    My first game of aos, which is my first miniature wargame, was between blight kings with a couple of heroes against some iron guts with a couple of heroes. Jus using the core rules, skipping scenarios to learn the basics, we both enjoyed it immensely. After that, my opponent wanted to take a giant monster he only had built, but never painted. I said let's look at his scroll, and I'll say what I want to have in response. We agreed on a glance what seemed somewhat equal in power and played. In the end, his dude had 2 wounds left, my lord of plagues had 1. He won by a single dice roll. That two beginners can get something that close and fun from just a guess and an agreement makes this game extremely intriguing to me. The rules are easy to follow, it's just an engine, but we decide what kinda game we want to play that day, balanced or otherwise, and we can just play what we want. The game lets us decide what we want to do, that's not lazy rules to me, that's freedom, creativity.

      +Marius Mikkelsen I come from a GW store where Age of Sigmar has absolutely exploded with popularity, and every day people come in, they see the demo set up for AoS and they try a demo game and it makes me so happy to see people who have no idea what it even is, come in and have a good time. More often than not, these folks end up buying a starter set, and i love seeing new people get into the hobby because it means more faces in the store. I simply CANNOT get enough age of sigmar, it's great to see that you and your friend are loving it and i wish you the best of luck!

    Thank you for the positive comments on AoS. I have played 40k for a few years now and completely ignored the fantasy side of the house. Some of the models were cool but it remained unappealing to even try out. However when the AoS starter box came out, I loved how well made the models were, the Stormcast Eternals looked really cool and enjoyed painting gold for their armor, When I turned to the rules I was amazed at how simple it was and taught it to my 9yo daughter who is now assembling a small Seraphon force because she loves dinosaurs. Aside from the simplicity, the price of admission is also spot on. I brought a box of Start Collecting Seraphon, ebayed a few things and she now has an army to take on my Stormcasts who came straight out of teh starter box with a few cheap additions. Compare this to trying to start her on a 40k army. AoS is a very good step on GW's part.

    Love the video! I've been preaching these points since AoS launched and I LOVE hearing others spreading the word on not only how the game is built, but the idea to try playing it first out of the box before getting pressured into a comp system that vastly changes it. Btw, I'd love to have you on my channel, do a hangout, and talk about the games we mutually play. AoS is dominant right now for me, and I'm organizing events, demo's, etc, in my region, so that might be the main topic, but I bet there are systems we both play or have looked at that we could include. Let me know if you are interested. Keep sending those positive messages. I really respect that about you.

    Recently started miniature painting with my 12 year old. We are looking for a game to start building and playing. I found a new store in another town and the guy recommended AoS. I had heard about Games Workshop and it didn't sound like something I wanted to get into. I started researching things and that brought me here. I just wanted to say I love your channel. Thanks to you, I made my first purchase yesterday. I bought a box of Warriors of Chaos just because I thought that they looked cool. I think that is what I am going to like about this game. I just recently purchased an Age of Sigmar army to begin moving into Warhammer. It was on clearance and the models spoke to me, so I figured for a $20 investment, it was a good way for me to start dipping my toe in. Boy, I wish I would have seen this video two years ago. I've always enjoyed watching people play Warhammer. As an adult, I find myself getting more and more into the fantasy stuff, and I started thinking about playing Warhammer myself. Then I heard about AOS and said "nope... they are changing things... don't wanna deal with that mess or drama." Now I find out that change was made to invite me in and make the process of starting my own army much less painful. Thank you for your thoughts on the subject. Now I need to start looking at models.

    "What are point systems?" - every historical gamer ever.
    Seriously though, AoS is a good excuse to build not just armies with cool models, but build armies from the fluff you like. I really like Tamurkhan Nurgle + Chaos Dwarves. Also from the fluff, Chaos Dwarves created Black Orcs as slaves. So I can now combine demons, Warriors, beastmen, skaven, chaos dwarves, and orcs & goblins for a super fluff driven army full of models I like building.

    It's good that I had a lot of old fantasy models that I bought for 40k conversions - but now they live in the Mortal Realms on round bases. And I will improve my Age of Sigmar collection by this way furher!

    I love building an army for age of sigmar because it promotes theme more than anything else. Sure I could have a unit of skeletons and demigryphs, but why would you when there is no theme? Well replace the demigryph riders with skeletons, have them hold the rider weapons, and make the unit of skeletons have some gryphon iconography. Paint them all the same scheme and suddenly you have an undead army from Hysh. You're following a theme, and that's what AoS army building is all about. I love that they are starting to separate all the old main factions into much smaller ones. Before you couldn't build a Clan Moulder only army, and now you can.

      starbomber It takes work to make anything worthwhile. Flipping this around, in this new format is there any reason whatsoever to take that elven lord on a horse instead of a dragon? If the only limiter in this game is the number of models it sounds like it's fallen to an equally degenerate meta where lots of other units become unusable because they're weak for t heir model count instead of weak for their point cost.

      Fair enough, from what I've been hearing, those couple of dragon mounted heroes are SUPER strong right now in AoS, perhaps even unkillable. I pray that the general's handbook can serve as an aide to help players balance that a bit.

    For me, I think AoS was a good move. Obviously people will or will not like it, but that would be depending on where one stood, at the time of the change. The previous format was not my cup of tea, either, with the blocks of units, and I couldn't help but think that the game would never have been designed like that, in this day and age - really pre-computer age. If things can be reduced in price, set-up and complexity, that should work for all (I hope) - at least over time.

      The best thing about AoS is that the rules are literally free. Browse units, look at what they can do, and find an army that works for you. Once you find one, the Start Collecting boxes are perfect for those looking to get in on the action, and are typically an insanely good value to boot!

    If you want a point system, they have a point system in the skirmish rules which you could use. Personally I think that it's more fun to build an army that you want to build and if you are playing someone who you know has a weaker army (possibly because they have only been playing for a short period of time) you can always remove a few units from your army before you play to level the playing field.

  • @EdGrzetich
    @EdGrzetich 9 років тому +1

    "Comp" is short for "compensation," in that a point cost is applied to units, models, etc. in an effort to compensate for perceived strengths or weaknesses of these units or models. This is to provide an deterrent or incentive to players when choosing units or models for their armies to attempt to effect the creation of armies perceived to be equal. Typically, units or models considered over-powered are assigned high point values to deter players from choosing too many of for an army, and units or models considered average or under-powered are assigned a lower point value to encourage players to choose to include more for an army. If you are familiar with bowling or golf, a "comp" system is like the handicap systems used in these sports but applied to the components of the game rather than its players.

    Great comments you made about AOS lacking a point system.
    What a lot of competitive Warhammer players don't know (or know but pretend they don't know) is that many historical wargames rules don't have point systems at all.
    All the battles are based on historical scenarios, and the scenario dictates what you take for models and what kind of terrain you place, etc. If you're playing a Civil War historical game, and you're recreating the first day of Gettysburg for instance, both sides would get the appropriate amount of Union and Confederate forces that coincide with what happened at Gettysburg on the first day. There's no point system, and it's not about balance! The Union is outnumbered on the first day and you just have to try and deal with it! That's the whole fun of recreating historical battles!
    That's the way Warhammer players should look at AOS. GW is publishing loads of scenarios that they include in the battletomes and the rulebooks. AOS is meant to be played by utilizing the synergies based on those scenarios, or on scenarios that you make up yourself.
    If you try to insert a point system into AOS, and you try to "balance" the rules, you are defeating the whole purpose of what AOS is supposed to be. It's as simple as that. AOS is not a kid's game, it's for adults to be sure. But it's about immersion, not Mathhammer.

      +Tabletop Minions In my community we always thought of it as "compensation"; tournaments would "compensate" for
      OP units (e.g. make them more expensive, restrict their unit size or give bonuses to people using less OP units), hence "comp rules". The comp rules never applied to how to build army lists, because those rules were in the rulebook. We probably all got it wrong though because we hardly spoke english.

    The control regarding the number of models is quite imperfect in my experience. I might have less models in a unit, but the small unit could still be far more potent. If my friend puts down a unit of 15 ungors and I throw down a unit of 10 black orcs, those black orcs would most likely (dice being fickle) wipe the floor with them, even without the bonus of setting sudden death for having substantially fewer models. Personally, I like to compare and agree on armies used before model placement.

    Uncle Atom, I have an issue that I was wondering if you could get around to do a video about it or at least give me some pointers. I live in Brazil and we are a country with no real wargaming tradition. Recently though xwing miniatures started to get really popular around here and people started to see that there is more to tabletop gaming then board games. I started to play Warmachines about a year ago and I've managed to get about 6 more players in my area (half of them from a city a couple of hours away) to start colecting and playing. We have only one gaming store here, but the tables they have are usually filled with TCG players. Also the tables are small for wargaming (about 2 x 2 feet) and if you put 2 of them together you get a height difference between the tables. My question is how can i go about to improve and grow the community around here?

    So finally stopped pouting and despite being a Oldhammer believer, decided to give AoS an honest chance.
    I picked up the Start Collecting Pestilens box and this combined with the Island of Blood Skaven makes for a pretty nice base for a Skaven army under either ruleset. I'm not going to be swayed to round bases though, but luckily I have a cheap supply of square ones.
    I doubt I'll get drawn in by the new Stormcasts or Fyreslayers (UGH! I do not like the Fyreslayers). And they will always be Dwarves and Elves and Orcs. But I must admit the fact you can buy any old box and start playing with them is a big plus for bringing in players and I like the "play what you like" concept. But I hate the "sudden death" rules.

    Comp is most often used as saying Competitive rules or Composite rules.
    The GW representative at my game store has said they would impose the Adepticon rules for league play.

    • @mc1csmo
      @mc1csmo 9 років тому +1

      +xerusateme111 GW is not itself endorsing any comp, but has said they welcome events that create their own for competitive play. GW has said quite clearly that they will not create a comp like system and are not looking to get back into the organized circuit. Perhaps that will change down the road, but for now, just play how you like ;) I would be careful with GW reps touting things as if they are authorities, especially anything to do with rules. They are sales & distribution guys, and have no line into the rules people. GW is also notoriously tight lipped about their business practices and intentions as far as models, games, and development, even in their own company!!! A GW rep has as much info as the standard consumer (sometimes less b/c of leaks that spread for those who seek them), and get things wrong historically as much as anyone (I've been at this over 30 years, and yeah, its amazing). I wish the company had more transparency, like some other game companies that are so much more open about these types of things, but that is GW. Love em or hate em, that's just how they do business. So, yeah, GW said nice things about Adepticon's method, but that's not an endorsement for official method of play. Rather its simply a pat on the back for helping promote play and support the game in general.

    An interesting note about AoS meta game and army building, if you want to make a powerful army then making a balanced army is actually how you do it. Rather than taking all monsters or something, you need a healthy mix of infantry, heroes, monsters, etc. There's no official rules that say stuff like you need 50% core or two infantry units or whatever, but power-plays do require a self-imposed balance like that. That said, the focus of the game really is still all about fun rather than competitiveness.That's just my usual defense against the nay-sayers who say "oh well I can just put down ten dragons and then I win."

    Eum.. I was thrilled to find this video, because its basicly impossible to find an "how to build an army" video. And then the point is that you just buy cool models? What if I buy goblins and my opponent has knights? Or any other unit in the game that beat goblins? This means I give sudden death to my opponent ever single game to even have a chance of winning - having a shot at winning is kinda important, even for casual play.

    • @tabletopminions
      @tabletopminions  8 років тому

      Then I guess you have to buy the most powerful models, whether you like them or not. If winning is the most important thing to you, then that's how you pick your army. However, if the hobby and the visual/lore enjoyment is more important (like it is to me) then you pick differently. Thanks for watching!

    I have never been a GW fan. In fact I have been against them because the rules seemed very rigid and very expansive. This was a shame as I love the models. They are a joy to paint. I am really liking these rules. I am actually thinking of making a Vampire/ Skeleton army. Thanks for all of your video's as I have found them VERY informative. I think you are talking me into the scene. One question, are you going to post gameplay video's or video's of game summaries?

      +charles carper I’ll be doing some battle reports someday soon. Gotta get more terrain painted. Thanks for watching!

    I'm really interested in this, but I'm also interested in 40k. Is there something like this that's leaning more towards the 40k side of GW?

    Good video, very interested in skaven, seraphon and flesh eater courts. Anyone know how good the hell pit abomination, carnesaur and the terrogiest Is? Skaven or flesh Eater courts.

    11:20 it doesn't work because that rule only takes into account the number of models. There is absolutely no point in taking bulls instead of ironguts or skaven slaves instead of stormvermin or dwarf warriors instead of longbeards.

      I have a house rule for when my AoS friends come to play, if you are bring horde-unit (skaven slaves, ungors, goblins) you can bring 1 extra for every 3, so bring 30 and you get 10 extra for 40, then if you bring a mob unit (gors, orcs, dwarf warriors) you get 1 extra for every 5, so bring 25 and you get 5 extra for 30.
      Hope this helps for your games :J

      +Lionel Scott-Harston A lot of smaller "weaker" units have bonuses for taking them in hordes, for example a unit of 30 Skeletons will pump out 90 attacks a turn with their bonuses for being in a horde compared to 30 Grave Guard which may have some extra rules, but will only be pumping out 30 attacks per unit.

      so I only need to kill 1 skeleton to make it 29 and get rid of his ability? 29 grave guard are better than 29 skeletons.

      Yes that is true. I was also wrong in that Grave Guard actually have 2 attacks a piece. Skeletons are only worth in 40 man blocks it seems. And also for summoning as they come as blocks of 10 to 20 as compared to Grave Guard who come in blocks of 5 to 10.

    because of you I bought the starter Soul Wars only to find out i still need one book per race to actually build an army... ofc I can play out of the box but how do I know what to buy next without the battle tombs? that kinda sucks a lil but I still don´t regret it

      Actually, you should be able to download all the war scrolls you need on the GW website, or use the excellent Age of Sigmar app for iOS or Android. The books aren’t needed, but they do have lots of good fluff and artwork in the ‘battle tomes’ as they’re called. Thanks for watching!
