    This is my favorite video that I have made. The story is very interesting, it's so far removed from what CS is now but there are some interesting parallels that I like a lot. It's crazy to look at how far we've come. I make it no secret that I have not been around since these times, this was far before my time. CPL Winter 2001 caused a ripple effect within the esports world that led to counter-strike being seen as the juggernaut that it is now. We wouldn't be here without it. "The Place Counter-Strike Began" is not an overstatement.

      Hey. You have to go back further than 2001.
      1999 Smackdown London Ontario
      2000 Babbages CPL Winter Invite was live streamed on a website that I cant remember the name of now. was gotfrag or something. Was huge for the exploding comp scene.
      Edit: I was here at CPL Summer 2001 on redPhive. Prize pool was $30k. It was def the 1st big open lan major.

    2:00 In my opinion the reason CPL winter 2001 became known as the first ever major was because it was the first time that we truly had the best teams in the world all playing in the same event. Before the tournament, the EU and NA scenes were entirely separate from each other. This was the first tournament where europe and america's best were both going at it after 1-2 years of online trash talk.

    • @AfroPuff
      @AfroPuff 3 місяці тому +1

      Not entirely true - Babbages CPL 2000 had EU teams such as mTw / Eyeballers. It is true that SK wasn't there, and some of the people from Eyeballers went to NiP, but that was the first time I can recall having EU teams at a Counterstrike CPL competition, and they were very good.

    2001, I was 8 years of age...Now 30. Discovering CS 1.3 or 1.5 and asking the operator in the LAN club to put me and my little friends into a game of CS is a fond memory and is something that I will never forget. This game carries so much history about it and I love remembering the good old times.

      RIP. I used to be a CAL admin. Good old days. But it’s absolutely AMAZING to see how far CS has come. I remember going to the Columbus major - first csgo major in NA and meeting a lot of old internet friends from the CAL days and we all were just in awe … we used to dream of the idea of CS being able to fill stadiums/arenas and there we were witnessing it with our own eyes.

    this was a great video! I've always had an affinity of being interested in looking back through old cs and quake history, and seeing all of these old teams and future up-and-comers creates a nice cloud of mystery about them.

    I was two years old at the time and didn't really get into CS until more than 10 years later (already in CS:GO). The year was 2013 when during the Dreamhack Winter, the first CS:GO major, I found out about esports and professional gaming. I basically had no idea something like that existed. I later got to find out about some of the legendary organizations and players of the 1.6 era, even the ones which weren't active anymore when I first got into playing.
    Either way, I really appreciate this video, because I had no idea what the first CS major was, when and where it took place or who played there. This video basically took me as close as possible to watching the tournament, even talking about the score lines and stories of it all. Amazing video! Thanks for sharing this with us.

    Good video but I feel like the storytelling could have been done a lot better via some video and some better pacing, it really felt like you were just reading numbers off a web-page at some points. The CRT aesthetic you used is a very nice touch but I feel as if it clashes with the modern fonts and aesthetic, you should've considered using old early 2000s fonts that were popular and used back then.

    What’s crazy is last night I had this random inclination to browse through those early CPL matches on liquipedia and an old 1.6 semi pro buddy of mine were talking about all the old pro 1.5/1.6 teams. Haven’t thought about that stuff in like 15 years and this video drops today. I met Chameleon once a long time ago and was trying to find a pic of him because I just couldn’t remember what he looked like. Crazy how such historical moments( in the realm of CS at least) are lost to time. It’s amazing how some of these guys managed to turn 5 dudes just playing CS together into what are now huge international orgs. Things have come so far in such a huge way.

    Great vid! I would love to see more stories about the beginning of Counter-Strike. We need quality content that can keep these stories alive for future generations. And who knows, maybe your video is what it takes for someone to magically find a lost demo.
    I occastionally make CPL references as a joke, like when a player has 10k, we are in the lead but he still decides to save. Most of the time that is to players who were not born yet in 2001 and have no idea what I am talking about.
    However, I do make a cpl comment about someone tryharding (not necessarily about gaming) when talking to some of my oldest friends, and they know exactly what I am talking about.

    Only think I didn’t like was the screen-tear / tv effect over some parts of the video, not sure it adds much while looking at text or graphs. Maybe some other animation or visual aid to keep eyes attentive. Very smile gripe tho, truely a step up on what was already entertaining content.
