    Hi everyone! Let me know what you think about Scan to Design in the comments below! :)

    The sketchup forum is asking for this to be brought to the iphone since many have the iphone with lidar. I hope they listen. I recommend others to comment over there if they also want it brought to the iphone.

      Agreed - I don't need full featured SketchUp on a phone, but having this on a phone to just scan something to Trimble Connect would be great

    It would be definetly amazing if #Matterport (this is a 3D virtual visit software) could make a connexion with sketchup so that you could import your 3D Mesh into sketchup and have the recognition of walls, doors, windows etc. This would ease a lot home staging for everyone

    Thanks for your video.
    Have one query... what about the accuracy of dimensions of room plan. thanks

    Hi Justin, can you please write how precise it was? E.g the real width of the walls vs the scanned widths?

      I've not pulled a tape off it, so I'm not sure. The reports I heard were that the canvas scan is more accurate than the Apple RoomPlan stuff

    I've been using the paid Canvas service for years (including their initial optical scan device you attached to the iPad) and have been using my iPhone for the past few years since LiDAR became available. The accuracy and ease of use has improved in that transition so wonder how does this version stacks up? Is it completely free now? Can you scan multiple spaces and or an entire home and have Canvas splice these together or is this intended for single spaces only? I actually found that the best practice was to scan and upload and request Chief Architect version in return as that model had the most information included (light switches, ceiling registers, etc. not seen in Sketchup model) . I'd then use the Chief Arch model as a 3D template to build over a as a from scratch working SketchUp model. (wall thicknesses, layers, etc. never that clean in Canvas to Sketchup conversion). This sounds redundant, but it still saves so many hours of in-field measurements and time drafting into the computer as well as the reduced time and inconvenience to clients. Lots of info and questions here, sorry, but really kind of a big deal in where this is going. Thanks Justin.

      Well it's free in the sense that if you have the Ipad and the Ipad version, there's not an additional cost on top of that. You can scan multiple spaces and they'll all get added to the same model. You obviously wouldn't get the Chief Architect level of detail since this is automatically generating a model. I do not know on overall accuracy compared to what you got out of Canvas before - I would ASSUME it's similar since it's still the lidar scanner and the same Canvas algorithm, but again I've not been able to test that assumption in any way

    Thanks for posting this. How is this testing out in larger spaces? I have a two-story chapel with some complex columns and tilted ceiling planes that I'd like to use this on. I just don't know if it scans as accurately in those longer distances.

    does this feature work on the iphone vertion or it has to be on ipad ?

  • @FrostArchon
    @FrostArchon 5 місяців тому +1

    I'm usually a PC/Android guy, but this feature alone makes me want to go buy an iPad! How accurate are the measurements? Can you scan interconnected rooms? Can you combine several scans together? (Aside from obviously opening 2 sketchup files and copying them into each other)

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  5 місяців тому

      Interconnected rooms yes. I've not seen specific reports re: the measurements and haven't had a chance to test yet. I do think that the larger the space you scan with interconnected rooms the more "drift" occurs, which can affect accuracy

      I am an interior designer - don’t switch - the quality of canvas is lack luster and sketch up is not good with dealing with precise scans
      Truth is all iOS lidar scan apps suffer from the hardware limitations of the lidar sensor.
      Period.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  5 місяців тому

      @@cekuhnen I'm sure this varies based on individual user needs - I know Mike Brightman has used Canvas for his work before and was happy with his results - ua-cam.com/video/4FsuAmwEKU0/v-deo.htmlsi=pk3mx49swFgI8ax_
      I've used the Iphone and Ipad Lidar scanners for space quantification and they've worked great, but I don't need accuracy to the 1/8 of an inch either. I'd ask what level of precision you're trying to achieve, because it seems a lot of folks are pretty happy with what Canvas and the scanners have done for them.

    • @cekuhnen
      @cekuhnen 5 місяців тому +1

      @@Thesketchupessentials I guess it depends on what you need. I am not negative on purpose - but I am simply speaking out of years of research and practical experience.
      I you need a rough - close enough model then yes this is fine. However if you need more details and precise positions then well not.
      Again all those apps are limited by what the LiDAR scanner can only do.

      @@cekuhnen I'm in a startup interior decoration company. We can't afford big expensive Lidar equipment and services yet, so most of our measurements are done by hand manually with laser tape measures, pictures sketches, and video references. If the iPad is good enough it will save me so much time!

    Can it scan an object and turn it to 3D model? EXP: just scan the gaming chair..

      Personally I'd use a tool like RealityScan from Epic for something like that (edited to contain the right tool name)

    Strange that it took so long to get scanning into Sketchup. What have they waited for? It should of course be possible to scan with the iphone too, as nobody will be using the ipad for the point cloud processing after the scan is done.

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  4 місяці тому

      To my knowledge, industry standard for getting stuff like this into models has been laser scanning, which SketchUp has in the Scan Essentials, but I've not seen a bunch of other 3D modeling programs that have something like this built-in. Up to this point it's all been third party apps like Polycam or Canvas. Have you been using a program with similar features built in? Saying it took "so long" feels a little unfair in my opinion.

    I wish I could do this with my iPhone. I don’t wanna have to carry an iPad around just to scan rooms.
