Gosh Tina/Jenna was misused in Glee so much. She carried SO MANY songs with her background vocals and has amazing range. Tina/Jenna was always sidelined despite being an OG Glee club member, a Broadway star, a triple threat (acting, singing/piano, dancing), and the show treated her like trash.
When you want to showcase a lyric, a simple but profound message or story , rather than moving the focus to the 'star'/diva, there really were no better options in that cast than Jenna. 'True Colors' 'First Ever I Saw Your Face' 'Imagination' 'I don't know how to Love Him' really should not be given to Lea or Naya or Amber, because they can't restrain themselves. Jenna really knows when less is more, and she is one of the few, who can sing a song and never 'gild the lily' with too much vibrato that moves that focus away from what is sung, to how it is sung. When you are looking for a light touch rather than a heavy hand, give it to her!
For a show that made a big deal about inclusivity they definitely made sure to stick all the coloured people in the background! The only time I heard Tina, Mercedes, Mike, Santana getting the attention they so much deserved was when Rachel wasn’t singing or something dramatic had happened to her!
Especially the asian characters are near nonexistent on this show, like Tina was literally in the og FIVE of the Glee club, her actress is a great singer and dancer who has been on Broadway since age 9, yet she barely ever got to sing and all her stories were either nonexistent or shit. Santana imo got a very fair amount of scenes and songs though after they decided to make her a more major character and a lesbian, she got a lot compared to most characters that weren't Rachel, and Mercedes got a lot of songs too, but not very good stories to go along with said songs. They got by far the most of any female character that wasn't Rachel, it's just that Rachel specifically got way too much. Quinn barely sung even though she was one of the most major characters in the first season, Brit sang a fair amount for her skill level but still not that much, Sugar never got an arc about improving even though her actress can sing really well, and Marley, Kitty, and Unique didn't get too sing that much either because the show ignored them in favour of Rachel in New York. I hate how there used to be so much 'omg we need Rachel and Finn to be the female and male lead' drama. Artie is objectively the best singer in Glee until Blaine comes along, it's not even a competition, and Mercedes is better than Rachel in every genre except for musical theatre. For a show about outcasts, the show sure focused a lot on the tall white jock and the white theatre nerd who is still fairly conventionally attractive by all standards except those of Hollywood, all while pretending they were better than they really were for plot reasons. Imagine how different it would've been if the show focused on the pairing of Artie and Tina or Mercedes (never happened on the show but they have amazing vocal chemistry). Like they didn't even have the guts to say they didn't view them as leading man/woman material just because theyre a nerd in a wheelchair and a shy goth asian or a plussize darkskin black woman. Where was Artie's New York makeover?? His actor is an attractive ex-boyband member, yet they never tried to show his character as attractive except for 2 fantasy sequences where he's not even in the damn chair. Ryan Murphy just sucks in general. Apparently he had started disliking Kurts actor, but Kurt was a very important character and a huge part of what made Glee popular, so he couldn't punish him directly, and instead did shit like give Laurens actress, his friend, less scenes. :/
I don't disagree with your comment. But I wanted to point out that calling non-white people "coloured" is considered offensive and outdated in many places. It's better to just say things like "non-white", "person/people of colour", or just explicitly mention the person's race/ethnicity if it's relevant to describing them.
Have you listened to Standing On My Own by Jenna Ushkowitz? Go listen to her songs outside Glee. They are amazing, but somehow not really popular. She has at least 2 songs originally sung by her, Standing On My Own and Minefield of Love. And a few group songs (Those 2 songs I mentioned were solos lol)
