FYI... The oil that's being caught in the catch can ISN'T blow-by! I repeat.. It's Not Blowby. It's oil vapor created from the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons and valve train spinning through engine oil. That oil vapor becomes pressurized inside the motor and is vented out through the pvc system and throttle body. A catch can prevents oil from gumming up the TB and intake valves...
Drag racers have used a track tested set up called vac-u-pan for about 40 years. It uses exhaust header scavenging to pull oil vapors out and with the added benefit of helping piston ring seal. www.moroso.com/sites/default/files/instructions/25900_inst.pdf www.yellowbullet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16961
Anoint426 Hemi everyone swears by this mod but it’s hard to believe that a ported injection pushrod engine would have this issue (this is def an issue for GDI engines) at least with current engine oil tech. Gas is a great cleaner by itself and in a ported injection would clean the intake valve naturally especially the modern Pennzoil ultra or plat both have taken this into account. I do not believe this mod is as necessary as it used to be with the synthetic engine oils improving in quality and standard that are designed not to cause gunk build up on intake valves.
@@bill392 In today's engines, the difference is that direct injection doesn't allow the gas to keep the intake valve clean as does port or throttle body injection . So in theory, over time, the catch can would make sense. For this reason, I installed one, as cheap insurance.
It would seem that there would be nothing wrong with that condensed oil going back into the oil pan, unless the vaporization process degrades the oil enough that it shouldn’t be mixed back in with what’s in the pan. But if there’s nothing wrong with oil in the catch can, it would seem like a good idea to just “put it back “, or more to my point, “let it back” into the oil pan. So when the engine is running and there’s vacuum to the intake,a valve at the bottom of the can stays close, kinda like an inverse PCV valve. But when the engine isn’t running, the valve could open and let that oil drain back into the oil pan, with a tapped fitting on the side of the pan. This obviously would require removing and plumbing the pan, it would totally be worth it, unless there is an easier way, like maybe the drain back holes from the valve train under each valve cover? Remember in the old days your PCV valve was plumbed into a valve cover, but from the back of the intake, sucking from the head into the intake . We want it to drain through the head, but only when the engine is off. Hmmmm. A valve cover is way easier to remove than the oil pan. Or maybe an adapter at the oil pressure sending unit? Hmmmmm
Dang man that catch can is doing it's job for sure. Think of what all that oil over time does to the intake system. If you get new cars often I guess it doesn't really matter much. Us OCD people need one. Thanks for posting.
Dealerships years ago i worked at a dodge dealership in the office part i once was walking past the oil change station and they didn't have the oil filter for that car so they used the old oil filter and replaced the oil. Nathan Bennett 👍👍 About 15yrs ago, I witnessed a tech in my Vette doing donuts 😡 out in the back parking lot of the dealership I took it to for an oil change!🤯 Needless to say not only did I decide then & there to do my own oil changes but _that_ oil change was free after some choice words with the management!🤬🤬
No one's going to care about your car as much as you do, so yeah, worth every penny to do it yourself, you know what oil/filter you're using, and you know if the oil-drain plug gasket has been replaced, not just torqued down further, etc. Not to mention, donuts, farting in your car (I'm serious on this one, caught too many valets doing this), etc. I use a Fumoto valve so mine is super easy to drain, and I know the oil weight is correct, etc. AND, AND, it's nice to take in oil every so often and get paid by the local big-chain auto parts stores. It's not much, but it's like, okay, that was worth my gas driving it in. Plus, it's an excuse to drink a beer on a Saturday.
The can that I bought for my Challenger SRT8 has a valve at the bottom, so it makes it ez to drain. BTW none of the manufacturers add them to their engines, not just Dodge. Oh and they are made of billet aluminum FYI
On my shaker with the hose that runs too the plug in the rear for the catch there seems to be residue around the entire hose? I’m replacing the catch can with another but it seems there’s problem. Not sure what’s happening.
