2:28 but Mumbo, we *wanted* a movie about Minecraft that was taken seriously. I think that’s the huge disconnect between the makers of the movie and the audience. The average age of a Minecraft player is 24 (according to Mojang in an article written in April) and they’ve made a movie that has a visual (and let’s face it, most likely humour) style made to appeal to a *much* younger audience. That sheep is pure troll bait and they had to have known that. They really had to.

Yes, we as adults want a serious movie, but I don't think that this is a disconnect between the audience and the makers, since we are not the target audience. The audience is the much more numerous ammount of children that are playing the game but they are less vocal on the internet.
@@qwinlyn I do like your story Ideas, but I don't think they would have worked for marketing, since they are very specific, so that minecraft nerds would love to get more insight for these topics, but for attracting a larger audience (even some who haven't played the game) a more broad concept seems more fitting. (for example for a movie about the Pillagers, it wouldn't be so fitting to include the iconic Creepers, since Creepers are not hostile towards Pillagers. But creapers are important for marketing)
I won't lie I wish I could have the same level of optimism, but I feel like the writing of the movie is going to be extremely insincere and insecure about itself

@hitmoh Definitely an interesting idea, would be difficult to pull off with the minecraft art style but would be enjoyable if done right. Honestly though, I've realised that some games are just meant to stay as games and don't need to be movies or TV shows
I wish they're just committed to CGI. Start with characters in the real world as real people, and when they arrive in Minecraft, they should swap to Minecraft body types, and definitely freak out about it. I didnt come up with this comment but I thought it was a good idea!
Nonono. It DOES look that bad. It looks AI generated. The copium people are sniffing is insane. I understand wanting to be positive but they will continue to make slop like this if y'all consooooooom product and get excited for next product.
@@McCaroni_Sup look, the art is divisive, I personally am not sure where I stand on it yet, but it's not as important as the story, and here it just seems like 'we got trapped in the game so we need to get out', uncreative, basic, boring.
First, the real people green screened onto an obviously CGI set is insanely jarring. The CGI itself, while it certainty took skill to make, lacks original/artistic style in my eyes. It looks like the same mass produced graphics I've seen a hundred times, so I certainly think they could have done something way more unique with minecraft's graphics. Frankly, everything about this movie feels like it's just another quick project to make some money off of a well-recognized IP
Honestly, Minecraft fits better with that than any other game, but it's been done to death so no one wants to watch it anymore. Sometimes the player dreamed it was other things, in other places. Sometimes these dreams were disturbing. My main concern is a lot of it being just surface-level stuff instead of being more contemplative, like how the actual game is. "Sometimes the player dreamed it was a miner, on the surface of a world that was flat and infinite. The sun was a square of white, the days were short, there was much to do, and death was only a temporary inconvenience."
I see a lot of people wishing they leaned in heavier on the cgi, but I sort of feel like I would have preferred more practical effects. The saturation looks really wacky next to the real people
@@OdinOnFire what’s ironic is that a LOT of it was practical, there’s tons of bts stuff where it has painted backgrounds, real physical blocks and trees, etc. I think it’s a lighting / compositing thing that makes the people look so out of place

the thing is that gets me is that the style isn't even all that bad like the ghast and piglins for example look amazing but it's the fact they insisted on slapping actual human actors into the mixture that really throws it all off. they do not blend well at all which isn't helped by how so many of the shots just look like they're on a greenscreen which! i know is a case for a lot of movies but it isn't supposed to look as obvious as that 😭i can't understand for the life of me why the went down this direction
Idk why NO ONE is talking about the fact that the environment they're in doesn't look like actual minecraft-y terrain... Like it's, vaguely blocky, but it doesn't look like it could've been generated in the game
also minecraft terraqin generation is ugly and random honestly id be pretty mad if they did those random spikes sticking up out of the ground, but a random floating island or 2 would be pretty cool
Im glad someone else finally said it, it does NOT look like actual minecraft terrain just because its blocky shaped, theres no grid based placement until its convenient for the plot.
Everthing is in blocks but it looks totally weird that they made huge blocks out of it too. Totally against what Minecraft generation tries to achieve.

Bless your optimism, Mumbo. I hope this movie is everything you're hoping for.
My biggest issue is that it seems to be a standard "real people get transported into a fictional world" movie, which always feels a little lazy when adapting a video game or cartoon IP into live-action. But honestly, I don't know how else you'd adapt Minecraft to live action. ... maybe it should have been an animated film.

Animated or live doesn't matter. Jack black is basically as expressive as a cartoon character. That's not what is going to make this movie shit. The disney remakes are shit because they changed the script not because they are live action. I actually quite enjoyed the jungle book. What they did with scale really brought in the horror of the jungle for a human child. And king louis' song was still good. They kept the song. But then they decided they had to make changes for the other films. If people are commenting everywhere that it should be animated they're not going to fix what's actually trash in the production. Who killed roger rabit and those animated x live combos were really well mixed. It's possible to do this well but i basically have zero hope for this thing because it's a script that bounced around for 10 years and is guaranteed to have gone through the hands of every bottom of the barrel writer in Hollywood...
@@SquintyGearsI feel like as a society we need to band together like we did for the sonic movie to make changes to the animation. As far as I'm aware, the only person in the cast who feels gimmicky is Jason Momoa and probably Jennifer Coolidge. Jack Black and Steve Carrell are genuinely good A-list comedic actors, and the other ones aren't super popular celebrities as far as I'm aware.
I lost all faith in this film when Rob McElhenney left the project and it got retooled into live-action. This doesn’t feel like a film that’s made for people with a rich, long-time connection to the game, rather that it really just wants to make your uncle laugh because he’s heard of a Creeper before.

Fictional stories are fictional, they don't have to be entirely realistic but its all tools to tell a good story. What makes a story a good story is a lesson to learn from. Humans absorb lessons more from fictional stories than raw lessons told to them. It's how for centuries we evolved, how we kept our knowledge for future generations. You just embarrass yourself. Also Minecraft fans create themselves plenty of Minecraft jokes everyday. They really don't want to see them in Minecraft movie. The End Poem itself in Minecraft is a lesson about enjoying every little thing, every little second you have in real life because Minecraft won't ever run away from you but your real life will.

Honestly, I'm not too hyped about this. I think going for a live action instead of a fully 3D film isn't the best option, specially seeing how everything seems to struggle to feel "real". I believe they chose this only because they wanted to have the faces of Jack Black and Jason Momoa (or whoever they could get, really) on screen believing this would draw people in. And I strongly disagree with that decision. Jack Black voices Bowser on the Super Mario film and it's amazing even though you don't see his face. It actually feels like Bowser. Here... I don't see Steve at all. I'm sorry, I love Jack, he's one of my favourite actors and I bet that he's going to be fenomenal, but when he appears on the trailer I only see him, not Steve. I feel like they didn't even try to characterize him. It looks like they just put a blue shirt on him and said "okay, that's enough, we want people to see Jack Black". He's overshadowing his own character, and that's almost always a bad thing. And, again, I say this even though I love him as an actor. I love how in the Jumanji movies he plays other people so hard you basicaly feel like you're watching someone else inside his body, which is the whole point of those films. He's amazing. But here I can't see anyone else. He says "I'm Steve" but my mind can only think "no, you're Jack Black". It may end up being a good film, that's hard to say at this point. I'd be glad to see it succeed and I'd like to watch it and love it. For now, however, I'm skeptical. I'm not going to say it will be a disaster, but I'm not hoping in on the hype train either.
I don't think a comedy was ever going to be right for a movie where minecraft is the subject, Minecraft is too slow and contemplative to work as a comedy without coming off like a middle aged man trying to use slang he heard on Tiktok
“Right” is subjective, this was probably the goal for the movie bc this appeals to people that haven’t played Minecraft or don’t play Minecraft regularly, even though it isn’t as attractive to veteran players.
The v neck and turtal neck i think is a call back to when the community was devided in wich shirt the original steve was wearing. So i think they just used both to appeal to both sides lol
My greatest fear is that this movie isnt going to even be fun bad aside from the designs. I expect the movie itself to be thoroughly boring and uncomfortable to sit through
The designs... do not look fun. They look like Sonic with Teeth super-realistic uncanny valley, honestly seems like its going to be a flop of a movie with the choices its gone for to me.
@@Thomas-sg4izthe one with the rock was at least nice to watch with friends, laugh at the stupid jokes, and turn your brains off. this film, and perhaps i say this because it strayed so far from what i expected and hoped for, but i do not expect it to have that charm. just a boring uninspired carbon copy childrens film set in the minecraft universe
Mumbo's done a really good job at highlighting the positives of this trailer. I honestly fixated so much on the negatives I forgot to appreciate the details.
As long as they stay like Goofy an silly an not take the thing seriously then it be good. Now if they try an be serious it want be good. Sharknado was a goofy movie a. Sk probly want take thing seriously that the only way to do this kinda of movie just make a dumb goofy movie that just funny an fun to watch
I can understand where your opinion comes from. The people making this movie truly worked hard, but if your goal is to have a drink, filling a well with a spoon is not the way to do it. The difficulty of the task shouldn't act as a justification for a bad result, especially when the difficulty is artificially induced. Just as an olympic runner who shoots himself in the leg is not deserving of any award.
I like the stylistic choices they've made, the world looks interesting enough, the ridiculous looking mobs definitely fit the tone they're going for, but the live action people really look out of place and kill the immersion because it makes everything else look very obviously green screened
It looks like a children's movie that will be very popular with that specific demographic (7-10 year olds). Like the movie's going to make bank, but most older minecraft fans probably won't enjoy it since they aren't the target audience
I'm split on this. One the one hand, yes it is the minecraft movie, yes parents will buy their kids tickets because they want to see the minecraft movie, and thus the movie will bring in truckloads of cash. But at the same time, will they actually enjoy it? I don't think so. Some small moments like seeing certain mobs on the big screen, maybe, but they will leave the movie theatre either disappointed by the product or mixed. Think about how kids with an enthousiasm for dinosaurs react to an inaccurate drawing of a stegosaurus, or someone calling a pterodactyl a dinosaur. Yes kids are inexperienced, but they are not stupid. They are some of paleo-art's biggest critics, because dinosaur facts are quite literally almost all they know. Now imagine a kid with that same level of enthousiasm but for minecraft looking at this movie. They would hate it.
The thing is that you can make a real and genuine kids movie. Ghibli, or earlier Disney movies. Avatar (the original show). Things that kids and adults can find profound.
Finally someone who likes this! I didn't really have any expectations and was pleasantly surprised (for the same reasons you mentioned) when I watched the trailer, which made me sad when I saw that everyone on the internet felt disappointed...
I actively had bad expectations yet somehow the trailer still disappointed me. Sorry, but live-action is already a non-starter. Follow that up with the "stuck in a video game" plot and yet another Jack Black being Jack Black movie, and I couldn't even finish the trailer in one sitting.
What I don't like is that the trailer does not lead with the story. It doesn't look like it has a coherent vision, instead you get this assortment of random sequences. The characters don't look like they fit in or were thought through at all. I couldn't care less about the animation style, I think all the graphics and textures are perfectly fine. That's not what I am concerned about.
I do agree the trailer feels like a random assortment of clips, almost like a short montage. I think they could have set the tone better, as these absurd moments don’t match the fairly ‘vanilla’ trailer style.
I think teaser trailers are generally to get the vibe across and create intrigue. the official trailer is usually when the story is elaborated on. While it may not be in a good way, the trailer has certainly made me intrigued. I love the look of the sheep and actually like the world alot, but the live action people shoved in looks so bad and unnatural to me. There are so many ways this could be a train wreck, but I'm optimistic. At best I think it will be so bad it's incredible just due to pure entertainment.
Napoleon dynamite was its own content. This is a live action version of a voxel game. It's no doubt they're making it a movie because its the most popular game in the world, which makes it feel like a money grab more than anything. Honestly, they'd have had a better time if they just stuck with a fully animated movie.
I think my problem with this movie is just, this isn’t how I imagine Minecraft. They are leaning fully into the goofy aspects of Minecraft while I imagine a more beautiful and generally simple story.
Honestly I didn't think of this but you're so right. There's definitely a world where they get the camp just right. I don't think what they've shown here really demoes that though. Who knows what the final product will be...
My biggest problem with the movie is how the characters (The people) look. They look like they were put in after the movie was made. They look out of place from the whole movie. It’s like they wanted to go with realism and animation but couldn’t figure out how to incorporate both in a smooth way. Another person said this and I couldn’t agree with it more. It looks like this is a Minecraft live video.

The choice of live action is... the oddest to me though. I can see the story hook with it, but as of now they dont seem to quite fit in visually.
The biggest concern I've seen by what they've shown in the trailer is that every single bit of humor they've written into the script is going to have the punchline "haha isn't Minecraft so WEIRD?" "Floating blocks? Isn't that so WEIRD?" "Ugly sheep? Isn't that so WEIRD?" "Punching trees? Isn't that so WEIRD?" That's not a punchline. That's just an observation, which is not a punchline - unless you think that the observation, and thus the target of said observation, is ITSELF a joke. It's The Big Bang Theory guide to comedy, but now in Minecraft form.
"There's a *slight* disconnect there." If that's what constitutes slight my eyeballs might just evacuate my head if they're ever unfortunate enough to see what JARRINGLY BAD looks like.

@@Voxalyst off the top of my head?
- the story of the first builders (the ones who built all the temples in game)
- the story of the pillagers, how did they turn evil? Was there a civil war?
- who built the end? Who are the enderman?
- Alex and the rest of the defaults are people from the Minecraft world, how do they get good at building/mining/crafting?
- the story of the woodland mansions, either their creation or someone (from in universe) discovering one and having to clear it out. This one could even be a little spooky!
- a villager decides they don’t want to be a pacifist anymore, do they become a player avatar, or are they on a dark slide towards pillager-dom?

@@Voxalyst i think even the most basic concept EVER of showing the game itself as a movie (a character waking up in a strange world with nothing, exploring and finding new places, friends & eventually the nether, a fortress & beating the ender dragon) would've been a fun adventure movie and fresher than this concept

What exactly about freakishly detailed minecraft sheep with a square body and rounded, real hooves is not that bad
One of my major problems is it looks like they are walking on a green screen and it is all cgi with them placed there
I see a lot of people wishing they leaned in heavier on the cgi, but I sort of feel like I would have preferred more practical effects. The saturation looks really wacky next to the real people

It's a tiny teaser.. chill on the judgement.
the thing is that gets me is that the style isn't even all that bad like the ghast and piglins for example look amazing but it's the fact they insisted on slapping actual human actors into the mixture that really throws it all off. they do not blend well at all which isn't helped by how so many of the shots just look like they're on a greenscreen which! i know is a case for a lot of movies but it isn't supposed to look as obvious as that 😭i can't understand for the life of me why the went down this direction

It was planned as live action from the start in 2014
Yea seriously could easily have just been a animated movie

I like the stylistic choices they've made, the world looks interesting enough, the ridiculous looking mobs definitely fit the tone they're going for, but the live action people really look out of place and kill the immersion because it makes everything else look very obviously green screened
6:05 I believe a dev (possibly notch) described the texture of creepers as "dry leaves" which makes sense with what you're saying about camouflage
And crunchy! 😊
Why we are all children at heart..Grandparents are going to be forced to sit through it..😂
i’d bet money that it will be that “watch once and forget” type of movie. i hope for the kids sake it’s at least fun
Honestly at this point minecrafts getting old and Idk if too many kids are playing anymore
The Minecraft Movie Trailer already took effect with mumbo jumbo being live action
It's hard to tell if it's a fault of the movie or just the trailer, though. Some good movies had terrible trailers.
Its the first thing we are seeing of it when was the last teaser you saw that had any story involved?
I do agree the trailer feels like a random assortment of clips, almost like a short montage. I think they could have set the tone better, as these absurd moments don’t match the fairly ‘vanilla’ trailer style.
It isn't a trailer though. It's merely a teaser. It's likely that an actual trailer will be shown at a later date.
3:30 Is the moon big?
moons big.
Does the moon look... big?
I WAS JUST ABOUT TO COMMENT THIS
Imagine watching the movie amd you hear the famous line: "It's really quite simple" After the credits.😮
5:44 i always thought of creepers to be... Crinkly. Like tin foil. Not sure why. Like a weird bag full of explosives.
Pretty sure their design is meant to mirror leaves, so I always imagined them to be kind of like a ghilie suit.
their texture is taken from leaves.@@tobiasbayer4866
I always thought Creepers to have mottled, pockmarked skin with bumps and grooves. Ya know, the whole "Creepers are plants" theory.
Creepers are plants, change my mind.
The movie looks concerning. But one cannot ignore the existence of NAPOLEON DYNAMITE
Napoleon dynamite is peak cinema
The peakest of movies
I really can. I really, really can.
Napoleon dynamite was its own content. This is a live action version of a voxel game. It's no doubt they're making it a movie because its the most popular game in the world, which makes it feel like a money grab more than anything. Honestly, they'd have had a better time if they just stuck with a fully animated movie.
You can be sure to expect at least one reference to Tina.
Had a similar reaction to the trailer but... what did Mumbo do to his knuckles? 9:03
He was punching a tree after he lost his stuff
@@LethalG1523ah, you've beaten me to the punch!
Climbing. He’s climbing
his hands punished themselves for thumb shifting?
I was thinking the same thing
@mumbojumbo you genuinely look SOOO much happier and healthier than your pre-break self! So happy for you. ❤
Hearing someone who is in cinematography say “I’ll be seeing it in imax, front row” hurts my soul… and my neck 😂😂😂
I'm so used to hearing mumbo as a non omnipotent being that just narrates stuff, it feels like a voice over with his voice when I see him speaking
Mad respect to Minecraft story mode after seeing this “trailer”
I think my problem with this movie is just, this isn’t how I imagine Minecraft. They are leaning fully into the goofy aspects of Minecraft while I imagine a more beautiful and generally simple story.
I’m holding out hope this movie is going to be camp. Like it looks horrible, but I think it’s gonna lean into the horrible-ness and just be unhinged
Being bad on purpose is still bad
@@AeonKnigh432 not always
@@AeonKnigh432yes but there’s fun bad and just bad.
Honestly I didn't think of this but you're so right. There's definitely a world where they get the camp just right. I don't think what they've shown here really demoes that though. Who knows what the final product will be...
@@AeonKnigh432 It could be so bad its good.
this is gonna be like SONIC, trashed by people to the point they rework the movie.

@@armageddon7432you'd rather get a poorly made movie now than a long awaited good one...
Truly a bruh moment...
I don't think anything can be altered to still have consistency with the script and actor reactions.
This is what it is
My biggest problem with the movie is how the characters (The people) look. They look like they were put in after the movie was made. They look out of place from the whole movie. It’s like they wanted to go with realism and animation but couldn’t figure out how to incorporate both in a smooth way.
Another person said this and I couldn’t agree with it more. It looks like this is a Minecraft live video.
I'm just going to assume that anybody who is speaking well on this movie from the trailer is likely being paid/'asked' to.
Not Mumbo, he actually paid for this video not to get deleted for copyright reasons instead of being paid to make it
@@GaamerGuyys He's been on the set, he made friends there that he doesn't want to besmirch.
He's also in the Minecraft scene and doesn't want to burn bridges with people who know he exists and are willing to invite him to such instances.
In my mind, the creeper looks more mossy than fluffy, which is bang on for the lore.
The poster for the MC Movie shows that they're covered in grass
@@comfyphoenix Grass can look fluffy (Like Mexican Feather Grass
@@Ender__Wa Yes, I know
Thats why I said that
I am a bit 50/50 on it.
The landscapes look absolutely insane and I am in love.
The animals and other creatures look a bit odd, but they grew on me. Once we reached the llama, I liked them!
The choice of live action is... the oddest to me though. I can see the story hook with it, but as of now they dont seem to quite fit in visually.
Exactly what I was thinking
I honestly would rather have had an animated movie. The concept had potential but I don't think live action works with a game like Minecraft.
It feels weird to know mumbo jumbo doesn't have a big delicate black moustache.
The biggest concern I've seen by what they've shown in the trailer is that every single bit of humor they've written into the script is going to have the punchline "haha isn't Minecraft so WEIRD?"
"Floating blocks? Isn't that so WEIRD?"
"Ugly sheep? Isn't that so WEIRD?"
"Punching trees? Isn't that so WEIRD?"
That's not a punchline. That's just an observation, which is not a punchline - unless you think that the observation, and thus the target of said observation, is ITSELF a joke.
It's The Big Bang Theory guide to comedy, but now in Minecraft form.
"There's a *slight* disconnect there."
If that's what constitutes slight my eyeballs might just evacuate my head if they're ever unfortunate enough to see what JARRINGLY BAD looks like.
Nope, to me it looks good.
A lot of it looks like AI generated schlock.
@@blizzardgaming7070 Is "AI generated" a synonym for "uncanny" nowadays?
@@rallvegdNo, it is equivalent of "knockoff".
@@blizzardgaming7070 No it doesn’t.
I just think that the weird animation style would work better if it wasn’t directly juxtaposed with actual, live actors
"pretty absurd at certain times"...
No, not at certain times. ALL THE TIME. This looks like Minecraft 2014 irl texture pack CGI. The wolf is not completely covered in fur (he looks like a barbell with a head and legs), the teeth are glossy and human-like, the creeper is too fuzzy...
They need to put this back on the crafting table.. for another 10 years.
im so glad that there are people put there who are excited to watch the movie, genuinely.
i liked absolutely zero things of what they showed in the teaser.
They should reshoot the entire thing and make it animated. They didnt even bother to color correct jack blacks hair as he spawns in to remove the green screen green light shining through his hair. For a TRAILER SHOT.
1:38 slight????
Yes, slight
Maybe I'm missing something, because I don't see ~any~ disconnect, aside from the actor's outfits standing out from the green grass.
@@VirTaro the blocky look compared to the realistic people makes it look hella uncanny
6:00 Creepers weren't originally 'meant' to be camouflaged or stealthy per se, they were the product of a bug in the code for pigs 🐖 which was then turned into a feature by adding a variation of the leaf texture (only oak and 'spruce' types back then)
