One thing I really appreciate about this episode is how they incorporated his monologue to his actions in this episode about Giving as well as take. How he was able to give to either party to manipulate them into getting what he wants. I cannot wait to see how the rest of the show plays out.
It wouldnt have worked, since Joker is around 40s, if it was set in the Batman verse, then Joker would of been an old man, unless we talking about Joker variants of course.
That would be boring. Joaquin’s joker is just a regular mentally Ill guy who puts makeup on. Pattinson’s joker (Barry Keaghon) is shown to be an extremely intelligent manipulator who has naturally bleached white skin and a scary smile.
The part where The Penguin character catches the kid Vic who tries to steal his rims, reminds me of similar backstory of the character who plays Baby from Baby Driver and his boss.
Yeah I think I she’s great. I think that the way her story is integrated into the movie and some of the dialogue she gets saddled with are weaker aspects. But not her fault
I loved The Batman and was so impressed with Farrell's Penguin, so when this series was announced I was all for it - 10mins in it was exactly what I was hoping for, and come the end of the episode I was gutted I couldn't watch more afterwards. I think it would kinda a shame if we don’t see Robert Pattinsons Batman in a show about Gotham. I don’t think the show will need to show him but I think it would be a waste to have a Gotham show with no Batman appearance.
@@cjmk5923 this is a pretty big situation in Gotham no? The first movie was about Falcone and The Riddler and now Penguin just offed his son and the mobsters are fighting each other because of that. I think Batman would show up for that personally.
I'm really surprised that they can make the Penguin such a likable character. Yes, he's a mob, he kills people and uses people but at the same time he has a soft spot for people - how he treated his mom and how he gives Vic a chance. Not to mention he's actually pretty smart too. In fact, Matt Reeves did a better job at convincing me that Penguin is smart compared to what he did with Batman. Showing someone getting out of difficult situations by planning and strategizing is a much better way to convey that someone is smart compared to solving some riddle
This episode could have been half of the show if the writers wanted to half ass it... Episode 1 ending with cliffhanger Penguin getting caught by Alberto Episode 2 ending with cliffhanger Sofia Falcon saying Hi Oz at the Falcone Mansion. Episode 3 ending with cliffhanger Sofia shouting looking at her brother's body with Oz devilishly smirking. Of course in this case above they add below average filler to fill in the gap. BUT THEY DIDN'T!! THEY SHOWED A WHOLE SAGA IN ONE EPISODE!!! Would be interesting to see where it goes from here. Fingers crossed it doesn't loose it's steam🤞
Glad I picked this over Agatha lol. It actually made me want to watch “The Batman” I didn’t like the film in theatres, but I’ll give it another chance now.
It has its issues even though I love the movie. I understand people who didn't like it and that's fine. But that's cool you want to give it a 2nd chance. Let us know what you think on 2nd viewing.
Colin Farrell fundamentally understands the character he’s playing, I think. If every Batman villain represents some kind of trauma or madness, then “The Penguin” has always been insecurity…the lingering feeling that no matter what you do, no matter how much wealth or splendor you surround yourself with…you think people don’t take you seriously; and you’re not good enough. Oz’s mother paints a brutal picture…you can tell she had her hooks in him from a young age; calling him a p*ssy half the time, and then making him feel important by saying he’s strong. Sofia gives him a similar boost when she says “she always knew what he was capable of.” …as opposed to her brother, who belittled & diminished him (nice bit of duality there; since their father Carmine seemed to go halfway). Both are methods of control to keep “The Penguin” from realizing their true potential. I look forward to where they take the character…I know it isn’t going to be pretty.
Oh man, the writing though. This was fantastic. My wife, who typically doesn't enjoy shows or movies with "too much talking", really enjoyed this and said it was "very engaging". It's absolutely PACKED with dialogue and very short interstitial shots. All performances are on point. Amazing vibes.. It's good.

I agree with Other Joe. Penguin is set in the Batman universe in Gotham itself and as such, it must abide by its parameters. It would be an absolute copout if they completely ignored the existence of Batman. A capable writing team would be able to weave him in there somewhere. If Batman is not even mentioned, then this show is only capitalizing on an established IP and shouldn't be called Penguin.

This might sound totally unrelated but watching this show made me realise what we missed with the Book of Boba Fett TV for star wars. Imagine a show following Boba through the criminal underbelly of coruscant or nar shaada. It couldve been a super thrilling mob show set in Star wars and instead we got goofy biker gang and nice Boba. This show is so gritty and Gotham feels like a real city where crime actually exists unlike the Boba show where everyone is too nice and you never even see Boba do anything criminal like
Only minor, unimportant gripe was the school bus becase a) why was it going fast down that road if it was clearly blocked by the truck just in front of Penguin's car and b) the guy was standing in the road for quite a while before getting hit - surely the bus driver saw him and had time to stop? Meh, I'll just chalk it up in the head-canon to the bus driver checking his phone.
Gotham was surprisingly great despite not really having Batman in it. Bruce is in it, but he's slowly becoming Batman from the moment Thomas and Martha get murdered in the pilot, all the way to the series finale. Really the main protagonist of that show is Ben McKenzie's Jim Gordon. Most of the villains that show up are really good despite it being kind of silly to have them without Batman, including Robin Lord Taylor's version of Oswald Cobblepot. To be honest, the worst part of the show was she whose name is to be kept out of Chris Rock's mouth. Other than her character, I would recommend giving it a chance.
So far so good with The Penguin show, and if you follow some of the comic book and animated DC stories, you will see that Sofia Falcone is a smart and dangerous foe. I kinda recognized where the story was going when she was introduced, but I forgot which particular Batman/Detective Comics story it was exactly. It should be a good story going forward, and I’m sure they will put their own spin into the Penguin live action tv series story, and I am looking very forward to it. Colin Farrell is my favorite Penguin at the moment, there hasn’t been that many interpretations, but I did like Robin Lord Taylor’s version of Penguin from Gotham, until Colin Farrell’s version came along and totally won me over, it was a very close comic accurate portrayal in matching the look and mannerisms of the Penguin, but his backstory and upbringing is a little different but I still didn’t mind it, I totally love & respect the hell out of it.

batman being more of a mythical being we only get to see during the films is kinda awesome, especially if they stick to most of these scenes being during the day, it just makes sense
Everyone will tell you that real strength of Batman is in his support characters. Gotham was great, because it actually did focus on things going in Gotham and not just repeat Batman story for hundred time (especially as it is not even the real one). Gotham actually did explain what is Court of Owls and Hugo Strange to general audience. And the best part! They even know that there is more then one Joker!
The new drug can be one of two things: a component of Titan/Venom or a component of Lazarus. Either one could heal Oz's foot, Vic's stuttering, and even the mother's onset dementia. I'd like to see other mob families on the sideline of the upcoming Falcone/Maroni war such as Sionis, Thorne, Russians, Triads, etc.
I love the vibe and cinematography of Gotham. The Christopher Nolan Gotham, you couldn’t really feel that gritty and dark underbelly. Idk if it’s a lens or a type of camera but that’s shits fire
This show off to a great start. Right away you get the sense Oswald has been playing a very, VERY long con trying to worm his way in with everyone around him and just waiting for the right moment to strike. It doesn't even need to be said you just get that gut feeling. The prosthetics look amazing, even better than the actual movie, like seriously if not for the voice I wouldn't know that was Colin Farrell. Can't wait to see where they take this series.
Another positive aspect of the show is it's an hour long. not this barely 30 minutes from so many other premium shows these days. I don't think the kid will betray Penguin. I think, Penguin will get in a hard spot and abandon the kid, i.e. letting him get merc'd. The kid will feel betrayed in his final moments as he realizes Penguin doesn't really have loyalties.
the penguin is the best thing that came out if the Batman. and they did good by giving him a show. he is spot on, and the makeup is just incredible. everything about this world is amazing and well crafted. the script is perfect and the acting is high quality and even more elevated by the cast. there is very little to unlike, that it becomes irrelevant. love the show. and i was surprised by the amount of effort put into this show. 10 out of 10.

you think the next movie set in this extremely realistic version of Gotham is gonna be about a man with a freeze ray that wears a snow globe on his head
not a chance mr freeze is too fantasical for this batman apparently

I'll honestly give it a 8. The acting, writing and scenery is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! But does feel slow and I'm okay with that. Clancy is fantastic as Salvatore (not biased because my name is Salvatore and Clancy is fantastic actor). Yes Colin is great again. Mark Strong again another great actor wow. But I do wish John Turturro was back but I'm okay with Mark.
Edit: John from the movie couldn't get on the show people of personal schedules
Colin Farrell carried The Penguin.
Thats alot of movies nowadays, just hire one decent actor and hope they hold the project together

Oz wanted to get caught. he needed to make it convincing and real, "surprisingly" running into Sofia, putting up a real "fight" into trying to run away and escape them, and hiding in the trunk was one of those moves. everything was planned.
also the fact you didn't know Carmine died in the movie and thought they replaced the actor is surprising. they even said it at the beginning.
Nah he didn't want to get caught he just thought on his feet after he was caught.
@@cjmk5923then why did he drive right up to them for no reason lol
He's replaced with Mark strong. You can see it in the first scene in the news. The original actor couldn't make it due to scheduling conflicts. We'll probably see the new falcone actor in some flashbacks 😊
@@cjmk5923no, he wanted to get caught. He had Victor bring Sofia her brother's body in a trunk and framed the other mobsters while taking the heat off of Penguin. Penguin and Victor even talked about the plan after Sofia let him go

They haven’t directly said who the villain of Batman 2 is yet but the top two that people suspect are the court of owls or Mr freeze
Both, If done right, would be amazing!
Court of owls fits better into their vision of Gotham tho I think
Joe , Gotham is way better than you think . I thought the same thing . Think of Gotham as if it’s a what if villains before Batman .
Makes no sense, the villains exist because of Batman, that's the dichotomy of him.
It's really not that good lol. It starts off pretty solid, but having all the villains established BEFORE Batman is a thing (and then making kid Bruce Batman at the end was cringe) makes no sense.
Well, Gotham before Batman were controlled by mafia/ mob, and too many corruption within the authorities. After Batman do things, many "weirdo" villain appear, somewhat attracted by the bat. Nolan's movie feels more accurate than Gotham tv series
It’s his opinion. Don’t tell someone that something is better than they thought. That’s sheer ignorance. We’re all entitled to our own opinions based on our own life experiences.
One thing I really appreciate about this episode is how they incorporated his monologue to his actions in this episode about Giving as well as take. How he was able to give to either party to manipulate them into getting what he wants.

I wish Joaquin Phoenix' Joker was in this universe, and not in some random canon.
It wouldnt have worked, since Joker is around 40s, if it was set in the Batman verse, then Joker would of been an old man, unless we talking about Joker variants of course.
@karls4937 Joker having some gray in his hair wouldn't have been terrible.
@@bryant7542 Maybe old man Joker could of been interesting.
Don’t worry Joker 2 will turn you off it
That would be boring. Joaquin’s joker is just a regular mentally Ill guy who puts makeup on. Pattinson’s joker (Barry Keaghon) is shown to be an extremely intelligent manipulator who has naturally bleached white skin and a scary smile.
Gotham was quality tbh i love the villains
Absolutely
Joe doesn’t expect to see Batman in this but Gotham a story following young Gordon and child Bruce is a no because he’s not Batman. Make it make sense
The part where The Penguin character catches the kid Vic who tries to steal his rims, reminds me of similar backstory of the character who plays Baby from Baby Driver and his boss.
Didn’t Turturro’s character die in the movie?
Carmine in this show is dead as well , probably going to see throw back scenes of him

I think it would kinda a shame if we don’t see Robert Pattinsons Batman in a show about Gotham. I don’t think the show will need to show him but I think it would be a waste to have a Gotham show with no Batman appearance.
Gotham is Huge like LA the place where the Falcones live is also Gotham so is Robbinsville no way Batman can be everywhere.
Episode 1 ending with cliffhanger Penguin getting caught by Alberto
Episode 2 ending with cliffhanger Sofia Falcon saying Hi Oz at the Falcone Mansion.
The next Batman is probably going to be based on court of owls

It actually made me want to watch “The Batman” I didn’t like the film in theatres, but I’ll give it another chance now.
It has its issues even though I love the movie. I understand people who didn't like it and that's fine. But that's cool you want to give it a 2nd chance. Let us know what you think on 2nd viewing.
I Got chills in the beginning wen they announced Batman in the news 🙌
Colin Farrell fundamentally understands the character he’s playing, I think.
If every Batman villain represents some kind of trauma or madness, then “The Penguin” has always been insecurity…the lingering feeling that no matter what you do, no matter how much wealth or splendor you surround yourself with…you think people don’t take you seriously; and you’re not good enough.
Oz’s mother paints a brutal picture…you can tell she had her hooks in him from a young age; calling him a p*ssy half the time, and then making him feel important by saying he’s strong.
Sofia gives him a similar boost when she says “she always knew what he was capable of.”
…as opposed to her brother, who belittled & diminished him (nice bit of duality there; since their father Carmine seemed to go halfway).
Both are methods of control to keep “The Penguin” from realizing their true potential.
I look forward to where they take the character…I know it isn’t going to be pretty.

This first episode felt like The Sopranos set in Gotham city, enjoyed the hell out of it.
What??? He is commenting TV Shows and he didnt watched Sopranos??? Just ban him from the show till he watches whats its all about. How can anyone not watch Sopranos??? Its by far the best show, a classic that invented all thsi other shows and modern TV with the best character ever in a tv show and ebst scenes ever created. OK im not listening to that dude until he watches The Sopranos.
batman being more of a mythical being we only get to see during the films is kinda awesome, especially if they stick to most of these scenes being during the day, it just makes sense
If Mr Krabs and Colin are in it I’m gonna have to watch it
The catwoman in the movie was the best one in a looooong while also Danny's Penguin was a mutant tweaker
Matt said we won’t have The Batman in the show , maybe we get to see Bruce instead
You're going to be disappointed bro.. people who have watched the full season have already reported that there is 0 batman/Bruce Wayne scenes
The first ten minutes of Penguin are better than anything Disney+ has done.
Everything was good, except the CGI in a *few* scenes.
