Ubisoft is one of the biggest game publishers on earth, but despite its success, it seems incapable of making a game rated 10/10. We explore why this might be the case, the strengths and weaknesses of the company, and how it might be able to score itself that illusive score.

Gotta have a cell phone to do it.... no. Gotta have a cell phone to wipe your ass you blow your nose. Google got you ALL by the balls. Good luck getting off that ride.
They could easily get a 10/10 of they _FUCKING_ made Rayman 4.
And not fuck it up
I just want a stable port of Rayman 2
if*
@@yaltschuler I know what I wrote.
didnt the guy who led the mario+rabbid games go out on record saying he wanted to make a rayman game?
The thing I hate the most about ubisoft, is there are times where they show real effort and a solid foundation to their games. But, they end up bringing it down for some reason. The best example of this is wildlands and breakpoint.
Mainly curious since I haven't played them but can you elaborate on what parts show the effort, passion and talent behind those games and what brings them down to mediocrity?
@@sozius0 Ok, speaking on wildlands the game world is beautiful from barren deserts and to lush forrest it's world is very well done. However, the missions of the world extremely uninteresting and rather boring. There's a pretty wide range of ways to approach missions, for example if you enter a base at night a majority of guards will be asleep. However, every base or location looks the same or works the same and the enemies of the base will always respawn removing the need to take down bases. There is no variety to the enemies in the base game, however they do add enemy variety in the dlc. As for breakpoint take everything good about wildlands and remove it and make it a crappy version of division.
They took down R6 Nightmaps, they get what they deserve :Cb
Heroes might and magic also
I hate homm5 ending
Like the part 1 and dlc story are good but the llast part and ending looks rushed and bad
And then homm6 and 7 are horrible and dont exist to comunity standards and you can see that cuz we play homm3 and homm5 rather than 6 and 7
Hyper Scape was okay
I have a friend that works at Ubisoft on a dev team for r6, so here's some shit ubisoft won't outloud: they don't hire anyone, and have far too high expectations to meet their unrealistic deadlines. They fired like six r6 teammates like five years ago, never re-hired anyone, and expected the team to be FASTER. My friend was pissed, and since last I talked to him, I'm almost certain he quit and moved on to another studio. It's yet another one of a dozen examples of management sharting all over a studio.
The problem with Ubisoft's Post launch support is that either they drop their promises like in R6 Extraction or they release patches that don't make any sense.
Like in Siege some patches feel like they don't even play their own game and don't get me started on the balancing of For Honor.
Honestly. I think that's why I stop playing for honor after 2 or 3 months. Once they start making bad changes and uninstalled and didn't look back. Besides the Crew Motorfest which I barely play, the last ubi game I played was Ghost Recon Breakpoint which was terrible and hurting GR brand. Not releasing updates to bad decision on updates Ubisoft just at a huge low.
I had to rewind the video when they used R6S as an example of good support...
The discourse in the community right now is mostly "cheating is worse than ever, anti cheat doesn't work, Ubisoft doesn't care"
As a person who played For Honor until 2 years ago. This hurts a lot.
So much potential being wasted.
@@dustrockblues7567 I was low-key expecting them to mention Operation Health specifically which was a giant meme, as a good example LOL
Then you have AC Valhalla that got so much post launch content to the point where the amount of content available at once is overwhelming for new players.
I appreciate this video. Always thought it was unfair for people to call Ubisoft the worst publisher when EA and Activision are way more deserving of that crown.
I really don't know how people see them as the worst when they've been consistently mid for about a decade
@@badasscrusader Comments under this video explain a lot. Ubisoft couldn't evolve AC further in the same direction, so they changed it. Thus old-school fans started to dislike the company and play to hate the next Ubisoft games. As we all know negative opinions share faster and more In society and on social media, than positive ones.
Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends were peak Ubisoft. They're on the downhill slide now.
nonono, peak Ubisoft was Ubisoft until 2010 were they just didn't miss (outsides of Rabbits).
Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends are just the suckerpunch out of nowhere that gives us the illusion of hope that somewhere in Ubisoft quality development still exists.
Whenever AC2 dropped all the way through the day AC Unity dropped was the peak for me. AC Unity could have been great.
@@MrTripleM3 Child of Light released the same year. 2014 marked the end of ubisoft in my eyes.
Ubisoft is that weird publisher where sometimes they embrace their inner corpo like ea/activi$ion, but other times they actually let some games be real games that are fun (recent prince of persia is a good example). It's confusing, like if you're gonna abuse me at least be consistent
I wish you talked about how Ubisoft has slowly stopped supporting the online for certain games to the point where it’s unplayable *cough* Uno *cough AC Unity
The LEAST they could do to diss the company anymore.
Still sad that Hyper Scape got killed since you mentioned titanfall in the first half. Though it was a BR it still was really fun and worth it for the weapon animations alone.
Yeah, it was a kind o Proto-Finals in my Opinion.
@@vinncentuntiedt5851 that one and Bloodhunt were the best Battle Royales, no 30 minute looting just to die from a sniper 2000m away
It felt like a half assed apex legends in my opinion
@@totallegend2480 i think the mechanics were very diffrent from apex, dont remember a lot about it though.
I did some googling after being surprised about the Notre Dame thing, but turns out, while Ubisoft COULD have given their 3D render as a blueprint, they did make multiple changes to the interior to facilitate parkour and assassinations, which the real building wouldn't have had. Plus many of the sculpted artworks are actually IP protected, so none of the wall sculptures in the game (which aren't even 3d for optimization purposes) would have helped for restorations.
Still, its amazing to think Ubisoft's map design is so well done it could have truly been useful in restoring such a priceless piece of human culture (if they stuck to the original, anyway). Also they donated half a million towards the restoration efforts so thats something
edit: hold on that time travel assassin-assassinator idea actually sounds absolutely amazing. Let Ubi hear of this
This basically means that Notre Dame is now more parkour-friendly, right?
@@xiii.5331 unfortunately they preferred the old original so that assassins won't be able to run around freely in there
But didn't they also make another more realistic model for education stuff?
Dude, they scanned the Notre Dam, meaning they obviously had a model of the original interior as well...
So the reason ubsoft is so successful is the reason fast food works: consistency over quality.
... the new game that just got announced; kingmakers... IS THAT YOU, SWAG?
I have to say that the moment at 5:18 caught me so off-guard hahaha. Amazing video guys.
please stop recommending me this video it wont go away
For honor was so good back in the day, queuing in Australia even during prime time just gave me no games last I played tho. Damn shame
A goodSplinter cell game is due by now
3:33 it sounds like a ai or something
Doc Oc's Quote from Spider-Man 2: "Brilliant but Lazy." Badically describes Ubisoft.
Got a skull and bone ad before the video.
Left 4 Dead has a bunch of spiritual successors! Wtf?!
*ROCK AND STONE!*
B+ is above average in Kangaroo Land. C is the average grade for Australian high school students. Source: me, former Australian high school student.
On more technical issues, I heard that over the years old devs left Ubisoft and new ones aren’t experienced/trained enough to work with what older teams left for them. So new devs have to learn from the beginning on their own which creates issues. It is more of time question as new devs will eventually get better but it can explain some issues with their games
Came back to for honor after years I was shocked to see that it had gotten new updates and was still getting new content
Yeah, making all the heroes have the same moveset. Yay…
My favorite Ubisoft game is the one where I have to go to all the towers, complete all the checkpoints, engage with a lengthy crafting system, and upgrade items in the big open world as I complete every shiny thing on the mini map to complete it.
What’s the clip at 14:24 from?
IN A CAVE! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!
lol
If Ubisoft was employee owned and huge chunk of profits went to workers you would be seeing Sony quality games even rock star quality games
What the hell! SWAG. The time travel game idea sounds so freaking fun! Haha I hope they actually are listening!
Ubisoft is the illumination of gaming ❤😂
Rwby doesn't have any games that are above "fine"... who can imagine if Ubisoft got the rights to use Rwby's IP and made a Left 4 Dead style shooter where you play as various teams (RWBY, ORNJ, RNBW, Ace Ops, even Ozpin's inner circle or a flashback for STRQ) and mow through hordes of Grimm save civilians?
Rainbow six could be bigger than Valorant and CS reunited but yeah Ubisoft aren't good enough.
It's hilarious to see them try to make the infestation dlc of siege into new game due to greed and fail
Ubisoft used to be great and innovative with games like Rainbow 6: Vegas 2.
MBT rolling in medieval Europe? YES!
I hope SirSwag is enjoying the new OW season
Can the swag team through up an Apex video? I'm curious their thoughts on season 20 and all the updates
Ubisoft games feels like it’s made by devs that don’t care about their own game and hate their job.
You only mentioned For Honor for a second but as a long term player of it, it’s an extremely well documented example of Ubisoft falling short. They copyrighted the fighting system, yet because of the bad launch of the game execs essentially gave up on it and barely fund the dev team. As a result, one of Ubi’s and arguably one of gaming as a whole’s most unique titles has been squandered for 7 years. The community & devs are extremely dedicated and it’s very polished now, but oh no it doesn’t have a million active players so Ubi just drops it on its head
one of gaming's most unique titles? astronomical levels of copuim lmao
@@lordofyggdrasil9633 Okay, in that case please mention a game with a similar combat system. The only example i can think of is Absolver, and even then their systems are worlds apart. Out of all fighting games it is probably the most faithful to medieval combat
8:05 "Considering Activision is literally turning planned dlc into full priced games I think Ubisoft might actually have a shot"
Assasins Creed Mirage would like to have a word with you.
I remember after the WD1 downgrade controversy, ubi went on record saying they spent extra time fleshing out and polishing WD2. And it definitely shows cause WD2 was a damn good game. I know ubi has it in them to make great games, but unfortunately cause of investors and higher ups all they can do is produce “good enough” titles. They don’t sit with a title in development long enough to make it feel unique and fun. When they keep getting ordered to “make the map bigger” or “extend the game time” it very quickly turns into soulless content that’s just shoehorned to meet a quota. I feel bad for the devs that WANT to make great games at Ubisoft. At the end of the day, as long as ubi has proof of concept of something they’re developing they can keep getting investors to invest. They’re a company that doesn’t succeed cause they dont know how, it’s more cause they just don’t want to.
I absolutely love Black Flag
"never falling to truly bad" This is a statement I and many others STRONGLY disagree with.
ubisoft is the personification of the word "mediocre"
The biggest tragedy to me is the fate of ghost recon. I LOVED GRAW 1 and 2, gritty, grounded stealth games deserving of the Tom Clancy label, and then we get Wildlands which is just Far Cry 5 in third person. And far cry itself has just gone down to more of an arcade shooter in my opinion, I miss breaking my own fingers back into place instead of using health packs man.
got a skull&bones ad before this video. _nice_
Having played Skull and Bones and seeing how much Ubisoft put love into the game it deserves a 10 - life prison sentence
They like to appeal to everyone in turn appealing to no one.
18:54 I'll Rock and Stone to that brother!
DID I HEAR A ROCK AND STONE!
One of the biggest missed opportunities in the industry is the fact that we dont have al least on recent times a Tom Clancy game with a mature , character rich story . so much things to do with different types of games (rts , fps , flight arcade games ,etc) and yeah i know that exists somehow with endwar , ghost recom hawx but the fact that there isnt a joint universe of games set on Tom Clancy and that the story, setting is not a mayor point of it , just sucks.
Ive been saying for so many years that Ubisoft could've broken into the survival scene with The Division 1. That games has one of the most immersive and beautifully bleak setting & game world, its the perfect canvas for a Survival game set in a concrete jungle. That was actually the original design for Division 1 you know? A tactical 3rd personal survival shooter. That couldve been a 10/10 imo, the main thing Div1 suffered from other than a rocky launch was the Live service model & the combat; Super bullet sponges are the most dull & boring thing in a shooter. Anyways, if Ubisoft can go back to the Div 1 map, and make an immersive open world survival game based around the time of Div 1, they would have their 9-10 rated game imo.
Ubi has mastered mediocrity
Brodi, just found your channel today. Love your content man, especially the news without bs, best stuff man, opens my eyes to the truth. Thank you!!
Implying For Honor is better now than it was at year 3 is just absolute chaos, Swag
Do jack cooper meets apex ai
Might and magic franchise needs to return
Ubisoft exists to pump out shovelware games.
Honestly the only problem i have with Skull and bones, having played the beta, is the pricetag. If it is to be a live servoce game with update after update and ingame purchases you should just make the base game cost like 40 bucks. I mean youre still gonna ruin my wallet with piratehats and outfits for my lemur so just do it over time instead. You may now hit me over the head with a comedically oversized mallet.
hate what they did to For Honor
Based
I actually enjoy their games even the recent ones.
Sometimes formulaic is fine🤷🏻♂️
They need to make a few new games and specifically forbid microtransaction mechanics, which unfortunately they are reverse engineered around and as a result ruin every game they make.
They are like the McDonalds of the industry.
Drat. Now I wanna time travel gorrila time war. In time
Ubisoft is as big as an ocean. But deep as a puddle.
Beautiful presentation, and great hype to lackluster and underwhelming final products.
To fix Ubisoft I think the Johnny Silverhand method could do the trick (maybe evacuate first)
I think they do NOT need to made an open world survival game, it's the death of too many game developers and it's a very unfocused genre. I think they could make a very focused offshoot of it, like a semi-open world sandbox like MGSV and they're already very close with the far cry series to creating something like that. They just need an insanely strong artistic flair and cinematic directing in a slightly more distant and interesting world and they could create a spiritual successor to MGSV that has online interactive features for more engagement.
Ubi needs to give me back Heroes of Might and Magic and EA needs to give me Command and Conquer
R6:S is up there with the highest gaming league. If they get hold the Star Wars Genre, Disney might get sold to Ubi.
If we're talking niches they could exploit, how about arcade racing games. Their only offerings at the moment are hyper-competetive time trial racing in Trackmania and Forza Horizon copycat in The Crew. So many racing game fans dearly miss franchises like Burnout, Motorstorm, or Split/Second, and no one is trying to fill that void. I can't recall any recent racing games where when you mess up and crash your car violently explodes and then you respawn and continue the race. Everything nowadays is simcade racing where you drive licensed cars and when you hit a wall at 200 mph your car bounces off and has scratched paint.
I like Ubisoft games. They aren't 10/10 games but I enjoy them just as much. People criticize people like me but they are lying if they say they only enjoy 9's and 10's. Great video!
I feel like no mention of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (other than a 5 second clip) is a diservice to how great that game is and runs counter to the point you're trying to make in this video. Otherwise, it's a great video, though. They really do have the potential to score 10s with PoP being a perfect example they just seemingly choose not to.
"The current state of AAA, as well as the MMO wave, and the 90's multiplayer shooter exploitation were all part of the same pattern: The money men eternally searching for a guranteed formula for success. But they will never find one, or rather, never realize that the formula already exists. You know how you guarantee success? You produce an original product that's well made and reasonably priced. It's as simple as that. But they will never take that to heart because coming up with good ideas requires creativity, and investing in them requires willingness to take a risk. And the money machine is capable of neither."
-Ben "Yhatzee" Croshaw, 2023
The division/ 2 was their pve survival game was it not?
If Ubisoft really wanted to try they could've got a 10 long ago, or at the vert least a notable game. But they work like fast food franchise.
Watch Dogs 2 to this day is their best open world game. But that wad 8 years ago.
Because not enough people played Prince Of Persia The Lost Crown. I don't think that's a 10 (for me it's a 9), but someone would surely give it one.
ROCK AND STONE!
at 7:20 you said "play" when you meant to say "pay"
Have you heard of the UA-camr Accursed Farms? Hes planing on sueing game companies for stealing peoples games. It seems like something you could put into your monthly news
Dj Peach Cobbler talked about Ubisoft that has valid criticism just like this video.
For Honor mentioned WE MADE IT
BROOO IMAGINE A UBISOFT SKYRIM
i would play that skyrim was already shit on top and i doubt ubisoft could fix that but it could give it a much better base
For honor is still Alive?!?
Alive and well enough
Yeah all fun and game until you have to pay for cosmetic and “time saver” to get more resources in that survival game
The idea of modern tech disguised as a magic staff is awesome, give me my mythologically disguised Clarketech!!
It's like the opposite of when Timmy Turner wishes for things and goes "uhh internet" when asked how he got it :D
(And yes I know Assassin's Creed already has mythologically disguised Clarketech, or rather, tech that built the mythology, in the form of the Precursor artifacts, but I'm thinking modern tech, maybe with some few Precursor-originated features, looking like magic because the year is 793 or something).
Yeah I never play Tom Clancy titled games for plot
Division 2 and breakpoint are goated though
Not as stories but just as fun games
They have genuine talent and creativity, but the management is dead weight. Simultaneously bullheaded enough to trend chase and incompetent enough to execute the bad ideas poorly enough it lets potential shine through in spite of it.
Start doing mocap for ac again.
Ipsos Isay have not had an examination for me since my first run. so, yeah. no profit.
Look, a company, especially huge multinationals, can have some really shit departments and some really good ones. The customer support and user experience guys might be aiming for that 100%... but the rest of the teams could just be coasting along without real incentive to hit the same bar. Sadly this is many large game companies now and why smaller ones (or small totally enclosed groups in a larger company) often do a better job.
Uh where's the tts
they haven't dropped child of light 2 end of video
Bro skip the ad section
No not on this channel
I wouldn't compliment Ubisoft for continuing development/support for online games such as For Honor and Siege, seeing how it feels like both games got downgraded over it's post launch development, and the content we get nowadays for either games are either reused lazy garbage, completely out of touch or drip fed to us.
“Largest gaming company in Europe”
Rockstar, proudly Scottish.
Id play the shit out of time travel assassins
I think because their the Scuderia Ferrari F1 Team of gaming company
I have to disagree. A satisfying narrative always makes a game better. Take the best survival crafting game ever made for an example. Subnautica starts out with "You're stranded lol, good luck not getting eaten scrub." and moves into "Oh hey, someone is coming to pick you up, because of course they are, you where on a capitol ship of a space-faring race. They know you crashed" and then moves to "You're infected with a ridiculous disease that will kill you and all life on this planet if you don't cure it (and also you won't be allowed to leave)". The narrative in Subnautica isn't REQUIRED to make the game fun, but it sure as shit makes it way more interesting than something like Valheim where it's just "you died, now fight all these things to prove yourself worthy of Valhalla".
I got bored grinding Valheim resources after 60 hours, I didn't get bored on Subnautica until I had finished my third sea base and had to craft a massive rocket to get off the planet.
Its a business move. Put in 60% of the work to get 80% score. Not worth to score 100% and ruin profit margins.
Maybe a good way to monetize is selling social-gameplay consumables. For example a consumable ball that rains momey that players flock to, dancing taunts like kazotsky kick from TF2, consumable public events and consumable duel invites
These games are incredibly socially driven and capturing that could lead to more ethical and more fun manner of supporting the game. As these systems rely on being interesting and fun experience
Instead of spending 70$ for 3 skin recolors
If they just make an Assassin's Creed Odyssey 2, they would once again be the best gaming company of all time
Ubisoft has released 10/10 games, they just haven't in the past two decades. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory immediately comes to mind.
