I think the most important lesson for me is "I do this all day for about 18 hours". You want to get to Jacob's level, expect to put in the work. Sure, he's naturally talented, but those talents don't manifest out of thin air!
It takes a tremendous amount of work for anyone to get to that level, but to have perfect pitch down to the cent, and exceedingly musical parents helps.
To hear at that level, I believe being endowed with perfect pitch is an asset and really helps. therefore Hearing microtones might not be a big deal for him since he can most likely deviate from the actual pitch. hearing the amount of cents increments is unbelievable and I think even with perfect pitch that would require serious practice!!
“I suppose there are at least 24 keys to choose from.” “Okay that’ll do as a simple starting point.” “Yeah I guess we’re averaging about four chords per note here which is quite good actually. Quite a healthy number of chords.” “I have an interesting idea. I wonder if you guys would approve. I want to go to a key that doesn’t exist.” “Woah. That’s pretty tasty.”
It's so heartening to see legends like you be so open with what you do, pretention-less, and childlike; what more does a fellow musician want? This almost feels like having a one-on-one masterclass with you. Thanks a ton Jacob! Warm prayers for you always. PS: I do not know Western music. I enjoy it. I play a different kind of music, but am able to relate to your music dearly.
I don't think it's even possible to notice a 1 cent difference and you can hear in his songs that not nearly everything is perfectly tuned and he has stated that before. It gives the song organic feel. I think he guessed 61 cents just for fun
I mean you really can't hear a difference between. 60 and 61 cents. I've tested just intonation and other tuning things. I know how a perfect interval sounds and feels like.
In the past, great composers stretched the Western tonal system in various ways. Bach, Beethoven, Wagner, Ives and so on. Others tried to completely smash it. Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Boulez and so on. Right here, right now, Jacob Collier is stretching the system in an unprecedented way, creating a whole new microtonal vocabulary that will one day be fully incorporated into the Western tonal system. One day, the key of (F) half-sharp will be a utilized and fully accepted tonality.
Funny that I thought the exact same thing earlier today That microtonal stuff smells like a new revolution in western music, because Jacob doesn't think of it in a conceptual way like schoenberg would, but rather in the most human and musical way possible
I thought the same, this perspective is awesome for popular musicians. When I work in producing music now, with Jacob's work in mind, I have new tools to improve popular music arrangements, and I think, Jacob's influence in all popular musicians in the world is a big deal, we are part of a big revolution of how (specially pop music's armony) is expanding.
@@RomanNewhouse First of all of music uses semitones, you mean microtones. Second, there are more musicians that use microtones than I can ever list. Taylor Brook wrote a whole album for microtonal pianos, Virtutes Occultae, which you can find on youtube. Ben Johnston uses microtones a lot, also on youtube. One of the most famous musicians to have used microtones was Harry Partch, an american musician. I can go on? Clearly you don't know what you're talking about.
"That's quite bright, and then there's this note in it to neutralize the whole thing. It's quite strange. It's like adding cumin." Now all I can imagine is Jacob cooking something, thinking it's too flavorful, then dumping a whole container of cumin in.
I've never seen something like this play out before, the ideas are just pouring out, from where they're coming I've got no idea, at least 99% of them I could never have thought of. This is actually a master class; huge amounts of study material. Thanks for sharing.
I very much enjoyed that "healthy amount of chords per note" in the beginning and I love how you can see it in his facial expression at 12:00 that he realized that the melody was muted but continued anyway because he had an "Oh this is really nice" moment!
You are an inspiration. I told you this when I met you after the concert in Rome and you was so fantastic to dedicate me 5mins of your time, and I repeat it now. You are seriously helping me to finish what I started. I have So many original only piano or arranged music... But I still can't finish...now I feel I'm almost there, also thank to you now I am really becoming a better person, and this will allow me to go back on my works with a pure mind, just like you are. Please never, ever, ever ever take drugs once you will become more and more famous. I trust on you. You are an inspiration not only as a musician (genius) but also as a person (strength of will). Please, never ever lose yourself brother.
Damian Lillard Because he does REAL music. It goes over the heads of regular listeners. Do you think a person that is an avid Cardi B listener can comprehend him???
Will Brown I think it's more so because he doesn't use the usual pop melodies. His music catches your heart, but you remember that. Most of the time, on the radio, you're remembering the melody. It's about what's said out loud, "oh, I'm humming this song by soandso." I've been sharing Jacob Collier to so many people, but some artists use their chords in a way that makes the melody a contagion, whereas Collier makes a river, not a hook. He hooks the heart, and often times I think that's only shown where the people are around him. If I make sense, I mean to say that some artists use that addicting melody. Your family might ask, "why are you humming that all the time?" With Collier, it's on a much quieter, deeper level.
What a genius! What a workflow! As a "musician" myself and after having watched all of Jacob Collier's videos I now begin to understand how Antonio Salieri must have felt. "Grazie signore..." In all seriousness, I consider myself a happy person to live in the same era as this prodigal child. Thank you Jacob, for sharing your profound understanding of music with all of us less gifted ones.
