    Saw a H&S briefing at work about hard hats. There was a hefty bolt inside a scaff tube that fell out from some height and nearly hit someone. Imagine that without a hard hat, could be life a changing injury...good to see manufacturers bringing out products that are comfortable, helps reduce the reasons why people don’t use them.

    Here’s a simple question, how many head injuries have been prevented by hard hats and how many have been caused by hard hats? Also, do the possibility stop people thinking? Safety is the result of not being exposed to hazards. So why not remove the hazards?

    • @rmh_223

      Remove the hazards? I guess the whatever industry you are in makes the difference but me being in a shipyard that seems impossible.

    Very interesting video Roger. And just as important for diy’ers to have head protection as the pro’s.
    I really wish you’d make a video about dust extraction vacuums. I think you did one last year, but the model you discussed was a bit of a beast and too big for day to day use. I’ve put off buying one in the hope that you’ll be giving some thoughts and guidance. Take care! David (Leeds)

    I do especially like the customized MSA hard hat accessories, particularly the V-Gard winter liners. What about the OSHA-approved western "cowboy-style" hard hats? I'm taken aback to see them on a construction site. I always wonder if it's a real hard hat or just some wannabe cowboy chapeau. Personally, I tend to prefer the classic Bullard-style full brim which looks a bit like a combination of a WW1 French Adrian and a British Brodie helmet. Nothing says "serious worker" better than a full brim hard hat.

    They fall off. A health and safety bod said I had to wear one while putting a roof on. So my hat falls off and the person beneath me is hit with it. What can fall on my head when I’m on a roof?
    I hope the rules have relaxed in the UK now.

    Well done, Roger, on what is an important safety aspect - and risk to livelihood, too. Do you have any stats on head injuries which could help encourage professional and DIY-ers to wear head safety gear? (i noticed you included stats on your ladder video). Many thanks.

    • @msasafety
      @msasafety 5 років тому

      Hi Paul. Thanks for your interest - we’re glad to see that you take safety seriously. Last year the NHS dealt with 6,372 cases of people falling from ladders at home in a single bank holiday weekend. See full article: msane.ws/ladderinjury
      At work, being struck by moving, flying or falling objects accounted for 13 per cent of all worker deaths in the UK between 2014-19. Wherever there’s a potential risk - whether at home or at work - the necessary safety equipment should be worn and steps taken to appropriately mitigate those risks.
      You can find out more in our article on our website: gb.msasafety.com/head-protection

    A great video , like the look of the hard hat you are showing. The will always be those occasions when hard hat will save your life . I had one crack in half after a starting handle stuck on a old diesel mixer . Then again I have also been told I must wear one while driving teleporters to which I laughed and said if anything comes through that cab the hard hat is not off to help me . I will keep my eye out for one of these hard hats cause like you said they do give head aches and not falling off your head is a fantastic idea . I used to wear the balaclava over the top to hold mine on .

      Hi there. We’re glad you like the look of our V-Gard® Winter Liners. They not only keep your head warm and offer extra protection but come in several models, including water repellent, arc-flash tested or anti-static for use in ATEX areas. Perfect for those with less ‘insulation’ under their lid 🙂 And importantly, they’ve been developed and approved for use with our V-Gard® range of hard hats. Check them out here: msane.ws/WoolylinerVGARD

    What catches a lot of small builders out. Is the change in the cdm laws. So even Joe bloggs fitting Mrs Jones new roof. Or loft conversion has to adhere. And the HSE are doing a lot of spot checks on properties with scaffolding up. Or vans on the drive. So definitely worth keeping a hat with you. And of course the other required equipment.

    Well covered Roger. My dad didn't wear one back in the day cos he thought it would make him bald. Full head of hair still at 70+ but I'm sure things dropped on him back then, cos he's a bit odd these days (in a good way). I wear on site when needed, I can see insurance companies avoiding pay out when PPE isn't used and injury happens, one of many good reasons to be geared up. 👍

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  5 років тому

      Hi Chris
      You are completely right. The insurance angle is everything. I know somebody who lost a finger in chop saw and the payout from the company was zilch because he shouldn't have put his finger under the blade. Everything is geared towards you taking personal responsibility.

      @@SkillBuilderIt's like every industry I think, like banks making it more difficult to access our stuff instead of them spending more on security. We're not necessarily protecting our bodies, but protecting our financial future by wearing this stuff. Have to admit, PPE has gotten a hell of a lot better over the years at least!

    I think desk jockeys should wear hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, safety toe boots, and high visibility clothing. If all of these items are so comfortable theres no reason not to be safe. Funny thing is I have seen a fella sustain a nasty head injury from a falling light cover that hadn’t been properly attached while he was sitting at his desk.

    Oh so now hard hat manufacturers have figured out that climbing helmets dont suck. Huh. Wow, nice to finally pull their heads out of their arses! I can see by bvb the one adjustment though that they still haven't completely caught up. Their should also be an adjustment on the headband circumference too, not just the one hanging the occipital lobe.Good on ya for giving those away BTW! I am going to hold out till they make one for HOT climates that is "really venting" that lets a decent amount of air through.

    Finally. A nice example of personal individual reality versus "regulations". Regulations assume a standard. But people have an infinite variety of issues.
    Personal protection is important. Personally, I have never had issues with a hard had. And I have worn then a lot. To be safe. But I am maybe an abortion since I have no problem wearing them. Not wearing proper PPE is a good indication of someones lack of professionalism, in my experience.

    • @jsvalina3503
      @jsvalina3503 5 років тому

      Actually I found that professionalism has little to do with whether a person chooses to wear ppe. Usually it's more of a comfort issue.Also, some people are the increasing amounts of PPE a hazard in themselves as it becomes harder to see hear and be aware of real dangers when they're wearing all of it. Brain food. Cheers!

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  4 роки тому

      Mr M
      I am in no doubt whatsoever that given the choice most workers would choose not to wear a hard hat all day long until the very second something falls on their head. However on the medium and larger sites the decision is not ours and every year thousands of workers have cause to thank the people who insisted on them wearing head protection. Their families may also thank them because head injuries are not fun for anyone. Talk to the Mother who is now spoon- feeding her 24 year old son who took a holiday job on a badly regulated site. Talk to the guy who, since his accident, has violent mood swings and routinely attacks his family. All they were doing was going to work, so the word 'bullshit' needs to be put in context.
      I think everyone agrees that head protection can be uncomfortable and hot but MSA has worked very hard to produce something that is more comfortable and cooler. If you have to wear a hat all day then you might as well wear a good one. That is the simple message here, nothing more.

    • @EuroB0B1
      @EuroB0B1 4 роки тому

      @@SkillBuilder No personal offence to the individuals in your story but the first mistake they made was working on a dangerous site and yes isn't it a crime that all those workers rely on a piece of plastic to save there ass as it should never happen. PPE is last resort not to be relied on. This is just a sales pitch anyway so please leave the guilt trip out.
