    I think the Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer would be good for this list. It was much more about how we can and do use elements of the gift economy in our every day lives than I expected. It kind of outlined little things we can do daily within our communities.

    Great list of books and I’ll definitely be checking some of these out. I’m in the same headspace at the moment. Can’t escape into fiction at all so I’ve been reading nonfiction and that’s been going much better for me. ❤

    I just put the audiobook for On Tyranny on hold through libby and for once I was kind of happy to see that there are 28 people ahead of me at my local county library and 135 people in line for it through the Free Library of Philadelphia. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the ones you're able to get to!

    Thanks for this- it’s so easy to check out but so important to do the work and not just follow others. We all need to be critical thinkers rather than follow the algorithm.

    I'm adding so many of these to my list, thanks! Manufacturing Consent was kind of a slog, but feels like it could have been written today. I would recommend reading it in chunks.

    Thank you for sharing these books, friend! Trying to find well informed nonfiction picks can be very overwhelming! I’m trying to read at least one nonfiction book a month in 2025. I think that’s all my melted brain can handle considering recent events 🥴

    I have been trying to find anything that talks about what happened to the people who made it through the fall of an empire. Like, did they die? Were they simply absorbed into another empire? Were they enslaved in that new empire? Maybe On Tyranny talks about that some? Might have to check it out.

      I would highly recommend works by indigenous authors as that is the reality for many of them. You might also be interested in How To Stand Up To A Dictator by Maria Ressax which is about the erosion of democracy in the Philippines under Duterte. On the fictional side of things, you may find the Solarpunk subgenre to be similar to what you are looking for. These types of stories are about people learning to heal and survive in a post-apocolyptic world. They're utopian, but focusing on solutions, creative strategies, and cooperation in the face of some kind of disaster (usually caused by climate change).

    Currently reading "Facism: a Very short Introduction". My library has a bunch of these books on various topics and they seem like a great way to gain introductory knowledge on a lot of different things. Would recommend.

    Thanks for sharing! My reading plans include Tremors in the Blood: Murder Obsession, and the Birth of the Lie Detector by Amit Katwala (reading now), The New Jim Crow, Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia by Deleuze and Guattari, Alpha by Tiya Rayne, Just the Tipsy by Audrey Vaughn, What's our problem by Tim Urban (I'm not sure if I'll like it), The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion, The Devil you Know: Stories of Human Cruelty and Compassion, The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach us about Success, Mad in America: Bad Science, Bad Medicene, and Enduring Mistreatment of the Mentally Ill, and Escape from Freedom by Erich Fromm..... I used to work in retail but it's been a hot minute, but a quarter is four months? This list might be my 2025 list. I read nonfiction SO slowly.

    Heyo heyo! I hope you have a restful weekend! Love the TBR-sounds like a great and topical one! Another resource on learning about fascism are some of the essays by Umbert Eco (specifically *Ur-Fascism*), and I also have a couple books that, while they advocate for anarchism, are important to remember. (I'll get the titles and drop a reply for them.) I will say that Noam Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent" is a good starting place to understand how mass media is weaponized, Noam Chomsky went Pro-Russia after it invaded Ukraine, so... Be aware.

      I agree, Manufacturing Consent is still very good, avoiding anything he's said or written in recent years is unfortunately also a very good idea.

    • @CEMonaghanOfficial
      @CEMonaghanOfficial 2 дні тому

      The additional titles are: "Mutual Aid: a factor of evolution" by Peter Kropotkin (as in the godfather of modern political anarchism) and "Philosophy of Antifascism" by Devin Zane Shaw. (The second one is not an advocacy of anarchism, but let's just say there's a reason anarchists freely swim in antifascist movements.)

    • @CEMonaghanOfficial
      @CEMonaghanOfficial 2 дні тому

      That first title was specifically written to combat the Social Darwinist view, which is the foundation for both capitalistic thinking and also the precursor to the eugenics that is at the core of modern fascism.

    I just finished How Fascism Works by Jason Stanley yesterday! It is so easy to read and it gives multiple real examples when talking about different ways that fascism develops. He has another book called Erasing History: How Fascists Rewrite the Past to Control the Future that I’m interested in.

    Hi Jess! I’ve also been wanting to seek answers to attempt to understand these troubling times and what led to them from books. I’m going to try Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump by David Neiwert and The Anatomy of Fascism by Robert O. Paxton (maybe both of those would be up your alley!) The second one is a bit dense though so I’m planning to dip in and out of it. I’m planning on picking up How Fascism Works though! Thank you for the insightful video. I appreciate your content so much even though I don’t comment ❤ I love how real you are. It’s very refreshing.

    I commented on your previous video but wanted to hop back here since you're reading The Shock Doctrine. If you end up liking it, I really recommend Klein's newer book Doppelganger. It's mostly about the alt-right pipeline but is super accessible and part memoir with a lot of her sardonic humor mixed in.

    The cover for Imagination: A Manifesto was styled and photographed by the incomprable husband and wife duo CreativeSoul Photo. They're based out of Atlanta and have been on a mission uplifting Black youth by featuring them in fantastical and science-fiction themed photoshoots. Love their work. They have two coffee table books, calendars, and an official line of race-swapped Disney princess dolls. I wasn't aware of this book, thanks for all of the recs.

    I would recommend Let This Radicalize You by Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba. It isn't so much explanatory or history focused, but it is an empowering book about community organizing and the ways in which we can fight against fascism and similar forces. A number of my friends have already read it and it was highly recommended.

    I read Manufacturing Consent in the '90s, and thought it was very useful. I'm not sure it's up to date with social media, but I think it's really useful as a look at the nuts and bolts of how governments can shape public opinion.
    How to Stand up to a Dictator by Maria Ressa, about the fight for democracy in Indonesia is on my TBR. She's a very powerful speaker.
    For historical stuff, and this one is CHONK, The Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt is surprisingly readable. I was expecting mid-century political theory to be a slog, but it was very accessible. Might read it again.

    You reminded me that Kazen from Always Doing did a video about six books on fascism. Maybe you can find some more recommendations over there. i'd be very curious to reread the shock doctrine in 2025, i read it in 2014 and do remember it being very impactful on 20-year-old me. klein's most recent book doppelganger was also an interesting read, and is part memoir but also part discussion of the phenomenon of people who go from the political left straight into the far right.

    I read On Tyranny after Trump's first election and am due for a re-read. For some non-US nonfiction recs, the graphic novel Captial & Ideology, based on Thomas Piketty's work, is an accessible and in-depth history of capitalism since the French Revolution. I also just finished The Skin We're In by Desmond Cole, which explores anti-Black racism in Canada by focusing on the events of a single year, 2017.

    I finished Jesus and John Wayne a week ago. It was insightful to show how we got here and how/when politics and religion really got involved in certain religions.
    Another book I will recommend that is an easy read is True or False by Cindy L. Otis it is a book about spotting propaganda and fake news, while showing at the same time fake news that has lasted for hundreds of years now in some cases.
