Thanks for the comments everyone. The old grill is cast iron and the charcoal is resting on a cast iron grate also. I smoke meats at around 250 degrees for about 2.5 hours. This smoker is still being used and still get's great tasting meat! Oh, I had the old gloves sitting there and didn't want to get my hands greasy..... :)
Thanks for making this video, it's still serving a purpose many years later! My old gas grill was shot, but I figured the body of it had more life. This confirmed my wild thought of making it into a charcoal/smoker.
Nine summers later and this vid is still useful! Converting my old gas bbq to a smoker now that we're replacing it with a new one. Great tips. Thanks!!
I bought a new propane grill but wanted to use this old cast iron propane grill as a smoker. SInce it is cast iron it can get hot but i use it for smoking around 200 to 275 degrees. I still have this grill and is great!
Scott Bacorn, i know its an old comment, but it has to be said that your statement about "Charcoal not getting that hot" is completely wrong. In terms of heat output: Lump Charcoal > Briquette Charcoal > Propane > Natural Gas Charcoal grills when setup properly will get much, MUCH hotter than any gas grill you will ever find. 1000 degrees is easy. .
Gas grills often get over 600 degrees. That is needed for the searing. Charcoal usually does not get that hot. He is using it as a smoker also, which is a low and slow type cooker. Usually around 200-275 is where you often smoke foods. Plus he said his was cast iron, which is what exhaust manifolds are made of, they sometimes get "red hot".
A lot of people get rid of their old gas grill when they can convert and use it as charcoal/wood grill. It's worth the time and effort to get that great 'smoked' flavor.
Anyone thinking of doing this, check craigs list.i see plenty of free to low cost charcoal grills. rather spend $20 on a used weber and junking a cheap $150 gas grill VS doing this. Though good thought if it is all you have to work with.

That cast iron old grill made the best smoked meats. I moved out of state and no longer have that grill. Thanks for the comments....
Glad I found this video I'm at the moment converting my old propane to a charcoal and wood BBQ

Thank you. I have a glass grill that I want to do this to instead of tossing it.

Good video. BTW your supposed to wear the gloves lol
My question is how safe is it to do so? Gas grills are only tested for a certain temperature and when you use charcoal it gets a lot hotter
Easiest conversion I ever seen, just a few pieces of aluminum foil.
