George Kennedy joined the army in 43 as a private. He was a combat veteran with bronze stars. In the fifties he reached the rank of captain. He at first was technical advisor for the Phil Silvers show for any questions about the Army. He wanted to continue with an Army career but due to a back in injury was discharged. It was Phil Silvers who helped him get a career started.
When GK says, "....thats what I love about the 707, the only thing she can't do is read!", love how he lets the cigar dip up and down in his mouth. Looks so cool! Almost made me wanna take up cigar smoking.
But All of a Sudden Mechanical Patroni is Now A Pilot! 🥴🤔 On Airport 79..where the plot was written by a Two Year Old …Let me see. Plane gets shot at..they land..and get back on the plane..to get shot at again..🤔🥴
My friends and I used to play “Airport” back in the day, with a couple of scale model plastic airliners, Dinky toys, and a Super City set for the airport terminal and hangars. Patroni always saved the day! 😅
I did the same thing with any toy/model airplane I could get ahold of. When I was a little boy raised in N.W. Florida one winter it snowed! I hauled my Fischer price metro airport and parking garage playsets outside, along with the F.P. little jumbo jet and assorted other toy planes, and played out the whole scenario! I had the whole thing memorized, all my favorite lines from George Kennedy and Dean Martin.
Be an retired Air Force aircraft mechanic myself, this was my favorite scene in the movie. The story he told is true. We had a plane come back, the person did not get sucked out he got jammed in the sexton window that blew out. we did have to clean the cockpit after the investigation. not good scene.
This happened on a recent Southwest flight between Philadelphia and Dallas! There was no explosive aboard! A malfunction occurred in the engine that led to a woman nearly being sucked out! People pulled her in, but from what I understand, she later died due to her injuries! The flight safely returned to Philadelphia!

Having seen the Airplane! films first, seeing this now is gold. We can see how the parody characters grew from these performances, George is the Sarge all the way!
I remember listening to Kennedy on KLOS explaining how and why John F. Kennedy Jr. went down in the ocean back in '99 with his wife and sister-in-law. George was an experienced pilot and had made that flight dozens of times. Basically, they died because the sister-in-law was late, hours late. John was not (IR) instrument rated and he flew the plane right into the water because he couldn't see the coastline and thought they were level. (BTW George, thanks for the autograph.)

In 1962, Continental flight 11, from Chicago O’Hare to Kansas City experienced exactly what was described in the movie, with one major difference. The bomber, who had purchased a life insurance policy for his wife and child, detonated a bomb made up of several sticks of dynamite, in the starboard side rear restroom. When the bomb exploded, it blew the entire tail section off of the main fuselage. Even though the flight crew did everything they could to keep the Boeing 707 flying, but with the loss of controls when the tail separated, doomed the plane. All passengers and crew died. There is a memorial to Flight 11 in Unionville, Mo.

He couldnt have been cast better as Patroni. Dean Martin not so much as anything lol. Burt as Bakersfeild yea. But the hokey special effects? Well its a movie.
Too mean. You can't bust chops for effects in a movie released in 1970 when they were still shooting with models. In fact, the explosion decompression scene was impressively accurate without any CGI help.

These movies had a lot of consulting. They would not risk to play the fools for the audience.
