Did you get off the ferry in Birkenhead by foot to get the bus to Hamilton Square station?
Thre was a bus to the terminal provided for all .foot passangers

When you get to the terminal you can wait for the bus to Hamilton Square (I was waiting about 15 minutes) or get a taxi or Uber.

About 8 hours on the sea. With check-in, embarkation and disembarkation 10 hrs I would say.
Do they check any visa pasport ? No immigration at liverpool?
No passport/visa checks as this ferry service is within the United Kingdom.
