  • In this fourth and final episode of gem mining in North Carolina, we head to the Little Pine Garnet Mine in the beautiful Smoky Mountains.
    This is a historic location that is open to the public for mining and finding your own crystals. We share our experience and our techniques on how to recover many beautiful gem garnets. This is a beautiful location that is family friendly and very rewarding to the rockhound.

    My last trip there about 10 years ago my son and I dug one from the lower wall inside the mine, it was bitter than your fist.

    Awesome finds! The creek water was much higer when I was ther last May. Maybe there was some heavy rains just before.

      The area did see a lot of rain last spring. I bet it washed some goodies out the tailings. ⛏

    Years ago I got some garnets from NC.
    Though I bought mine, so certainly not quite the fun y'all had. Lol.
    But after I tumbled them they brightened up great. Nice maroon color.

    Did you fix the stream where you made the dams and mudholes?

      I appreciate your concern for the land.
      I agree, it seems against mining etiquette to use streams for washing. At this location though it is part of the process and there are dirt settling spots further downstream. We did our best to fill holes and restore the flow. And the next storm usually rearranges the creek as well. ✌️

    That's cool you're in North Carolina my neck of the woods around Madison if I'm not mistaken now I'm an Arkansas. Sometime and do a little dig or some prospecting. Do you live in Mount Ida I lived up there for a while now I'm done in Hot springs I haven't found any places down here to dig but Mount Ida is always choice.       We used a pick and shovel to work through the soil, a bucket to transport the material and screens to work the material in the creek.
