I saw Michael Cavanaugh as the musical performer in the Twyla Tharp creation on Broadway of “Movin’ Out”, which featured the songs of Billy Joel. Cavanaugh is a phenom. Very high, high level. Go see him if you ever get the chance. He’s magnificent.
Yeah, I made it point to see that show, this guy was great, I didn't know who he was, at first I was confused because I knew it wasn't Billy, but he was SO good.
The scholars and musicologists pronounced music dead. After many centuries, and endless twists and turns, composers had run out the combinations and permutations. They tried 12-tone and atonal, experimenting with various noise sources, perhaps culminating with John Cage's famous Four Minutes of Silence. But they were wrong. They hadn't accounted for great rock bands weaving orchestral music into the fabric of their ballads and anthems, giving music fresh energy and direction. Of course there were the Beatles and the Beach Boys. And now we hear the music of Billy Joel, written almost as a symphony in itself, taken to the next level in this brilliant performance. Centuries hence, this music will be considered a vital part of our thousand year musical heritage.
What a talent. Love his voice, and as a pianist, he's right up there with Billy Joel and Elton. Check out his Stray Cats cover of Rock this town. He is so damn good.
I'm French and a fan from the first hour of Billy Joel. I love this song that I heard in the 70'. You sing and play the piano in the spirit of the great artist that Billy is. Thanks a lot and congratulations.
Michael Cavanaugh Damn you nailed the piano solo transition into the Brenda and Eddy intro. I love the full orchestra as well. And the saxophonist is a treasure.
Just need to say again: its a blessing watching this Video, feeling the whole musicians spirit, that comes across my mobile and makes may day everytime i watch this! :))) Thank you!
Michael I bought the tickets to see you in San Antonio 6 months in advance. You blew me away with your performance. Loved every minute. The orchestra added to my enjoyment of your performance. Hope to catch you again in the near future. Thank you!!!!
Fantastic cover here. You sir? I'm sure have put a great smile on Billy Joel as well as us Boomer aged fans to Joel's greats. Absolutely fantastic. BRAVO 👏 Grazie . Arrivederci.
You are damn good. I love your presentation skills, Quite the entertainer and who does not love being entertained by an accomplished artiste. May God bless you and the fam.
Scenes is probably one of the most difficult piano pieces in the pop genre to cover perfectly and you near as nailed it - including the famous little piano riff from 2:54 to 3:04. :) I've been listening and jamming songs from The Stranger ever since it came out in 1978 and man your attention to detail is fantastic. And it seems that you were born with a voice very similar to BJ's!! Your saxophonist has apparently studied Richie Cannata, and drummer Liberty DeVitto to get the sound as authentic as possible. The orchestral backing is also great. You guys must have put a massive amount of time into getting the arrangement so perfect. Great job by all concerned.
Michael Kavanaugh, best, best job on this song! It is one of my favorite Billy Joel songs and the way you clearly sing the lyrics and play the piano is amazing. The saxophone player is awesome. Just saw you on Marco Island and it was the best show I’ve ever seen there. We will be looking up your tour dates to find out where we can come see you next!😊
One of my favorite songs - and I just discover this version now on UA-cam. Thank you, Michael! This cover is brilliant... and wow!! What a great performance! Greetings from Norway.
Very nice, man. Great covers without being an impersonation. Checked you out because my son's in the marching drum line for the United Way show tonight in Williamsport. He's also a big fan of Billy. We're really looking forward to tonight.
A great performance and stunning interpretations of Billy Joel's classics! In the UK we have a guy called Elio Pace who tours a brilliant 3 hour show playing 30+ of Billy's songs. Great that there are opportunities for us to hear BJ's music live when he doesn't tour so much these days. (www.eliopace.com)

This isn't just great, no no. This, This is absolutely fantastic. This is going to sound a bit strange, I do realize this. But please just bare with me here. His cover sounds like its not just a cover of Billy Joels song. It feels like a pianist with a touch of punk rock doing a cover of the one & only Sir Elton John doing a cover of Scenes From An Italian Restaurant by the one & Only Billy Joel. And IN MY OPINION that is something beyond extraordinary. WELL DONE. VERY WELL DONE GOOD SIR!!!!
