I always look forward to seeing videos of your journey through Mzanzi my brother. You have a more in-depth narrative and interest than most. SA is a very young republic emerging slowly from 4oo years of violent decimation and domination to freedom and the now struggle for parity and equality. Beyond the selfies: your deep analysis of the complexities of this country is spot on.
That's a nice country. Especially for students. Africa is beautiful. A good place to experience life. Africa will teach you how to survive in various situations. I love my continent. How stable is electricity there?
Hi Jarred. I fully agree with your commentary... It is heartfelt and brave... I really enjoyed all your video clips... Enjoy your journey and welcome. I salute you.
Hey Jared, I'm a South African, Cape Town born in the Caribbean Islands. I want to challenge you to go watch a local rugby game and experiance the energy of a local derby. This is something i truly miss, a local rivalry between two coloured clubs. Just be careful which clubs you go visit/watch. I'm from Ravensmead, Cape Town and MY local club is Tygerburg RFC. It is safe to go there [i recommend that you can even contact some of the officials and thay will definitely assist you if you decide to go]
You have such a calming demeanour about you. I hope you continue to grow and learn more about yourself. Your journey seems a lot bigger than just experiencing a new place. Stay blessed.

@@jdtimecapsule I am currently in Northern Ireland were I live, but planning on flying to Durban next week, my old home town. If you're interested I could show you real Africa outside the city. I have lived in a hut in a beautiful African village and have good friends there. The music on Sundays I think would fascinate you, their are many different types and the relaxed vibe is amazing. My late husband and I had the first professional recording studio in Durban, originally analogue. We recorded Ladysmith black Mambaso's first demos and albums, as a result Paul Simon recorded them with Graceland amongst many other artists of all genre's.. There is so much off the beaten track. Wild beaches, historic Anglo Boer and Zulu war places in the hinterland. After you've seen a bit of the city and the lovely people there. Oh and I lived with Indians in Durban as well, good mates, can give you some home made Durban cuisine and take you to see some of the Indian temples and cultural events. Just to getting to know people one on one. Let me know if you're interested, I'd love to show you around.

If you go to KZN you absolutely have to go to the Drakensburg, the most beautiful place in the world.
As a local boy, this video really made me feel so proud to be South African. A stranger you meet on the train/taxi or just in passing could be one of the nicest people you will meet in your life. Unfortunately alot of people have their guards up and are not willing to open up to one another because of various reasons. But, we do know how to care for one another. Crime is an issue that affects many BUT the vast majority are good people. The poorest people are the most humble people. Racism is alive and well BUT not on a massive scale though. Speak to people and see how they warm up to you once they start trusting you. Lastly, there is so many things to do in Cape Town, you could literally just ask anyone lol

Welcome to South Africa. My home land is a beautiful place with a complex history. I think it’s the best place in the world but that’s really just my opinion. I guess it’s easy for one to be sentimental about their home. That being said, this place is truly unique.
Great video and observations. I'm from Latin America living in the US and I can't wait to explore South Africa and also other countries in the area. 🙏🏽💕👏🏽👏🏽
I love seeing foreigners visit South Africa & recognize that we have such a hard, difficult & painful but yet rich history. I hate that oppression is a thing that we are still trying to recover from, even after so many years. I'm so greatful every day that equality is what we are striving for. My hope for our country is that we can all see each others as equal, regardless of race, gender, languages, culture, religion & sexual orientation
I'm a South African who just relocated to the Netherlands exactly a month ago now. This is the second time I would have lived outside my country. Four years ago I temporarily relocated to Central Europe after quitting my job and that was majorly uncomfortable but it came with peace of mind. Now we've permanently emigrated to the Netherlands and I will say this is different knowing the permanence of it, this time around I'm learning the language, trying the food, trying to follow politics and even pop culture - I will say, in order for one to fit in and allow a chapter to unfold - you have to completely immerse yourself, especially when there are major cultural differences. All the best. You're doing great.
Dude, your story telling made me really touched me. I hope your journey is one that will bring you a new sense of joy, self and achievement. Btw I'm a south African living in the uk.

Welcome to South Africa Jared. Our country is so unique and beautiful. I wish you an incredible time in our country. Not sure if you have been to Big bay up the west coast but worth visiting Eden on the Bay. The west coast is stunning. Love from an old African "White" man !! ....ps...I've lived my whole life in Capetown....need another couple of lives to explore the rest of the crazy world we're meant to make sense of ! 😁❤
You chose an awewome country to visit. I am from the Cape Province and when I went over to the US I had to make friends quick due to the loneliness. What help a lot was the when I met a felloww South African in NY and we could explore most of the US together. It was also my 1st time being called black but I just went with it. South Africa is an extraordinary place and you will fall in love to the point where this will become your 2nd home. It does get easier. Enjoy all the cultures and make lots of friends.
Im really glad you are enjoying South Africa we might have some problems but we always rise above it,South Africa is so beautyful when you embrace all cultures and races 🇿🇦 im proud to be South African.
There's nothing easy about the crime rate in Cape Town. Eastern Cape is the easy mode in my opinion. The big cities can be too populated and can seem too congested. I guess it depends on where you find yourself in Cape Town. I can tell you for a fact Cape Town is anything but easy mode for the other half of it's population
This was so honest and accurate! As a South African I'm still learning...this journey never ends fam...the number 1 thing I hope for, is that you have a chance to experience the authentic love that my country displays.... every province is uniquely different but that is one constant factor anybody would experience throughout the country.
Most awesome video. Would have loved to comment on the video but your attitude has made it possible for you to open up as many doors as you choose too! Enjoy it all and I hope that the journey is most awesome.
Your video makes me emotional. All the things you mentioned are 100% true. We, South African are very well informed, about what goes on in America and around the world and that is very impressive. I love the fact that you mentioned that.
Welcome Jared. I hope you do find a wonderful home here through your journey, and perhaps even a permanent home some day. There is so much good to experience here... And some bad, but then that is the world for you. I look forward to seeing how your journey unfolds, as you share it.
Love that you are enjoying our beautiful city and country. I hope you will get to explore other parts of South Africa too as each region is beautiful and complex in its own way.
As a white South African, I would suggest you also try to visit Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, there's awesome old Hotels, Camping, whitewater rafting on the Zambezi. Other sites are the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg (eg. Champagne Castle, not too far from Durban) and in Mpumalanga Province, the Mac-Mac Falls & Blyde River Canyon, the Pinnacle, God's Window near Graskop / Sabie. Enjoy South Africa Bra!!!

Great video and I'm happy that you get to experience our home the way you do. :) I have a friend that's temporarily living in USA Philadelphia, he's lived in Florida as well for a couple of months , everytime I get to talk to him he always stresses the fact that he misses home because he doesn't feel the richness of culture that side. And to have someone from that side to confirm that they feel richness in our culture means alot, it means we really are who we are and we're strong like that. I'm glad once more that you get to experience this cause I've always felt like everyone from other places other than SA should get to live and experience how life is here. I enjoyed your video and honesty :) good luck in everything you do while you still here
Excellent video. I think you'll be quite surprised by Durban and Kwa-Zulu Natal (I'm from that neck of the woods) and even wonder if we're in the same country. Cape Town is quite unique in SA because of how "international" it is, and is part of the reason I stayed after I moved. The race thing as a social construct also resonates with me. I look Indian but I technically have some European heritage on my mother's side. She's "Anglo-Indian", meaning a mix of British and Indian if she were in India, but here in SA she's closer to "coloured", even though she marks Indian as her demographic. If you were to meet her she could even pass for a well-tanned white person. But as for myself, I see myself as a mix of all things and the colour of my skin is the last thing I think about. I always like to joke that I was born on the internet.
thank you for sharing your experience! I live in Johannesburg. but one place you must visit is Mpumalanga. I went a few years ago to check out the scenery. it's very beautiful. I also really loved visiting the Drakensberg mountains.

My father used to say that the greatest education is to travel - but he could only travel via books, as he was in internal exile during the apartheid years. I have been abroad several times, and I became convinced that Cape Town is indeed a special place. This is a brave thing that you have done, and it can become a lonely venture. I am impressed with your sound insights, especially on media imperialism and the social construction of race, the latter which still very much bedevils our beautiful, multilingual, multicultural country. If ever you are in need of a (South African) home cooked meal, my family and I would be honoured to host you. I was in media (radio) for more than three decades, and am now an itinerant academic. Is it your obvious worship of celebrity culture, your blatant hypocrisy or maybe it's more wholesome in that you only rank 19th in world in terms of quality of life? Yup, that's 19 other countries with better living conditions than you.
Look, atleast we know how governments corrupt unlike yours who consistently poke their arrogant noses in everyone's affairs. I mean, why not compare us to a far more worthwhile country like Australia or Switzerland, where education and healthcare is free and you don't have to break an arm and a leg to afford adequate provisions.

Hi Marsha, thank you for your comment. I would love to visit your club in Zimbabwe and share about my experiences. Please send me an email jareddawsonbiz@gmail.com. Thank you.
Kindly tell me how you get to 400 years?
@spider man Thanks, Cradle of mankind just north west of Johannesburg South Africa is everyone's ancestral land
@spider man Agree. I also found those comments about the statues historically incorrect.
ANZ ruined South Africa. I hope it was worth it. Present day slums, load shedding, crime, poverty. Now what for a once beautiful place?
That's a nice country. Especially for students. Africa is beautiful. A good place to experience life. Africa will teach you how to survive in various situations. I love my continent.
How stable is electricity there?
Honestly, not very stable haha. There are scheduled power outages. They disrupt your life, but people learn to live with this reality.

It is safe to go there [i recommend that you can even contact some of the officials and thay will definitely assist you if you decide to go]
@spider man Food is Cultural first... He leaves a little informed... Joburg and Pretoria isn't the whole of South Africa
You're such a great speaker... You speak with such honesty. It's refreshing to see, within the media industry

You have such a calming demeanour about you. I hope you continue to grow and learn more about yourself. Your journey seems a lot bigger than just experiencing a new place. Stay blessed.
In only six months, you have already captured South Africa in nearly all its entirety.
It's not common for foreigners to describe South Africa so on the nail.
Looking forward to more insights from you in the future.
Thanks for sharing this, buddy! I would love to see more and hear more from you! The way you approached this video as an cultural (almost anthropological) analysis is fascinating! Best of luck, my friend!

I love your openess about our country. Thank you for picking our homeland🇿🇦🇿🇦enjoy your stay here brother. We're really a very diverse nation. Watching your video made me proud to be 🇿🇦🇿🇦

Welcome to South Africa. My home land is a beautiful place with a complex history. I think it’s the best place in the world but that’s really just my opinion. I guess it’s easy for one to be sentimental about their home. That being said, this place is truly unique.

Cape Town is like South Africa on easy mode.
I hope you enjoy your time here, and hope you get time to see different provinces.
@@RSVPrr he's obviously talking about Claremont. That place is south africa on easy mode for sure

You're very well spoken & articulate, you get things across very well. Being open minded, looking for growth & welcoming challenges are definitely qualities that Will help you get the most out of SA. You will understand why different people are the way they are. For instance you noted apartheid is still happening & it's impacts still lingering. People are very socially challenged here but with your attitude you'll be able to see why. I'm a fully black South African by the way, watching alot of Americans come over & I wish I could walk you all through this journey, give you SA in the most authentic way & not traumatize you. Most seem to gravitate to cape Town though which is a more gentle start, so that's good. Even us South Africans aspire for Cape Town. Wish you all the best, love your attitude!

Dear Jared, welcome home! Ulapha eMzantsi Afrika, usekhaya ngoku - jy is hier in Suid Afrika, jy is nou tuis - you are here in South Africa, you are home now! Our ancestry is as diverse as yours, but it is rooted in Africa, so there would be much to discuss. Once again: Wamkelekile, welkom, welcome!
