The Jesus Prayer sung in Gothic | The Skaldic Bard

- Here is the ancient Jesus Prayer, translated by me and sung in Gothic by me (and my wife in the second half). The melody I am singing here is a well-known recitation of the prayer.
The Gothic language, sadly now extinct, was an East Germanic language attested between the 3rd and 10th centuries, but some forms of it survived in the Crimea until a substantially later date.
The Goths were quite early converts to Christianity with their conversion taking place in the late fourth century. Just picture the scene of a group of newly converted Goths gathering in a humble wooden church reciting this.

There isn't much songs in Gothic.

Goths: *mega oof*
They converted, but to the Arian heresy and did not recognize Jesus as God.

A curious detail in history is that St John the Chrysostom (the Gold-Mouthed) preached the Orthodox/Catholic/mainstream form of Christianity to the strongly Arianized population of Constantinople in the 4th century. At least one neighborhood of the city was inhabited by Christian but Arian Goths, so he could not just preach in Greek. Those people needed some sermons in Gothic. So, according to church historian Sozomenes St John started learning Gothic, translated his own liturgy/mass in that language and started preaching in it. His Gothic texts are not preserved. But we have the Liturgy of St John in Greek and many other languages. Plus, there are neo-Gothic translations of various books, a grammar, a primеr and Wulfila's New Testament. We've even got your prayer. So, St John's liturgy is translatable into Gothic. That would be an actual reconstruction of a once existing text.
Thanks for sharing, fascinating stuff!
Too easy to forget how diverse these metropolitan centers of the Roman Empire could be due to the integration of many nations.

I love the Jesus Prayer, one of my faves to come out of Eastern Christianity. Kudos to Kyle for introducing me to it and Eastern Christianity as a whole. I tend to say it in a mixture of English, Spanish, and Hebrew. One recitation will be in full English, the next a mix of Spanish and English, then Hebrew and English. I'm not fluent in Hebrew and sadly my Spanish, which was pretty good, is now quite rusty unfortunately.

Who is this women singing with you, Sir? She has really beautiful voice
I don't know what you need to do, but this channel needs to be more famous!
Haha, thanks. Sharing helps! ;-)
As a German its weird how Frauja means Lord, since Frau in German is woman and Herr is Lord or Sir.
Aye, though the Proto Germanic root *frawjô is still preserved in modern German Fronleichnam (“Corpus Christi, body of the Lord”); Fron, Fronarbeit (“socage”), fronen (“to do socage”), which is kinda based
@@SkaldBard Thanks, I did not know that. Btw. I forgot to tell you that you I really love how you sung this prayer. May God bless you and your work.
Thank you very much, my friend
@@MetalMitAlexYeah, as a Pole who knows German I agree that's odd how Lord changed from Frauja to der Herr. But you know, languages changed a lot-
Now in Polish ago is "dawniej", in Middle-Ages it was "drzewiej", now "drzewo" means tree
It's The Father U Jah . It's in the sound that connects Fr. Son and Holy Spirit. The word Frank is Father U is The connection to the sun..one logo the U , leading up with two points of interest so Frank is the Father U Ja is son 3:14
The Jesus Prayer Is my Favorite.
Excellent work at constructing this in Gothic. Do you have any references or resources you could share on the language for those who would like to learn more of it?
Btw you should read Wolfram’s History of the Goths!
Do you reckon you could sing psalm 136 (exomologisthe to kyriou) in Old Norse? The one in Greek is absolutely great and I think you could do a really good job with it! Amazing video!
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll make a note :)
This is beautiful! 👏
I've never heard anything in Gothic before, it's as beautiful a language as it is old. Could you add onto your (very long by now) list of song ideas, a Welsh or Brythonic song or prayer? Maybe something to do with Dewi Sant (Saint David of Wales)? Would be incredible, as there's no Welsh folk songs i've found that are explicitly Christian or Catholic❤️🏴 (aside from Welsh Church Hymns of course, Llef is hautingly beautiful)
Nice idea about Saint David, definitely have Welsh on my to-do list so will have a think :-)
@@SkaldBard whatever you upload, I have no doubt it will be magnificent, and I wish you good luck with singing Welsh, those LL's and Mutations are hard to get the hang of ;-; at least for me they are in trying to learn Cymraeg myself

And thanks for the kind words :-)
We must revive the Gothic language

Haha - I've just loved reading about and speaking different languages for as long as I can remember, really - but there's always plenty more to learn :-)

You know the biblical figure of Samson the Danite? Maybe you can write a song of him. His stength, fall from god to sin, and his deadly redemption to the Philistines.

Splendid! Gotta love it. These last five years I'm busy reenacting the Bishop Wulfila at a small Bulgarian festival by ancient Nicopolis ad Istrum in former Roman Lower Moesia/Dacia Ripensis (modern village of Nikyup). I had to learn some Gothic and publicly read parts of the Codex Argenteus, so Gothic Christian texts have become somewhat familiar to me. very underrated culture are the goths, even if they were heretics ...
They did end up converting to Catholicism so they didn't stay heretics for long! ;-)
@@SkaldBard Well actually their conversion is the moment they became heretics ;)
They were heathens and became catholics yes, but arians, not niceans.
And arianism is an heresy that does not consider Christ to be God, only His son, but inferior to Him. And therefore did not recognised Mary as Theotokos.
