    I love that you reminded her she had cute backpacks at home and she didn’t need to blow her money on the new expensive backpack. I think it’s so important to teach kids to appreciate what they have and not always looking for the next new thing.

    When I was growing up my maternal grandmother would measure me, then take me shopping. We'd go to the basement of the Los Angeles Broadway store. All the craft and sewing stuff was there. She'd pick our some patterns and let me pick out material. She'd then set to work making me a new school wardrobe. In this days we couldn't wear pants. So she'd make me skirts, blouses, jumpers and dresses. Lots of dresses!!! I was the envy of all my girl classmates!!!

    I commend you for teaching your kids how to budget and let them make decisions! I personally was NOT taught how to budget until I was an adult because my parents just bought me whatever I wanted. I was an only child and it worked for my family but that's not a good way to live 😕
    So my goal is to live a frugal and minimalist life

    I've learned that you can save a lot of money if you wait to buy a lot of these at the end of September when the fall clothes, backpacks etc go on sale. Of course, this only works if you have enough from last year to get through a few weeks, but kids don't actually need a brand new backpack on day 1 if last year's bag didn't fall apart

    • @kac725
      @kac725 Рік тому +4

      Agreed, I make my kids use their back packs for 2 school years. I also buy them new shoes and supplies before school and go clothes shopping in September.

    • @seadragon1456
      @seadragon1456 Рік тому +3

      Yeah. The American culture pressures parents into buying brand new every school start.
      If your kids aren’t looking decked out in NEW clothes then you’re failing.
      I personally don’t care but I know many that care about the appearance of their children on the first 1-2 weeks of school.
      Of course children should look and smell nice (no lingering BO) but I think it’s overboard buying brand new every year.
      I buy new supplies and new shoes. Most of their clothes are in great condition and nobody would notice what’s new and what’s not.

      We live in Germany. Smaller kids are getting a backpack, which is called "Ranzen", it is super sturdy, they are wearing it for 4 years, which is elementary school in Germany. "Ranzen" are very expensive, they can cost up to 250$. You get sports bag, 2 pencil cases, big and small, sometimes even a water bottle & snackbox. The good thing is, kids are learning how to take care of their stuff and not to by everything new every year, if it is still in good condition.

    Those were the days. I love that the kids are learning how to shop by themselves as it'll help them prepare for the real world in the future.
    Here's a trick with clothes shopping: hit up the consignment stores. I went to one in my town a couple of years ago because I needed shorts, and I was able to find a pair of Merona shorts (a former Target brand that I loved) and a pair of St Johns Bay capris with drawstrings on the legs (which I removed afterwards), both in great condition, for less than $10 total. It can be hit or miss at times but it's worth doing, especially with the cost of things going up constantly.

    And no, they can't chose them completely by themselves. No special brand names, nor from tv shows, movies,....
    They have to be plain, so that way it lasts for years.
    Same for lunch boxes, pencil cases,....
    All the rest of the school supplies I buy myself.

So if they wanted more than what I could pay for example shoes, they paid the extra. They all had paper routes (again….it was the 90’s 😄) made some money and had to save half and they could spend the other half on whatever. Good job mom🌞🌞🌞🌞

    Target is expensive, I never shop there unless I have a gift card. Utilise second hand stores or thrift stores, especially for kids clothes since they outgrow them so fast. Buy a couple nice outfits new so your kids don’t feel deprived, but play clothes, jammies, and gently worn/like new school clothes can be purchased from thrift shops and your kids will still look put together and nice. I come across name brand gold quality kids clothes all the time at second hand stores because kids outgrow them so fast that parents donate them often. I don’t see much mention of thrifting on this channel, which is a shame because it’s the smartest thing a mom can do to save a buck. Even for home stuff and our own clothes as well. If you must buy brand new, buy a season ahead, so when summer stuff goes on sale in the winter you buy a size larger for the upcoming summer. Same for all seasons.
