The Mackie conversation/tangent is a super interesting one, and worthy of exploring! I’ll be honest and share that one of the things I appreciate about the Mackie designs is that of all the goddess dolls produced by Mattel over the years, these are the only ones to showcase any ethnic diversity. For me, that’s a significant plus.
That said, I’m not arguing his cultural representation is at all accurate or that Mattel should have handed the reigns over to Mackie to have him decide unilaterally what an Asian goddess should look like, but Mackie’s relationship with Mattel stretches back into the 80s. I’m not surprised he was tapped for the project.
Regarding the designs themselves, Mackie is a couture and costume designer whose speciality is excess. While these dolls may have had some general roots in regional cultures, they are very much intended to be fantasy dolls. There are 54 countries in Africa for example. I’m assuming if you’re designing a fashion representing a continent of that size, you’ll be painting in very broad strokes. Again not defending the choices, it’s just an observation.
And the last thing I want to say is I’m trying to remember not only the time and place in which these dolls existed, but also not to reduce Mackie to just a “white guy” designer. For lack of a better term, the man is a legend. He’s designed for Cher, Diana Ross, Rupaul, Carol Burnett, and Marilyn Monroe…his impact in fashion is unmatched. That doesn’t make him infallible, but I do think his artistic contributions are worthy of respect. Again…just me thinking “out loud” as I process my thoughts/feelings. 😂
As an aside…if you’re ever looking for Barbie dolls representing a more diverse Africa, you should check out the Treasures of Africa Collection by designer, Byron Lars! There are 5 dolls in the collection (Tano, Tatu, Moja, Mbili, and Nne), all of whom are stunning! Very much high fashion fantasy couture, but Mr. Lars’s designs are inspiring.
As always, thanks for another thought provoking doll ranking video. I always really enjoy these, and the “thought exercise” that typically follows. 🙂
Byron Lars, Treasures of Africa series, noted. Thanks for the recommendation. 🖐️👍🙂
I love the Goddess face mold too. It is seldom used in collector dolls now, although it was just used in the Kris Goyri Dia de Muertos Barbie last year.
She’s perfection, you have great taste!!!
YAAAAAH I love a good kitty appearance even if only by voice 😌 let ur kitties know I love them with all my heart and can’t wait for them to be featured next time. Also!! Have you ever considered doing lalaloopsy rankings? I’ve never even collected them myself but always thought they were fun designs. Totally okay if you’re not into the idea ofc!!
I will absolutely pass on the love to the cats haha ♥️ what’s funny is I originally decided against a Lalaloopsy ranking cause I didn’t think people would care but I’ve gotten the request a couple times now so…onto the list it goes!
Can Bob Mackie Design a doll? Yes, and she will eat. Should Bob Mackie design EVERY doll? No lol
my mom died today and i just wanted to tell you ur video will bring me alot of joy in these dark times. thank you so much❤️
Oh my gosh, I'm sorry! Sending all the virtual hugs possible! I hope you and your family are doing ok.
Oh gosh! I'm so sorry for your loss. I sincerely hope that your getting the support that you need and taking time for yourself. May God or the universe or whatever you believe in bless you and guide you through this.
So so sorry to hear about your loss, I’m honored to (hopefully) offer a pleasant distraction for a few minutes. Sending love your way ♥️
I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending all the love your way in hopes that it’ll bring some additional comfort alongside the video ❤❤❤❤
I have the Goddess of Asia and she’s absolutely gorgeous in person. I really love her 💗
I think Bob Mackie just does a sketch. I got the Neptune Fantasy one she was actually the first doll to use the Mackie face mold. He didn't want them to continue to use the Superstar face mold on his dolls. I get that my Neptune would have l9oked so off if she had the Superstar face mold.
The Aphrodite doll is my absolute GRAIL doll. I just adore it.
Oh god they're so beautiful 😍
Probably some of the best Barbies out there
Acknowledgment aside, there is a larger, more nuanced discourse concerning Bob Mackie's four "Fantasy" Goddess Barbies: they were released between 1998-2001, far from today's social understanding of recognizing appropriation and tone-deafness. But this involves the continued discussion concerning who is "allowed" to design for whom. Should Mattel have, at all, asked a non-white designer to create four dolls that "represented" their entire respective territories? Probably not. So why weren't there more non-white artists employed then as--for what it's worth--there are now?
That a white-skinned, blonde-haired, blue-eyed doll representing the Goddess of the Galaxy means something, too.
I’m not trying to be unkind, but I feel like you are missing the point. They are supposed to be fantasy dolls. So obviously they aren’t supposed to be totally accurate. I hope I’m not being offensive to you. Anyhow, just my two cents 🙂
I love the unicorn one, holy shit.
the goddess mold and mackie mold are my top favorite molds of all time, perfection ! FYI, the goddess line were actuklay designed by Carter bryan, the creator of bratz 😂
That unicorn doll is actually in the game love nikki too! I used to have bits and pieces of that suit on love Nikki, but that was my old account unfortunately
Can confirm, the moon on Goddess of the Moon is attached to the headpiece as well as the front of the dress.
Thank you!! I needed to know haha
I just bought the Goddess of Asia Barbie, and I totally agree with you. The whole series is problematic by today’s standards, and I think it’s likely at least some of the designs could be seen as offensive (e.g. the use of the dragon or eagle). However, I do feel better that they were made 25 years ago, and I am just buying a second-hand one. To me they are still beautiful, and you can’t get that detail of beading, fabric, etc. in any modern Barbie. Most of the Mackie dolls sell for less than modern collector Barbies, and they give so much more.
I'm still not used to tisten the ai dub UA-cam put on your videos lol. Btw Princess Barbie tierlist when???
Apparently it was really shocking for a lot of people haha, if you find you don’t like it there should be an option to turn it off!
There’s soooo many princess dolls it’s a daunting task but…maybe soon haha
@@FaeryTaleDolls you can separate the princess dolls in decades
Thank you for always taking time to discuss serious topics around race and representation in your videos. So much of "fun" popular culture is deeply impacted by social issues, and I really appreciate you making space for those discussions. I'd love to hear you interview BIPOC doll collectors to see which Barbies they feel have been done well. Have any more recent dolls been embraced for their racial / cultural representation? Has Barbie continued to make racist choices with recent dolls? I'd also love to know how the company's creative process has changed over the past few decades. What does the diversity look like behind the scenes these days? When I look at all these goddess dolls it really pisses me off that they're all white women (excluding the "goddess of 'insert-continent'" dolls, which you already covered). The goddess of the sun or moon would have looked so stunning with a dark black skintone and natural hair. And there are so many fascinating goddesses from cultures all around the world - I would have loved to see those represented! (Obviously only if it's appropriate to depict those goddesses visually and only if they hired designers from the appropriate culture). It does upset me that the goddess of the Arctic was a generic white lady. There are so many native cultures that could have been represented (again, only in partnership with designers from those cultures; totally agree with you that this particular doll line would have f-ed that up). If they didn't feel equipped to represent particular cultures, she could have been Goddess of the Snow - a fantasy goddess who could have been depicted as any race. I also would love to see a much wider range of body types represented by these goddess. Historically, tall and thin bodies would not have always been the default way to represent the gods. And I'm sure there are also some bad ass goddesses who were depicted as old women. Would have been fun to see that as well!
You bring up soooo many good points. not only is it important to be respectful and inclusive for the sake of seeing people as humans, but also not making every doll white and blond opens up SO MANY beautiful design opportunities! Both in a fantasy setting and being cultural accurate like? The wasted potential is both sad and harmful
You are too basic for bob mackie and thats ok
Right 🙄
@FaeryTaleDolls 🤣🫢 sorry but like...
