    That lift is epic!
    It stops violently, sounds creepy and the motor sounds awesome!
    I wish modern day lifts were like this to be honest.

    You can hear the Bull Motors Super Start noise when the lift starts moving! Those motors are very rare now. Hear it at 5:19. A motor room tour of this lift would be the first time that anyone has filmed a working Super Start motor itself. It sort of does variable frequency by doing a phase shift as the motor starts up giving it the distinctive "whoop-whoop" sound.

      I'm not too sure if this is a Bull motor or a Horace Green "Trislot" - they do sound very similar! Most lifts have Trislot motors, Marryat and Scott being one of the few that used them more than anyone :)

    Neat! I really like the fixtures on this one, I'm surprised that the bulbs have still not burned out.
    Also it's a big first to me to see one that has both swing-out doors and scissor gates... Kinda odd if you ask me, but hey! It gives a nice character to this ol' workhorse of a elevator/lift! They don't make 'em like they used to.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  5 років тому +2

      I would have preferred those doors on the ground floor to be electrically operated, but I've never seen this sort of thing - completely different ones on the upper landings. Oh and that lamp on the 2nd floor was the only original push button that worked!

    • @Alexis_du_60
      @Alexis_du_60 5 років тому +1

      @@mrmattandmrchay there was some elevators/lifts that had electrically operated scissor gates, however, I do not think they were popular in Europe (I have seen one but for the life of me I cannot remember where, I was maybe 5-7 years old when I saw it, an old 70's generic.... "inconnu au bataillon" (stranger in the regiment) as we colloquially say in my country for something that has unknown or unclear origins...) but one thing I know, most of these were touted as "semi-automatic"... Curiously there are plenty (thankfully, the USA has these so-called "Grandfather clauses", potentially saved many of these oldies from a potential modernization) of these "automatic scissor gated" in North America, and these were made by OTIS, most of the time at least (not sure if other companies such as Dover did... It's complicated)

    Talking about changing appearances, the place I live in has an IFMA from 1994 that has the exterior door painted in gray on the ground floor, then has it painted in full maroon-ish red for the first 3 floors, then it has the doorframe and window seal in that gray again for floors 4-7.

    These Marryat and Scott goods lift cars were built to last, really solid construction with chequer plate floors, certainly get your moneys worth from them.

      The good old days! It's the same with everything these days - I'm in the security industry. We don't generally do alarms, but just as a comparison, there's nothing better than doing a job 'properly' without cost cutting. Nowadays, alarms are installed in hours with wireless detectors. When I was a trainee back in 1989 (when I started work), we had the floor boards up, drilled out the joists and everything was cabled properly. Nowadays, the skill sets to install systems like we used to are gone. Engineers fix the detectors up with a couple of screws and mostly the systems are even preprogrammed. No skills needed anymore. Then, we have jamming signals come up, because things like 'Hive central heating thermostats' malfunction when their batteries run low and take out the intruder alarm wireless devices in the process. I totally agree - older methods were better rather than trying to cost cut to get the job. But for the customer, they always go for the lowest price these days, so there is no longer a market for 'quality over cost'.

    That's quite a nice lift! Love the motor sound and the shaking when it stops! I wonder why the doors are different though. I assume the building owner either didn't like the look of the doors from street level or had to replace the gated ones due to issues. Still a great lift with some nice character!

    6:26 why that button wired to buzzer

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  5 років тому

      If someone leaves the gates open, then the lift cannot be used. So if someone presses a call button then a buzzer sounds in the lift to remind someone to close the doors. This would work in a lot of buildings, but not here in a stairwell - if someone leaves the doors open then they are going to be long-gone to hear the buzzer reminding them that someone else wants to use the lift!

      Classic STAR then DELTA motor drive. For those who don't know, STAR motor configuration helps push the motor at startup, then it's switched to DELTA which is better for a continuously running motor. Each config get's a WHOOP when it's switched on! Google STAR DELTA motor for more info.

    • @MichalM
      @MichalM 5 років тому

      @@mrmattandmrchay Do you think that the lift in M&S Slough has this type of motor drive also? The woop woop sounds very similar to the M&S lift.
      EDIT 0:10 That piece of metal looks like it's covering up a pretty large hole - the only company I can think of that originally installed a long button panel like that are Express and Otis.

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  5 років тому

      The star-delta switching was a standard feature to ensure a motor gets running properly back before technology moved on, so I guess it has.

    I wonder, would the modernized lifts have had the old style doors in the beginning, or is this only a goods lift thing? How old does the building have to be to have these sorts of doors? They look like the 60s. And lastly, what is your day job, if you don't mind me asking? Sorry for all the questions, curious minds have to ask!

    • @mrmattandmrchay
      @mrmattandmrchay  5 років тому

      No problems! ...these must be the original doors. The building looks brand new, but going back on google streetview, 2 years ago it was revamped with coloured cladding. So it looks new now, but actually its an old building. My job... technical engineer for mainly access control systems (previously called "card swipe" systems). I was commissioning a system for a large company that we do work for.

    This lift looks like these ones ua-cam.com/video/5yAepgD-cNg/v-deo.html when they were in their pre-modernised state - minus the manual/lattice doors of course. Suspect it is the same type of motor as it sounds the same albeit quieter
