Edit: Apparently Canary Island autonomy was in 1982, but revised in 2018. My mistake.
Macaronesia, funnily enough, is not the opposite of Micronesia but rather means “Islands of the Fortunate.”

The canary islands became autonomous in the early 80s but the video only shows as such late in the 90s. Is that a mistake or is there a reason for that?

The thing with Spain is that, since the transition, all of its territories are technically "autonomous" (they are called Autonomous Communities). Canaries aren't special in that regard.
In fact, one could argue there are territories inside the peninsula that have more autonomy, like the Basque Autonomous Community and Navarre.

Quick note, I know they were tiny and we barely have any records before the conquest, but there exist data on the states of the Canary Islands (depends on the island) before the invasion.
The kings in Gran Canaria were called Guanartemes, who ruled over Guanartematos and ther existed two on the island, Telde and Galdar.

This is why I don't get why Portugal is considered the first colonial empire after seizing Ceuta in 1415, when Spain (Castile) had started annexing the Canary Islands since about 1405? (Around 1402 in this video)

    • @miguelpadeiro762
      @miguelpadeiro762 2 місяці тому +2

Did a little looksies since this also sprung my curiosity
And I'd say it's because the initial conquest of the Canaries wasn't an organized effort by Castille, but rather a conquest enacted by the vassal lords of the realm by their own merit, for their own personal reasons and gains.
Only later into the end of the 15th century did Castille take direct action into finishing the conquest of the Canaries
Meanwhile Portugal had a direct action in the conquest of Ceuta with a plan to start a ploy to dominate local trade, as Ceuta was a key trading city in the region (altough the Moroccans shrewdly redirected all and any trade importance to Tangiers later on...)
So the differentiator would be reasoning for conquest.
In Ceuta, Portugal wanted to start a trading empire. In the Canaries, it was conquests from vassal lords seeking further lands for themselves, and not an effort by the Crown.

    Canta, irmão
    Canta meu irmão
    Que a Liberdade é hino
    E o Homem a certeza.
    Com dignidade, enterra a semente
    no pó da ilha nua
    No despenhadeiro da vida
    A esperança é
    Do tamanho do mar
    Que nos abraça
    Sentinela de mares e ventos
    Perseverante
    Entre estrelas
    E o Atlântico
    Entoa o cântico da Liberdade
    Canta, irmão
    canta meu irmão
    Que a Liberdade é hino
    E o Homem a certeza.
Do vale à montanha e do mar à serra,
    Madeira teu nome continua
    Em teus filhos saudosos
    Que além fronteiras
    De ti se mostram orgulhosos.
    Por esse Mundo além,
    Madeira, honraremos tua História
    Na senda do trabalho
    Nós lutaremos
    Alcançaremos
    Teu bem-estar e glória.
Soy la sombra de un almendro,
    Soy volcán, salitre y lava.
    Repartido en ocho peñas
Late el pulso de mi alma.
Soy la historia y el futuro,
    Corazón que alumbra el alba
    De unas islas que amanecen
    Navegando la esperanza.
    Luchadoras en nobleza
    Bregan el terrero limpio
    De la libertad...
    Esta es la tierra amada:
    Mis Islas Canarias.
    Como un solo ser
    Juntas soñarán
    Un rumor de paz
    Sobre el ancho mar.
    Deram frutos a fé e a firmeza
no esplendor de um cântico novo:
os Açores são a nossa certeza
de traçar a glória de um povo.
    Para a frente! Em comunhão,
    pela nossa autonomia.
    Liberdade, justiça e razão
    estão acesas no alto clarão
    da bandeira que nos guia.
    Para a frente! Lutar, batalhar
    pelo passado imortal.
    No futuro a luz semear,
    de um povo triunfal.
De um destino com brio alcançado
    colheremos mais frutos e flores;
porque é esse o sentido sagrado
das estrelas que coroam os Açores.
    Para a frente, Açorianos!
    Pela paz à terra unida.
    Largos voos, com ardor, firmamos,
para que mais floresçam os ramos
    da vitória merecida.
    Para a frente! Lutar, batalhar
    pelo passado imortal.
    No futuro a luz semear,
