One of the purest Voices to ever exist. The Late and Iconic Karen Carpenter. This amazing Brother/Sister Duo , she was an amazing Drummer as well who by chance Started singing. This song has been used in many movies and tv shows.
Yeah, she has a nice smooth voice. None of the crazy vocal gymnastics of some of the modern day singers, which I mostly don't like. Yeah, great, you can do whistle tones! Are we calling all the dogs in the neighborhood, or trying to sing a sing? :-P
Great song but, not showing the truly haunting timbre of her voice. They are bro and sis.
Yes the Group consists of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter. Richard is with her in most of the photos.
All these soul singers today trying to manipulate their notes cant hold a candle to this voice.. top 5 greatest female voice...
This is only my opinion, but I believe Karen would have lived longer if she wasn't pressured to be out front. She wanted to drum and she was amazing, but the powers that be had different plans for her.
Karen's voice was like velvet. "Rainy Days and Mondays" is another great Carpenters song.
Her voice was like a warm hug that broke your heart.
Karen had the most beautiful voice. No one comes close to her voice of liquid gold. So clear, pure, and utterly effortless, but there is such sadness on the edges. Not only was she arguably one of the greatest vocalists of all time, she was a phenomenal drummer as well.
She tragically passed away in 1983 at the age of 32 from complications of anorexia. Her death came as such a shock to many. At the time she passed, eating disorders were largely unknown to the general public, so her death brought much needed awareness to this devastating disorder.
Check out 'Rainy Days and Mondays', 'Superstar', and 'We've Only Just Begun' to hear more of Karen's amazing vocals. RIP Karen.
That's exactly right. Her voice was so clear and pure, but you could feel the sadness. There are many people with great singing voices, but it's it's the ability to convey emotion that separates the truly great singers. All great art is honest. Artists have to reveal something true about themselves for us to connect with. Karen gave us her sadness.
Try Natalie Dawn from Pomplamoose , she is very similar but on 2021 , recommend Sleigh Ride as an Xmas starting point - enjoy
Oh, that's right. I had completely forgotten about her death. Wasn't there a movie made about that?
Superstar is my favorite tune by them
One of the top female voices of all time. Every time she sung this no matter where it was or how many people were there she always sang it exactly the same as what you just heard. I hope you guys do a few more of their songs.
Don’t forget Grammy for drumming!
John Lennon told her she was the greatest singer in the world! She was over the moon.
Is that True?! Can you IMAGINE that?! ( That wasnt a John Lennon joke...but it was made me chuckle.) Seriously thought, can you imagine JOHN LENNON telling you that?!
@@thejetshowlive Let's be honest.... of course John said that. Did you ever hear Yoko sing???? Or Linda McCartney???? C'mon, Karen's voice was perfect!
@@brianbirnbaum3278 Yoko sang?!
I always thought she was doing an impersonation of a drowning cat.
and, for the record, John was *right*
Karen’s voice was velvety
The late, great Karen Carpenter was also a world class drummer. An amazing talent.
I think she had the most beautiful, unforced voices I have ever heard. Just angelic.
No doubt about it...
The Carpenters ( Karen and Richard ) were siblings. She had such a beautiful voice, and so many hits ( Superstar, Rainy Days and Mondays, Yesterday Once More, We've Only Just Begun, etc ). She died at a very young age from complications due to Anorexia.
It probably feels like an "old" song, since it's a cover of an early 60s tune.
A Bacharach-David song originally recorded by Dionne Warwick in 1965 (She sang the demo for it in 1963). The new arrangement by Richard Carpenter really pushes its best features forward and, of course, Karen's beautiful voice.
@@John_Chu Actually, I think Richard Chamberlain's 1963 version was the original, but yeah, it had been covered a couple of times before the Carpenters.
@@kenrk You're right, Chamberlain was first to record it. Ironically, both Chamberlain's and Dionne's versions failed to make the charts, even though both were sung well. I really do think Richard's sympathetic arrangement really made it a hit (obviously Karen's vocal was the foundation).
@@John_Chu Do a youtube search for "British guitarist analyses how Carpenters ENGINEERED a worldwide hit!", gives a really good technical discussion on what Richard did to make it a hit. Very interesting analysis.
Top 5 female vocalist EVER...no purer voice...she's FLAWLESS
Who's 1-4?
@@michaelasay8587 Aretha needs to be there. Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie Andrews, Gladys Knight. It's all subjective and by your own taste.
Linda Ronstadt, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, and Marilyn McCoo would also be in my top 5 along with Karen Carpenter.
In pop music? 1.
Top 5 for sure If not the best, for her pure tone and pitch she was the best. How amazing still all these years later. We cried when she passed and I'm and old metal head.
Must play "Superstar" and "Goodbye to "Love" to experience the full range of her voice. Only voice that can melt this metal fan into a puddle. The melancholy in her voice consumes you.
Yep, 67 year old Hippie and long time metal head and she reduces me to tears all these years later.
.
Same , Back in the '70's I was in high school and was totally dedicated to the unholy trinity but always loved Karen Carpenter.
@@rdhudon7469Thanks for having the guts to admit it. Most "raunch and rollers" would sooner die than admit the Carpenters did incredible music! I know some of them! LOL
That gorgeous beautiful soothing voice, so distinct, so recognizable!! The Carpenters had many other hits in the 70’s. RIP Karen Carpenter.
This group were pioneers in multitracking vocals, and basically invented the "Power Ballad" when Richard Carpenter had their guitarist put in a fuzz guitar solo on "I'll say goodbye to Love".
Yes my long standing opinion has never changed since the song was released.
The Fuzz guitar part was overdone, consuming over 1/2 of the song & Karen not singing. A shorter guitar rif would've been perfect!
That was a great Carpenter/Bettis composition that surprised us all when it came out with that solo. Richard's brilliant idea and Tony Peluso's fabulous playing!
@@carolhesterberg7526 My absolute favorite Carpenters song.
The Carpenters 'We've Only Just Begun', the greatest soft rock song ever made.
Karen Carpenter had one of the best voices in music. Rainy Days and Mondays and We've Only Just Begun are other great ones to do.
@Brad and Lex- Karen Carpenter was one of the best to ever do it. Her voice was that of an angel and she also could play the drums. Sadly she passed away way to young from anorexia. She was only 32 when she died in 1983. The Carpenters comprised of Karen being the lead singer and her brother Richard playing the piano and writing the songs. Richard is still alive. Just some information on them. I hope that helps.
She passed so young. The battle she faced was hard - anorexia won. I battled it for years and finally won. Wished she could've also. Need to watch their video mr postman. You'll love it
Good for you Andrea!
@Chris Whitmer thank you. Wished Karen were still here.
The best female voice ever. Looks like I’m not the only one that feels that way. RIP Karen you are missed.
Saw the Carpenters in 1972 -Karen was one of the greatest singers of the 20th century and a fantastic drummer/singer .She broke the glass ceiling for female drummers .She died at the age of 32 from complications from Anorexia
Love The Carpenters. A total 70’s vibe like no other. So many lovely songs. Rest easy, Karen, you’ll never be forgotten. Another band like this is Bread, though their lead is male. There’s also England Dan and John Ford Coley. They were siblings.
Who cares if it is old. That is not relevant. Mozart’s music is old, but still good. This is good music!
No, England Dan and John Ford Coley weren't brothers, but England Dan (born Danny Wayland Seals) did have a famous musician brother - Jim Seals of Seals and Crofts.
I love Bread and particularly David's solo material. My first girlfriend used to think it was mushy nonsense. My wife loves it.
You won’t find a bad “Carpenters” song…Karen had a superb 3+ octave contralto voice and was a superb drummer as well…and her brother Richard was just brilliant at song selection and “arrangements”. They also sang their own backup vocals.
Try: “Yesterday Once More” and “We’ve Only Just Begun”
You've just gotten into one of the most beautiful rabbit holes ever ... Please try and listen to more of the Carpenters ... Just so pure and wonderful guys.
Voice of an angel. There has never been another voice as pure as hers.
R.I.P. Karen Carpenter - one of the best voices ever
One of the most amazing female alto vocalists in history. Her personal life is an unbelievably sad and tragic story
Karen Carpenter (singer) died form anorexia in 1983 at the age of 32. The Carpenters were huge in the 1970's and Karen was adored worldwide.
You were just introduced to the greatest female vocalist. 120 million albums sold. An incredible drummer. Please react to Superstar, you'll be blown away...
Karen has the best female voice of all-time, imho. Their "We've Only Just Begun" was 'THE' wedding song of the 70's. You'll also love their "Superstar", "Rainy Days and Mondays" and many more. She could've sung a school textbook and I would've loved it. Such a pure, soothing voice and perfect pitch. Her brother Richard played piano and did the musical arrangements. This song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
No she didn’t she was very good but there are a few woman that most certainly had richer voices in the late 60s and early 70s
@@johntremmel3949 did ya catch the ' imho' ?
@@surlechapeau no
Mine also😊
@@johntremmel3949 😊
This haunting voice was 19 years old, and was recorded in one take…🤐
Every time I hear Karen Carpenter sing I get chills. One of the most beautiful female voices ever. What's interesting is that she considered herself more of a drummer than a singer. We lost a great talent way too early in her life.
I get chills, too!! A sign of great music!
Greatest female vocalist I've ever heard.
The beloved Carpenters. Beautiful Karen and her amazing brother Richard. R.I.P. Karen xox
Thats a first ,no reaction or recognition to the beauty and perfection of Karens amazing voice
Absolutely a classic!
This song will forever hold a special place in my heart! My mother introduced me to The Carpenters when I was a baby and that fostered my love for the group. She sung this song to me every night as I was growing up when she tucked me into bed. Then the roles reversed as she and I were alone in her hospital room and I sang it to her minutes before her cancer finally took her away from us. I can't help but to cry when I hear it as Karen's beautiful voice and the lifetime of memories break my heart.
I'm very sorry for your loss. Such a moving story.
😢
Omg, you made me cry. That's a beautiful tribute to your mom and to the Carpenters 😢!
the carpenters, karen and richard, were the top U.S. hitmakers of the 1970s with 12 top 10 all time pop classics and many more songs in the top 40 and top 100.... this song "close to you" was their first hit and reached #1 on the charts in 1970... karen carpenter whose voice then and now is considered one of if not THEE greatest female pop voice of love and romance songs ever was only 20 years old at the time, her brother 23.... they did all of the background harmonies together by and themselves using a "dubbing technique"... those in this video were part of their LIVE band they used in concerts...
3 octave range, pitch and tone is always perfect; she was often called "one take Karen" cause that is all she ever needed to hit it spot on. Such an angelic voice. no one better.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Thanks for reacting to the Carpenters! Their music quiets the spirit, soothes the soul. I hope you will discover more of their songs. Thanks again!
The Carpenters did some of the most beautiful songs of all time
Karen is also the Drummer. Amazing to see her play and sing at the same time.
This was THE "Wedding Song" as the first dance, for many years afterwards. and later it was picked up for many a movie.
I wasn't always a fan of their songs or arrangments, but my God what a wonderful voice Karen had. I wish she could have loved herself as much as her fans loved her.
There will never be another voice as pure as Karen Carpenters!! RIP Karen💙🎶💙
I still miss Karen Carpenter. Her voice is gorgeous and soothing and takes you back to a simpler time.
What a lovely voice. Sad that Karen was taken from us too soon.
Too many Karens these days
Her voice is in top 10 of greatest female vocalists of all time.. pure god given vocal chords
One of the most beautiful comforting voices. She passed from an eating disorder.
Her voice is just beyond beautiful.
One of the most beautiful voices ever
Watch Superstar and We've only Just Begun. Karen had the most beautiful voice you'll ever hear.
Best female voice ever...no screaming or belting it out...smooth great voice!
The most beautiful female singing voice I’ve ever heard….Silky Velvety Silk ❤️🩹
Portland Oregon USA 🇺🇸
As a drummer in her teens in her brother's jazz band, she helped them win the Hollywood Bowl's Battle of the Bands. She drummed AND sang...incredibly difficult to do, especially with jazz rhythms! Rolling Stone mag voted her Best Drummer in 1975, I believe, and she beat out some stiff competition. And this was AFTER her brother pulled her out front to sing because people couldn't see her behind the drums. She considered herself a drummer first and a singer second.
It's old, but even you youngsters can't help but smile listening to her angelic voice!
Gorgeous song
The Carpenters were a hit powerhouse in their day. They created a soundtrack for an era.
If this voice doesn't touch you, you're a robot. Beautiful. You can see it on Lex's face. :)
Y'all need to hear Rainy Days and Mondays!! Really great.
Hi B&L., Ms. Karen has one of the most pure and smoothest voice of anyone.. A great singer we lost too early.. R.I.P. Ms. Karen.. ♠W.G/
Karen and her brother Richard were The Carpenters. They began playing professionally when she was 15 and he was 19, signing a record deal a few years later. They began producing hit record after hit record though the 1970s, until her death in '83.
Karen Carpenter was one of the first major celebrities to die from complications associated with anorexia. It was the first time most people had heard of the disease. Her death exposed one of the most tragic side effects of body image issues for young women -- one that has only been exacerbated over the past 50 years...
Karen Carpenter was a professional-level drummer.
Her voice melts my heart ❤
I’m a hard rock kinda guy but I CANNOT NOT LISTEN intently whenever The Carpenters are played. ❤️
With you Brett
We've Only Just Begun is their most beautiful song, IMO!
Their song "SUPER STAR" is THEE saddest, beautiful song ever!!!!!!!! She had a great voice and a lonely life despite their success. She died of anorexia. She was a sick drummer as well.
That's the song Superstar. I love both their version and the Luther Vandross version
@@willowb1527I understand Luther did the song in tribute to Karen after her death.
Karen had an amazing voice, one of the very best ever. Karen always has a sad sound to her voice, its just the tambre of her vocals.
Much more Carpenters! She had the no. 1 voice!!!
Rainy days and Mondays by the Carpenters a MUST here
The first of numerous #1 singles...Karen is a 20-year-old then, brother Richard 23...among the best duos of all-time, with Karen the GREATEST vocalist! For 50 years...I still have chills hearing Karen. Yes, it's old...but, it's TIMELESS! No other singer today like Karen. This quality of music, musicianship, writing...was the norm back in the 1970s. If this is indeed your first experience with the Carpenters...you are in for a treat!!! React to what has been recommended by others...you will be a life long fan like us!
First time? Karen had a voice like no other. Her brother was a great writer, musician, and arranger. Such talents. Burt Bachrach and Hal David wrote this gem.
RIP Karen. A angelic voice.
The tribute is to Karen Carpenter (one of the two siblings in the group), who died very young due to complications from an eating disorder. The song was not originally written or performed with that in mind.
This is not old, it is classic - one of the most beautiful pop songs ever recorded.
Karen and Richard were brother and sister, RIP Karen, great singer
She was an amazing drummer too!
To a lot of people, it's a tribute to her. She had the voice of an angel and died at 32.
IM a metal head but when you hear Karen sing you just got to say damn her voice is perfect.
Karen and Richard Carpenter were one of the greatest musical duos from the 70s to the 80s, brother and sister. She passed away far too young
What a voice. She passed away in her prime, and in a sad way.
She could sing! I could listen to her all day! 🌻
“We’ve only just begun” and “rainy days and Mondays”
You mentioned that it sounded like old music and it is, but it is also timeless and will bring smiles (like yours) to faces for decades to come. Really great music never dies. We still love Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin because nothing of that quality is being written today and it goes right to your heart when you hear it . If you smile, get chills, dreamily rock back and forth, and maybe cry......those are signs of fabulous music. Not hearing much like that in today's digitally-enhanced offerings. Very sad for young folks.
R.I.P Karen, beautiful voice..
To get a real feel for her voice, try "Superstar". Since it is Christmas time, you should listen to "Merry Christmas Darling", Richard co-wrote it. Side Note: Karen had perfect pitch and was known as "One take Karen".
Her passion was playing drums which she learned to spend more time with her brother.
Karen, the lead singer. Her brother was the main guy they showed. Their harmonies were fabulous!
The Carpenters are one of the bands that defined the sound of the 70s.
Thank god i still alive today listening this song.
The Carpenters were my first concert ever, August 1972, Merryweather Post Pavilion, it was great.
Karen Carpenter has one of the best voices of all vocalists.. Y'all should definitely check out their version of "The Christmas Song"...
Should check out the following Carpenter songs: Superstar, This Masquerade, Rainy Days and Mondays & Yesterday Once More
One of the best singing drummers people never put on a top 10 list!
Karen Carpenter had the voice of an Angel. Unfortunately she passed away in 1983, at the young age of 32. She had several eating disorders. Could ya'll pleased react to Ambrosia.
" How Much I Feel "
" You're The Only Woman "
" Biggest Part Of Me"
An incredible success story. Karen & Richard Carpenter were just starting out and the producer found this song for them to record. A big hit, followed by "We've Only Just Begun". Other hits were Superstar, Goodbye to Love, Rainy Days & Mondays, and Merry Christmas Darling. Such a sad story that such a beautiful voice left us way too soon. BTW, she started out as a drummer but was brought out front as a lead singer. Lex is right regarding music styles seemed to be mid 60s to mid 70s for the pop and rock, 76 started disco but new wave started around 1980.
she was a great drummer too
Beautiful voice. Superstar, We've only Just Begun are great as well.
Their song "We've Only Just Begun" was my Jr. High graduation song. It seemed cheesy at the time, but now every time I hear it it brings back such great memories!!
If you have ever wondered what an Angels voice would sound like, this is IT!! Karen Carpenter had the purest voice I have ever heard. R.I.P Karen!
Agree, one of the purest vocalists I've ever heard. They were such a talent.
This song has been around for so very long and yet I still adore it. When I had my first child in 96' I sang this to him and rocked him. To this day if I hear it I sing as loud as possible and annoyingly so. He gets so embarrassed. ❤️🤣
The Osmonds was also a family act. Another wholesome pair.
