@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 I like the smaller tubes (6922), can buy nice gold lions for less than 6sn7 alternative. Was looking forward to your review
Yeah the 6922 i have are The Gold Pin JJ Their actually the equivalents ECC88 but these are to be used in volt stage not output stage but with 6H6P geez the Pre gets much sweeter and more smooth
@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 Well, Jason Stoddard says on Head-fi that they're being phased out because they did not sell. I want to pick one up because ol the good closeout prices, but I need to know how profoundly the unit responds to Tube rolling before.
Thanks for sharing the video. Even though I don't own the Noval, I had a feeling that sound wise it is probably close to that of Valhalla 2 (both use 6n1p or 6dj8 equivalent as the gain stage) . I own Valhalla 2 and I do not like the 6n1p tube that came with the amp as it was to bright to my taste. I did quite a bit of tubes rolling and found a tube that "transform" my Valhalla. It is 6N23P, a Russian version of 6dj8, 6922. Mine are made by Reflector in 1971. With 6n23p, the highs are much more subdued (but still has excellent extentions and details) and a great sub-base that makes music enjoyable especially for the classical. I own several pairs of 6n23p. Many consider the close plate version of 6n23p (i.e. silver shield) made in 1973 the holy grail of 6dj8, 6922. But in my experience, the standard version of early to mid 70s Reflector 6n23p is almost indistinguishable to the close plate version. Anyway, there are tons of tubes that can be used for this preamp. 6n23p is certainly one of my favorites.
I might have to start looking at the preamp option for getting into tubes, you can still get that "warm" tubey sound with them and if you do any tube rolling the voltage of the new tubes going in to the preamp do not have to match the voltage of the tubes that are already in the preamp so long as the new tubes going in them selves match each other.
I can’t help but notice the beautiful wooden bases you have under the components. Are they cutting boards? Might you share where one could get these? They really set off the components!
I bought 4 of them from Walmart for about 25 bucks each but they no longer sale them here is an ebay link to what I have but dam they want alot on ebay ! But the dac board i had special made out of 5 different woods - But with boards i just put cheap rubber feet underneath to help with Vibrations rubber is rubber 😆
Thanks a bunch. I scored one on eBay for $15 +5 for shipping! I just got my Freya Noval. I love the sound with the stock tubes. They do get hot, hence the board. I did purchase the 6H6P/ECC88 tubes based on your recommendation. Been wondering whether using adapters would work to place 4 6SN7s since their heater current is .6 amps? BTW, Happy New Year!

@@tee-jaythestereo-bargainph2120 I have one. It is awesome. And I am using the Pioneer Elite SX N30 as a pre-amp. I originally bought the parasound 200 pre amp. I just bought this preamp with tubes for $599 on clearance at Schiit. They have 7 left (US 115v) I have been looking at the ➕️ but was hoping for a price drop. It's my first dive into tubes so I wanted something nice but didn't want to go broke. It seems to me the "N"is the better option as far as tube selection and possibly availability than the ➕️. I plan on running it balanced out of my RME Adi 2 dac. I love the dac as a preamp, but it would be cool to color up the sound sometimes for a little change in tone. I love the musical sound of old school tubes, I'm hoping to capture a bit of that. Love your reviews, haven't watched in a while.
No it doesn't have the ole skool sound - Its Antlitickle sounding fast snappy Accurate but but with stock tubes !! The 6922 by JJ gold pin for volt stage And 6H6P soviet for output stage really calms this Pre amp down alot ! Gets you closer to musical and less reveling
