finish and nice abalone inlays (I have the maple fretboard which looks beautiful).
    The Wilkinson trem bridge is just awesome, as well as the locking tuners and the truss rod.
    Bottom line: A well-made instrument, super versatile, premium spec and hardware, and great playability - all these in a very reasonable price. LOVING IT!

      Have you ever played an Esp Eclipse II ? How is the neck on the SN-1000W? Comparable to the Eclipse? Thanks!

    • @wandcfirst
      @wandcfirst 7 років тому +2

      xchump I haven't tried an Eclipse II but I do have an EC1000 and I'd say the necks are quite similar.. Typical ESP U shape, flat, but not as flat as Ibanez. Pretty comfortable all round!

    • @xchump
      @xchump 7 років тому +1

      Appreciate the quick reply! If you don't mind me asking a couple more...are the frets also similar? I love the neck and frets on my Eclipse(and I'm pretty sure it's the same as the ec1000). Also, does it ever bother you to have only one tone control for all three pickups?

    • @wandcfirst
      @wandcfirst 7 років тому +2

      xchump Yep! The usual huge ESP XJ frets! I'm ok with the one tone pot, the pickups match quite well, the Custom 5 is a pretty bright scooped mids humbucker and the SSL 3's are high output single coils, darker sounding than more vintage ones so it usually works for the stuff I play.

    • @xchump

      Sounds good to me! One thought...Is it made in China? Do you see on your guitar where it's made? I thought it'd be in Korea but I heard somewhere that it was Chinese. If so, how do you think it compares in quality to your Korean made Ec1000 (cause I know that the Ec1000's are high quality). Thanks!

    Dear GI, I find my self having to look all over the web to find the country of origin eventually I find a store that has no problem telling me it is made in South Korea and that is not a problem, but you have had 7:55 minutes of my life to say where it was made and a list of other things in print that is nothing about the guitar one of the first thing that goes through my head is where it is made and I'm sure the readers and UA-cam watchers ask their selves the same thing can you please add the country of origin to your videos, thank you, other then that a really good demo.

    You got most of the specs right but still got the neck profile wrong which can cause someone to not purchase this guitar. this is a THIN U contour... ESP does not do a C profile at all... Please be accurate.

    • @oysteinhaugen7055
      @oysteinhaugen7055 8 років тому

      +Thomas Joulwan so difficult to explain, it might be the amp/modeler he's using.. to me it doesn't sound dynamic enough, it doesn't have enough "quack". even the bridge humbucker sounds harsh to me. Probably an amp-modeler...

    • @tmjvtxtmjvtx
      @tmjvtxtmjvtx 8 років тому

      interesting thought...i kinda agree

    • @wandcfirst
      @wandcfirst 8 років тому +1

      +Oystein Haugen I agree, I own this guitar, and love it, BUT it isn't doesn't really have that strat "quack" because the neck and middle pickups are pretty high output Seymour Duncan "hot strat" types. That suits me, because I'm a hard rock player but I think you'd need to replace them with something lower output for a more traditional Strat sound. I do really like the bridge humbucker though, it's quite scooped in the mids so very clear (to my ears anyway!)

    • @nathanc6611
      @nathanc6611 8 років тому +2

      It's not meant to be a traditional strat sound...if you want that get a strat with more traditional features. I hear fender makes a few different types
