I've watched so many mixing tutorials over the years. This is the first time I've EVER seen/heard anyone discuss EQ moves needing to correspond to the key of the song. Mind blown.
I love it that you look on full tracks mostly, i like the focus on the whole tone of a mix and the relations that evolve within the frequency spectrum, the super subtle changes when put together, have a noticeable impact. I love the understandable technical explanations too. Keep up.
Regarding eq matching songs, 100% agree on your point. However the strategy can best be used as a self diagnostic tool to help determine your eq biases. Example if you eq match your song to 5 other songs and they all have a significant amount of 500hz more than your mix, you might notice you have a bias against 500 hz mids, whether that is from the speakers you are using, the room acoustics, your internal brain preference, or because you are just used to cutting out boxy mids on everything. Use broader q settings than shown in the video to look for eq trends without singling out specific fundamental notes, then make appropriate changes with your normal eq.
What i do is that i try to do a manual EQ match to the references using ISOL8 plugin to monitor different parts of the spectrum. Is similar to your approach. If you do it with several references and touching up the channels that feel very different you end up with a general balance that make your track very close to your references.
Thank you so much for your videos! We are learning so much... Question : I LOVE the saturation of my Thermionic EarlyBird preamp ; can put a low pass filter the keep only the root note of the instrument I am working on then record the result through the EarlyBird and blend it back in the mix to get the same results that you showed with Saturn 2?
Oh my goodness, I've been so reluctant to purchase presswerk because of the price. I have used DIVA daily for 8+ years and the demo of this compressor is back in my tool kit for electronic music. I really think it might be time!
Hey Sage Audio 👋 I have a question, Should you always cut unwanted frequencies below the fundamental frequency. Because when you apply Saturation or Upwards Compression the frequencies below fundamental came back. I've always seen in your videos that you only apply lowcut at start of the chain and don't lowcut after even though the frequencies below the fundamental came back after some processing.
Izotope's Ozone Match EQ is actually amazing. It does "smoothing" unlike the kind of Match EQ function you've presented. Obviously trying to do any EQ moves with those drastic Q's on a whole will not work. But don't hate on EQ matching if you've never used a real EQ matcher. I've made many songs sound better than they ever could have sounded using Ozone's Match EQ. You should try it.
I/we have a Bluegrass album recorded; now tweaking the mixes: looking for recommendation/opinions on PLACEMENT of the array of typical 6-pieces: fiddle, guitars, mandolin, bass, Dobro, banjo... 'dialing them in', like looking at a clock face. :0/ Glad to have found this channel - new subscriber: Cheers! JUST BLUEGRASS - ALBUM
Hey, are you going to do a video about the new FabFilter Pro-Q 4? I'd love to hear your opinion/review! Looks very interesting with the new spectral dynamics feature 👀
The bands are all in parallel, so they work independently. The harmonics will go over the band's line, but won't be included in the other band's input. Sorry, I could probably explain this better with some graphics haha
mix version 10? im currently on mk20 because its in a horrible key it's a nightmare to synth bass and leads 😑 great video though, some interesting techniques here 😁
@youryella D# It wouldn't be a problem if it was normal music but for dance stuff D# and E are a nightmare, bass is either too high or too low and leads just don't seem to sit in the mix. This might be a me problem, but I have spoke to other producers about this and most agree
Klanghelm's SDRR is a great option and Waves Abbey Road Saturator is on sale for $30 right now. For M/S compression we recommend you check out Voxengo's MSED (it's free,) which allows you to decode a signal into m/s and then you can use any of your current stereo compressor plugins in m/s.
I love your videos but I really wish that the on off would be a little more discernible I understand on your final version 10 you're doing very slight changes but I've got headphones on my eyes are closed I can barely (barely) tell the on from the off
Sometimes the differences are subtle, although we will definitely look into this! Are you using mixing-specific headphones? It always helps to have open-back headphones that have been specifically calibrated/designed for critical listening and mixing applications.
it's important to remind people that even if your DAW is running at 32 or 64-bit float, a lot of plugins still will not appreciate being pushed beyond 0dbfs. Melda plugins come to mind immediately, they're amazing and work great but the instant you start overloading either input or output and it produces some nasty clipping, even in high bit depths!
Hello Sage Audio i have question. It is possible that you will delete your UA-cam channel in the future? If so, at least 1%, I download all your videos on a pendrive . I really need it to growth haha :D

Well, you’ve been quite unlucky
Jeez you’ve never heard to mix in key? That’s crazy!
This is not uncommon. Anyways very good

These are some of the best tips I’ve seen in a while
Yet another very usefull videos among SO many - always watching SAGE AUDIO
Appreciate your comment, thanks for taking the time to check out the video!

I love you man you've transformed my mixes drastically
Sage and DW for the best vocals on producer tube 👌
Great tip on the saturn trick
Presswerk is amazing compressor! Love it. Seems that it's so underrated BTW
Cool ideas. I love the saturation banding idea. Thanks for the inspiration!
the side image compression is a game changer wtf, just tried it and it sounds amazing.
Love your content! Instant watch

Looking forward to Pro-Q 4 videos. Great technique
This video just blew my mind
🔥 Another Great Video

Would you use the mid/side comp before or after a bus comp? Or leave the bus comp out entirely?

Definitely stay tuned for that one :)
Nice video, Are there any m/s compressors you can recommend other than Presswerk?
Will saturn induce harmonics over the cutoff point of the set band?
The bands are all in parallel, so they work independently. The harmonics will go over the band's line, but won't be included in the other band's input. Sorry, I could probably explain this better with some graphics haha
How do i get the plugin?
I want to check this band out
I only use eq matching when I’m doing an exact copy of parts or arrangements for that exact reason.
dope

Mix version 10? I'm at mix version 200 rignt now.
Do you know a free or not too expensive equivalent of Saturn? And same question for a M/S compressor.
Not a direct replacement but Melda’s MSaturatorMB is around $50 and goes for less sometimes
Spectre from waves audio was $50 for a bit on Black Friday but now back up to $100 😢

@@sageaudiowhich one you’ll get SDRR or abbey ?
@@sageaudio Thanks a lot! I like Klanghelm and Voxengo, I have purchased some of their plugins.
Do you do mix consultations 1on1 I feel like I just need someone can give me good feedback to my situation
